The First Monday of the Year
The First Monday
of the New Year!
Marvelous Opportunities Await
Marveling at the morning sun,
Opening the week with fun.
New opportunities to seize,
Delighting in the gentle breeze.
Awake, arise, don’t delay,
Your destiny starts this Monday.
By Dan Higgins 2024
I hope you all are doing well and ready to seize the opportunities ahead!
- As I look at my week starting today - it’s back to BSF on Wednesday—I can’t wait! Those two weeks off felt longer than expected, and I really missed the routine.
- After Wednesday, I’ll be rejoining my church Bible discussion group on Isaiah, which I’ve been looking forward to. It will be great to get back into that groove and be with everyone.
- I also hope to start doing some of my home projects...
On Sunday, I noticed many people at church were giving away their oranges and lemons. The scent was absolutely delightful! It’s such a wonderful reminder of how God sustains us in the winter - bringing in some vitamin C just as we head into the cold and flu season. The aroma of those fruits makes me think of the approaching Spring. Oranges bring a ray of sunshine during the winter, and I’m excited to enjoy lemon in my water as well.
Oh, Susie...
She couldn't resist...a nibble.
Okay, I love the "look"
I might make another orange cardamom olive oil cake. I'll freeze half of it.
So, what's this little cupboard you have on your counter?
My middle son, whom I lovingly call Foodie, surprised me with a beautiful Mother's Day gift when he was just 18 and working at Mervyns. I've always dreamed of painting my cabinets in that same style, but I think it might be a bit too bold for my taste.
My kid knows what I like, and I have loved it from the first day he gave it to me. It gets dusty though and I use a Q-tip to get into all the tiny places -
During our move up here nearly 17 years ago, several little parts broke off - I initially believed I had retained the broken pieces to repair them, but in the chaos of the move I misplaced them.
This is the year, I plan to address this issue by eliminating the remaining pieces and developing an alternative solution that closely resembles the original.
I decided to take advantage of the $20 Kohl's Cash I earned through my recent purchases, knowing I had to use it up before the deadline of January 9. Excited to find something nice, I wandered through the store, exploring various sections in search of an item that I not only liked but also needed. I set a strict limit for myself, determined not to spend more than the $20 Kohls cash.
After browsing through racks of clothing, shelves of home goods, and displays of accessories, I found myself drawn to the handbag section. I can always use another purse, especially since I prefer smaller sizes. I came upon this compact purse that seemed ideal; it was just the right size, spacious enough to hold my phone, key fob, wallet, pepper spray, and some chap stick which is all I typically need.
This purchase had nothing to do with the unfortunate coffee spill. The new bag was reasonably priced at $12.50, and I thought to myself, "Why not?"
After making my purchase, I realized I still had $7.50 left to spend. However, I knew my options were quite limited at Kohl's with such a small amount. Perhaps I can find a kitchen towel or a small household item? Regardless, I was thrilled that I didn't have to pay out of pocket for anything today and It felt satisfying to score a new purse while sticking to my budget!
Then I went to Target to return something, and I spotted this attractive box of Kleenex with a decorative pattern that caught my attention. I like Target; except for the clothing and shoes. I like that they have a CVS pharmacy, which adds convenience and the Dollar Spot located at the entrance is fun to look through.
Too bad I couldn't have used my Kohl cash at Target!
I placed a few things around for that winter touch.
Next week, I plan to begin decorating for the Chinese New Year, which falls on January 29th this year. This celebration marks the start of the Year of the Snake in the lunar calendar.
Right now, the electricity to the lights in the dining room is out - my husband is replacing a wobbly switch. ✔One item is now crossed off from our list for this year's maintenance.
Currently, the temperature is 60 degrees with sunny conditions. The front door is open. The lawn remains soft and squishy due to the heavy rainfall experienced last week.
The bulbs are beginning to sprout, which is typical for this area.
At the rate they are growing, these mini daffodils might bloom next week with the warmer temperatures and sunshine.
Miracles in the Making
Miracles happen every day,
Open your heart, don’t sway.
Never lose faith or hope,
Dreams are like a kaleidoscope.
A miracle might be on its way,
You’ll find it, perhaps this Monday.

