A Five Dollar Hodgepodge

1. What's the best $5 gift to give someone?

I'm eager to hear from you all because I want to give a gift to the ladies in my Bible study— Any other ideas would be great, preferably under $5. Thanks!

2. What's your favorite way to relax/unwind during the busy holiday season?

I will have two weeks off from BSF, which I am looking forward to. I will probably be able to spend more quality time with my husband. My commitment to BSF amounts to about 20 hours a week. That's 40 hours I can just relax and not have to prepare. However, knowing myself, I will still study.

3. How do you feel about gingerbread? Love it or no thanks? Are gingerbread houses a part of your holiday tradition? If you said yes, how does that look? Do you like ginger flavor in other kinds of dishes?

I enjoy gingerbread and gingersnaps. Gingerbread houses are adorable to look at but not to eat. They are too sweet for my savory tastes. We did those graham cracker houses when my boys were little.

My husband likes ginger on Salmon. I enjoy ginger tea, and ginger chicken is yummy.

4. December 5th is National Blue Jeans Day...will you be celebrating? Do you have a favorite brand? A favorite pair? Do you have a hard time parting with a favorite pair of jeans? Blue jeans-joggers-leggings-yoga pants...which one do you wear most often?

The real question is how does one “celebrate” blue Jean day and what exactly does that look like? Do all the women get together and wear their jeans? Is there a special food they all eat while wearing their jeans?  Where do they go to celebrate this day?

5. As we head into this holiday season, what's your biggest priority or goal for the end of the year?

I want to prepare my heart for this season and every season.  I want that to be my main focus.

  1. I wear jeans most every day and did not even know there was a particular day for it. Guess there is a day for everything nowadays. We sell lots of candles this time of year at our store. Folks always tell us they are either for themselves or gifts, but ours are more than $5. I honestly cannot think of anything in this economy now where you can get something for that price....but then again I dont shop much in the big box stores. I prefer small business. They need the money more than the Walmart family does. Janice

    1. I wear jeans pretty much everyday. A good candle does cost and that is a bit too much for 12 ladies!

  2. I'll be interested in peoples gift ideas.
For years I've had to come up with gifts for managers or nurses I worked with. This one for chai tea is one of my favorites. People always liked it and it's really easy to make; the harder put is making little tags, but you wouldn't have to do that.

    1. That sounds really good. I’d have to collect 12 jars. I think I will think of this for next year so I can start collecting the jars.

  3. Okay, you win for the best answer to #4 ... I'm sitting here giggling at the screen, all the while my little dog's doing her adorable head tilt (Whaaaat?).
Thanks for the mention of ginger on salmon and chicken; I may buy a tube and experiment.

  4. I like gingerbread cookies, but I don't like the tea. It is too spicy for me. Being comfortable is more important than style for me. I have some pull up jeggings I wear because they stay on and our comfortable. Enjoy your break from your study. I don't meet back up with my group until February. Enjoy the rest of you week!

  7. I think a gift card for coffee. Enjoy your time off. I'll have to try the ginger on my salmon. Like you answer for blue jean day. Enjoy the rest of your week.

  8. ha ha ha on the Riveting. thanks for the laugh out loud. I do love ginger snaps dunked in coffee. If the gift was for me I would want a five dollar bill or 5 ones. please no chai tea, no flavored coffee, can't drink hotchoclate so no to that. I would take my 5 to help pay for my bag of coffee that is now at 12.95....😁

  9. I think the only real way to celebrate is to wear blue jeans on the day : ) I wear them most days though, so not hard. I like to put together 'simmer pot' ingredients this time of year. I buy cute plastic holiday bags and fill with an orange, cinnamon stick, cloves, cranberries and sometimes rosemary. Tie it up with a tag and instructions to simmer with water for a yummy holiday aroma in the house.

  10. Great questions and great answers. I would most likely buy a bag of candy and plot a bow on it. Jeans....oh yes...I will be wearing jeans...comfy ones at that. Relaxing is definitely something I need to do more of..I know how much you enjoy your Bible Study, but I also know you are ready for a break and some husband time. Gingerbread? I don't really care for it...a little dab will do you. I enjoyed reading your answers...they are always good and interesting.

    1. I never really think about wearing jeans since I’ve worn them for as long as I remember. In high school the style was to wear the boys 501 button front jeans. I wore them out and they made awesome cut offs!

  13. Hello Debby,
You've got me thinking. I'm probably going to write a post about this!
    $5 or Less Gift Ideas:
    1. Constant Comment Tea with a thrifted cup or mug
    2. Homemade shortbread, sugar, or snickerdoodle cookies
    3. Decorate a composition book and include a nice pen
    4. Handwritten recipe cards
    5. Selection of stationery or cards from $ Tree
    6. Inexpensive gloves with buttons sewn on them
    7. Christmas ornament
    8. Banana, Nut, or Zucchini bread
    9. Loaf of Homemade bread
    10. Jar of homemade jam

    Time off:
I spend a lot of time knitting and sewing in December. When I'm knitting, I like to listen to Bible.com, a Christmas audiobook, or watch an old Christmas movie.

    Ginger:
I haven't had gingerbread since I was a child. I did make gingerbread cookies with my daughter a few years ago. They were delicious. I don't usually like ginger much. Sad, because I know it's very good for me.

    Blue Jeans Day:
I don't wear jeans often. I'm a mostly dresses and skirts girl. I suppose I'll plan to wear a pair tomorrow. It's been around twenty years since I bought a pair. However, a friend gave me a few pairs a few years ago. They are Catherine's brand. On jeans day at school, I usually wear a denim skirt. I find skirts more comfortable.

I'm focused on Jesus, husband, family, friends, and Kringling.

I've enjoyed this post and responding. Now I'm going to read the other comments. I've got more Christmas posts coming out this week. Come on by and say hi!

  14. I used to make homemade gifts and box them up for my side of the family. I do not anymore, we don't get together since Mom passed. Some years yes, but this year not even for Thanksgiving or Christmas (hence us skipping Thanksgiving). Okay, back to your question on $5 gift. One year I made homemade cinnamon-honey butter and put it in canning jars. It's simply butter, cinnamon and honey. It's delicous on toast, bagels, banana bread, pumpkin bread etc. Another year I made homemade granola and gifted it in pint jars. When I gifted items in canning jars, I cut round circles from old Christmas cards to top the jars with.

I love ginger. I freeze fresh ginger for cooking and baking, and I love gingersnaps.

As for a goal by the end of the year? To be able to put contacts in vs. wearing glasses. It's not gone well lol, but I'm still trying. Also, to get back into some jeans I was wearing before I broke my foot. I've been living in sweatpants with this cold weather here lately.

  15. After today, I won't need to go to campus until Spring term so that is my relaxation. I still have plenty of online work to do but that's a really nice regaining of my time. I hear ya.
