A Friday Wrap-Up
Let's see what's been happening around the house this past week.
Monday marked Veterans Day, and this year, was the first time I chose not to attend the ceremony. My husband, as always, participated allowing me those moments of solitude to focus on my studies. When he returned home, he brought with him two offers for complimentary sub sandwiches, each requiring a $3 donation that would contribute to the annual Christmas wreaths adorning the Veterans cemetery.
Today, after I finished my grocery shopping, we decided to redeem the coupons since it was the final day to use them. The place was bustling with veterans, both young and old and in-between! Their bond was heartwarming, a true testament to the camaraderie that exists among them. We have a close-knit community of Veterans here, and pretty much everyone knows each other due to the various Veteran organizations: VFW, CalVet, DAV, American Legion, AM-Vets, and more.
As it was my first visit to this place, I ordered their classic pastrami sub sandwich. It was a generous mound of tender, flavorful pastrami piled high on fresh toasted bread, melted cheese, tangy mustard, and crisp pickles. Each bite was delicious, a perfect combination of savory flavors. However, a couple of hours later, I began to feel uneasy. It seems that my love for pastrami has come back to haunt me, as I realized it no longer agrees with my stomach. After months of peace from IBS episodes, I now find myself adding one more thing to the growing list of foods I must avoid. 😬
I know the cure! I finally bought some mint chocolate chip ice cream for tonight! Yep, yep, that will help me!
We have a Baby Boy
Monday turned out to be quite an eventful day, especially for the ladies of my Bible study group. One of the women joyfully announced the arrival of her third son! He weighed a healthy 9 pounds and 10 ounces.
Christine, from my Bible Study, underwent a hysterectomy on Tuesday. Now that it’s behind her, she feels relieved and grateful. The pain she had been enduring for so long will now be relieved.
Brenda, who lives nearby and attends the church Bible study, was feeling overwhelmed after her husband underwent two complex back-to-back surgeries due to his substantial midsection. He was finally discharged from the hospital this past Tuesday, and in an effort to ease things, Brenda asked her sister to pick up dinner and his medications from Costco.
Later that evening, Brenda called me in a panic, realizing Costco was closing in 30 minutes and her husband's pain medications were critical. Although I usually dislike driving at night, I appreciated that my husband was already getting ready to help. Just as we were about to leave, Brenda called again to say her sister had arrived. I was feeling the urgency in her stress. I'm glad it worked out.
And last but not least -
My husband went to the VA to pick up his new hearing aids, which were specifically designed to help him manage his service-related tinnitus. He called me from the appointment, all excited as he shared that these hearing aids come equipped with Bluetooth technology. It means he can now talk to me directly through the devices without needing to hold his phone! It warmed my heart to hear how much this new feature delighted him. Great but can you hear?
So far, he has reported a significant improvement in his condition; he barely hears the tinnitus that has been a persistent annoyance for him over the past several decades. It's a relief for both of us to see him finding some peace from that constant ringing in his ears. Plus, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the VA not only covered the full cost of the hearing aids but also the batteries required for them. They’re really small and skin-toned, and I can’t see them in his ears.
Some maintenance issues came up unexpected - the kitchen faucet was loose and the garage door track was stuck so those were easy and quick fixes.
We had a good rain on Wednesday. The kind where you can hear the pitter-patter on the roof and it continued all day. Thursday it rained a little in the morning hours and then cleared off, to display snow on all three mountain ranges- the north (Mt. Shasta) the East (Mt Lassen) and...
the West
(Shasta Bally and the Trinity Alps)
And that my friends, means we are entering our beautiful rainy season, which is winter to us. It's getting off to a good start after years of a dry rainy season.
We're looking at the next couple of days of no rain, followed by a solid week of rain!
My trees are gonna LOVE IT!
Have a wonderful Friday evening.
Until next time,
Debby