Sincerely,
Debby

What a wonderful gift your son gave you. The orange display is perfect and I so love the smell myself. So much so I added orange slices to my Christmas tree this year. Happy first Monday of the year! Janice
ReplyDeleteEvery time I dust it with a Q-tip, I think of him. I might do that next year. We have so many oranges this time of the year.
DeleteI noticed that little cupboard right away and was happy to scroll down and see where you got it. What a sweet gift!
ReplyDeleteI like your purse too and free is good!
Free is awesome!
DeleteThe little cabinet is just exquisite!!! Both adorable and beautiful! I have never seen anything like it! We go to Target a lot, but I have never seen these tissues. I will look for them next time we go!
ReplyDeleteThey are made from Bamboo - they are a bit rough on the nose though. I had to go out and buy 2 boxes of a softer tissue for my husband. I'll keep them because I like the way they look but for heavy duty use, they are rough.
DeleteI love the little cabinet. I don't remember our local Mervyns having anything as nice !
ReplyDeleteThis was back in the mid 90's.
DeleteFree is definitely good. I hope you can find something small to use the rest of your Kohl's cash on.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet gift from Foodie.
God bless.
I bought something - that's for another post!
Deletethat tiny china cabinet is beautiful and oh so cute. I like the tiny dishes and cups and the colors. most of all I love the hanging on the wall in the first photo. did you buy that or make it? its beautiful. good price on the purse and sad to lose the 7.50. maybe you could find something you need and just take the 7.50 off. I only shop Walmart and Amazon and have never been in a Kohl's, so have no idea what they have there. I don't like to receive gift cards unless they are visa, like cash. once my husband got a 50 dollar gift card to Best Buy and we could find nothing in there for him and I ended up using it to buy ink for my printer and a box of photo paper. he got nothing.
ReplyDeleteI bought that wall hanging through Temu a couple of years ago.
DeleteI don't care for Kohl like I used to. It's hard to find anything. My favorite store is still Macy's. I used to work there decades ago, and when I want to find something nice, I go to Macy's.
I agree - a $50 gift card from Best Buy? That's torture!
forgot to say Happy Monday, but then today is Tuesday so have a happy Tuesday. ha ha
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about that cute little cupboard. It is adorable and what a sweet gift. I need to go to the greenhouse and pull some of Sam's lemons and oranges from his trees. It smells wonderful in there....your bowl of lemons has inspired me to do this today. I know how excited you are to get back into your bible study. Nothing like starting a new year learning more about the word of God. I sure love the look of those little bulbs sprouting up. We have a couple more months and we should see some around here. Enjoy this wonderful Tuesday as I know you will.. thank you for this fun and uplifting post Debby.
ReplyDeleteThank You, Shug. Get out there and get those oranges and lemons and make something yummy!
DeleteWe really thrive on routine. Enjoy it.

Yes and more so, the older we get
DeleteI do love that miniature cabinet that your son gave you many years ago. And it does seem you got some extremely good deals, too. I'm a big fan of routine in my life, too, so I'm sure you're glad that things are returning to "normal." Have a great week, Debby!
ReplyDeleteNormal is good!
DeleteHi, I loved this post Debby.
ReplyDeleteI love the gift your son gave you for Mother's Day and how you plan to restore it a little. I too have a few items I need to dust with a Q-tip.
Here in Wisconsin... no fresh lemons or oranges... I do love looking at yours. :-)
Love, Carla
They are just about gone. I'm hoping they'll have some more when I go to my Thursday discussion group!
DeleteHappy Tuesday, Debby! I, too, am absolutely besotted by that little cabinet. I want to make an effort to buy and display some fresh lemons; not only are they my favorite color, but the aroma can't be beat.
ReplyDeleteSo many opportunities in store, aren't they? I'm holding both my hands wide open!
Opportunities are out there for the taking! I can feel it!
DeleteUmmm the scent of lemons and oranges.. so fresh ...
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that tiny cabinet your son gifted you. That's my kind of treasure. I may have a bit of envy rises.
I am missing bible study times. I don't know that I am going to get back into the group type of study at this time of our lives. We will have to see how the Lord directs.
Happy Monday on Tuesday !!
Sue
Maybe you could find a zoom bible study. Pray about it - perhaps you could host one at your house?
DeleteI like your involvement in your church. I need something like that. Your cabinet it so pretty. How does that tissue work? Do you like it? I've seen it at Target.
ReplyDeleteThe tissue is pretty—made from bamboo—but if you use it all the time (allergies, colds), it can be rough on the nose. I didn't realize it would be that rough feeling.
DeleteSometimes the hardest part of using Kohl's cash is finding something to buy within that amount :-)
ReplyDeleteYou got that right and of course they want you to use it to pay more.
DeleteI love your little cupboard that your son gave you. I have a little something that would look so nice on it. If you email me your address I'll send it to you!!!
ReplyDeleteHow nice of you.
DeleteI'll have to come to your blog and give you my email address because I do not have it and can't find it.
First, I love that last Monday poem. That is the cutest little cabinet your son bought you. The yellow colors pop out, it's darling. And those oranges look really good. There's nothing like the smell and sight of oranges in the kitchen. Oh, I love that dollar section at Target too. First thing I do is browse through there. Your snowflake centerpiece is charming and just right for the winter days. I love white in January.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a sunny day. We are having a few sunny days also. I hope the daffodils bloom early for you. Have a good week, Debby.
~Sheri
I have good restraint, but let me tell you, it's hard at Target's dollar section. For January, I like white and blue. Seems like a good January color. But with Chinese New Year coming, I will have at least one display -