Pil has tinnitus, can you tell me the name of this hearing aid? He had tried three, and none of them helped. It is great that your husband's is working and is Bluetooth! I was all set to go get the pastrami sandwich...till you mentioned the I.B.S. I had I.B.S.for over 40 years. So no pastrami sandwich for me either. But my mouth is watering! I may still try a different sub at this place, never had any of their sandwiches.
ReplyDeleteI answered you on your post.
DeleteYes he seems to be pleased so far which is good - I know when his dad had hearing aids, he hated them and wouldn’t wear them.
I think I will stick with turkey, ham or chicken sandwiches. I was sick for about 2 hours. The mint chocolate chip ice cream really helped! 😜
We also got rain that was so desperately needed here in northwest GA. Oh, how it brightened our moss which is our "lawn" in the forest where we live. I wish I had known about the Jersey Mike's promotion, but since we are also trying to watch where and how we eat, I can sure understand how eating something delicious won't agree with our digestive systems. I am a monthly donor to the Tunnel 2 Towers foundation. They do so much for the families of fallen first responders and their families as well as our veterans. Happy that your husband's hearing aids are truly helping, too! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteOh that sounds beautiful Martha. I love the forest!
DeleteYes I’m glad he’s not being bothered with that terrible tinnitus- he can still hear a little but it’s so much better. I can’t imagine living with that - you can’t enjoy music clearly or even enjoy quiet or the subtle sounds of nature, in the woods.
T2T is a wonderful organization! Thank God for people like you, Martha. You have a heart of gold!💛 God bless.
we need a solid week of rain, but we get none or a deluge all at one time. we will take either one right now. need that growing power that only rain can do.
ReplyDeletewe both have the same issues you do, bob can't hear, even with hearing aids, due to loud noise of being in a mechanic shop his entire life and IBS it the bain of my existence. I had it pretty much under control with my NO, yes, maybe list of foods and along came 2 hurricanes and I ate what we had not what I should and now am paying the price.. so happy your hubby has the Bluetooth hearing aids. my brother is a Vietnam vet and he gets his at the VA also, but he has not mentioned Bluetooth.
I had it under control until that pastrami! No more! That’s okay, I got it under control and will be more careful!
DeleteMy son also has tinnitus from working on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. They give them ear protection but it doesn’t protect completely. So he will start having issues the older he gets. He’s only 40 and it does get progressively worse.
My hearing is opposite. I can hear a pin drop from across the street! That can be annoying.
Wow! This was quite a busy and interesting and eventful post! Your Bible study ladies have a LOT going on...will anyone be able to come to the next Bible Study? New baby, hysterectomy, hubby major surgery, etc. Wow. That's a lot of stuff! Oh, I am happy for your hubby to have the new hearing aides. Sounds wonderful. I know my hubby and I both need to be evaluated for them and I think we probably need them, judging by the way we have to yell at each other to be heard. LOL. I know you loved hearing the rain on the roof and knowing that the rainy season is finally there! Hopefully no more fires!! I enjoyed your post from stem to stern. Have a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeletelol - yeah I’ll still have around twelve gals. Yeah I’d say if you’re both having to yell at each other, you might need hearing aids. LOL
DeleteThis morning went on a hike and at the ranger station where they display the fire danger and it said LOW! I almost took a picture of it. It’s been a long time seeing that! Thanks for visiting Pamela. It’s always a delight.
What a super week of blessings! I've never tried Jersey Mikes, but your sub sounds really tasty. (Sorry for the pastrami after effects!) Glad to hear your hubby got the new whizz-bang hearing aids. Tom's going on 4 years now, courtesy of our VA; and to a person, they've all been wonderful. I hope this is the case for y'all.
ReplyDeleteThe VA here is awesome, too. He’s not had the problems as others have had in other states. There was a bit of a slow down during the pandemic/lockdowns plus they were building a newer VA clinic here but it’s been up and running now for 2 years and he loves it!
DeleteI loved reading your blog. I am newly subscribed and already feel 'at home' here. I love Jersey Mike's. We finally got one here in Green Bay, WI. I love their Philly Cheese Steak-reminds me of my home state of PA, I guess. I have discovered there are several things I can no longer eat. Sadly, sugar and sweets still seem to agree with me....lol
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful, blessed weekend. Diana
Welcome Diana. Glad to have you on board! I hadn’t been there before nor did I know we had one. Nice little sandwich place and I like that they slice the meat fresh. Isn’t that the way it is about the sugar and sweets! I don’t have a stron sweet tooth but place a slice of New York style cheesecake within my vicinity, and I can hardly resist.
DeleteI hope my comment went through. I'm not sure it did.

ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had an eventful week, and I love the heartwarming image of the veterans coming together. It’s great that you were able to focus on your studies while your husband participated in the ceremony. Sorry to hear about your pastrami incident, though! Hopefully, the mint chocolate chip ice cream works its magic!
How is Saturday going? Read my new post. Thank you. https://www.melodyjacob.com/2024/11/holiday-glam-budget-christmas-outfit-ideas.html

Sounds like an eventful week you had. Mylee is good friends with our local Jersey Mike's, daughter. She and her friends get to eat their sandwiches all the time...of course, she only likes turkey and cheese. Tinnitus has become an issue for Sam as well. He too has the hearing aids with blue tooth and he usually that a good bit when talking to customers on the phone. I love this beautiful picture of the mountains Debby..You live in such a pretty area. We have rain coming on Sunday....Happy Weekend...Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI think I’ll have to stick with turkey from now on. I’m sorry that your husband also suffers from tinnitus. It can be miserable to live with. I hope it’s helping him. My husband seems pleased so far! God bless you Shug - thanks for visiting.
DeleteIt sounds like you have had a great week, very busy and blessed too.
ReplyDeleteWe love Jersey Mike's sandwiches and contributing to the Veteran's cause was a win/win for the day. We always do things like that too.
Gorgeous scenery with the snowy mountains. Hope that's a good sign for the future snow pack.
I'm thinking that the mint chocolate ice cream will be the "Cure All". I know it is for me!!! (:0)

So far so good with this new rainy season. Let the storm door open and stay open. This could be the 3rd rainy rainy season and all indications are looking good.
DeleteThe mint chocolate chip was a delicious cure all. 🍨
Oh yes, ice cream is just the thing. :)
ReplyDeleteLots of good things happening this week.
Well it did settle my stomach! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! 😉
DeleteGreat coupons. We had Jersey Mike's on Wednesday. That's nice that you have a close-knit community. Sweet little baby boy. Glad the hearing aids worked out.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that your hubby received hearing aides that work good for him., and that the VA paid for them. Conrats on the baby boy. He is a lil cutie! Janice
ReplyDeleteI have tried suggesting to Tim about hearing aids to help with his tinnitus but he is convinced they would not help. I hope to one day be able to afford new hearing aids, in a few years I hopefully will go on a pension and will be able to get them for free.
ReplyDeleteI recently tried Jersey Mike's, and the sandwiches were delicious. aahh, what a precious baby boy born to the world. So sorry to hear your husband has suffered with tinnitus all these years. I have also had it occasionally through the years, and it seems to come with the seasons and weather. I didn't realize it was going to rain there all this week. We are supposed to get rain here too. And lastly, that black and white checkered pumpkin is too cute. Love that.

ps.....Oh, and the black and white beads are so cute too. I have been seeing holiday ones at Dollar General, and I want to get some!
