A WORDY Hodgepodge
1. At the end of every year (or at least since the mid-1970's) Lake Superior State University posts a list of words they think should be banished from the Queen's English for misuse, overuse, and/or general uselessness. You can read more about the decision making process here, but this year's list includes-
Which of these words/phrases do you use regularly or even just every now and then?
How many did you have to look up?
Zero.
Which of these words would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why?
None
Is there a phrase not on the list you'd like to add? If so do share, then tell us why.
Leaning in - and 110%
but don't worry - I wouldn't support a ban on it even if it does irritate me every time I hear it.
2. Your favorite soup? Do you make this one yourself or is it from a can?
I’m a soup person, and don't care for canned soup. I do like the red pepper tomato soup in a box. And when I am sick, I like Lipton chicken noodle soup.
The easiest soup I make and my favorite is potato soup. I can always adapt it—throw in caramelized onions, add some corn for a chowder, or throw in some broccoli. Sometimes, I add a lot of garlic, and other times, I top it with crispy bacon and minced green onions. Leftover ham is good, too, topped with melted cheddar cheese. Such a versatile, easy soup to play with.
3. How do you feel about winter?
As a Californian, I don’t have an issue with winter. It’s when we get our annual rain and snow in the mountains, and we know that means WATER. I never hear people complaining about the winter here. Sure, we all love the dry months, but in the last few years, we've had such devastating fires, smoke and horrific heat that winter is like a reprieve from all of that.! Appreciate winter while it's here - because the Hot weather will be here soon enough.
What's one winter activity you look forward to?
In my younger days, going to Tahoe to ski or sledding. My folks owned a duplex and we went up every other weekend and on spring vacation. Although I didn’t always enjoy it because it took me away from my friends. And I always got car sick. 🤢
Now, I'm taking the dog to play in the snow. Depending on the snow level, it's usually under an hour to drive there.
4. The Pantone color of the year for 2025 is mocha mousse (sample pictured here). What say you? The website describes it as 'a warming, brown hue imbued with richness. It nourishes us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort'. Is this a color I might find in your home or wardrobe? Is it one you might add in some big or small way in the year ahead?
Ohhh, I like! Similar to these boxes of tissue? I’ve always liked this color. I prefer a neutral home with seasonal pops of color. With the exception of the kitchen where I like a lot of color!
In a similar, but not really vein...if I were to offer you a choice right now of either a cup of mocha or a cup of mousse which would you say yes to?
Right now, I'm sick of anything remotely sweet. I do enjoy both, but it looks like I’ll need to take a rain check!
5. Which of the following winter related idioms can best be applied to your life in some way right now? Choose one, then tell us why you chose it. snowed under, on thin ice, tip of the iceberg, chill out, break the ice, snowball effect, not a snowball's chance in hell, get cold feet, the cold shoulder
The cold feet and the cold shoulder
Cold feet—When I feel the tug to share the love of Christ with a stranger. I often hesitate. It’s a struggle I'm not proud of. My heart truly cares for those who are lost, and we must remember that simply donating to a ministry to do the evangelism is not enough. We must always be ready for the opportunity to share. It might be the only time for that person.
Then...
After I finally muster the courage to connect, I sometimes encounter a cold shoulder the next time we meet. I shouldn’t allow that to hurt my feelings because It's not about me. But it does make me sad.
I then reflect on how many who opposed Jesus - may have turned away when facing Him again. He and his disciples endured great suffering and many cold-shoulders in order to share the good news; my moments of hesitation and rejection pale in comparison to His sacrifice and those of His followers.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
The supernatural is the natural -
Expect God!
Another Hodgepodge is in the history books. Until next week...
Debby

Winter here can be dark and dreary, but I did look forward to taking the dogs outside just to get fresh air. I love a winter trip to a cabin too. Funny about that coffee color. I am just starting a new lap afghan with those colors. I hope to share a post soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that will be a nice afghan - when we painted our living room, at first it looked like the walls were brown - more taupe but it was a huge change. I like it now in fact I don't even notice that it is darker. You get used to it - I have excellent natural lighting in my living room, and white walls are too bright. Even with the taupe color, it is still a bright and cheery room.
DeleteHi Debby,
ReplyDeleteI laughed at your answer to number one, you are so fun!!
I have a friend in California who is happy for any rain/snow/water for the same reasons as you.
I also enjoyed your random.
Thank you for sharing Debby!
Carla
Little did I know when I pre-wrote this post that fires in Southern California would break out. It's hard for me to watch - it brings up anxiety and dread
DeleteSuch a great testimony from this lady who had the brain surgery...God is so good. I am enjoying the Winter Cold right now...of course, we have only had it the past few days. The colors of the year are very rich and inspiring...I can see decorating with these colors, however, I am satisfied with what I have. On the topic of soups...I prefer to make my own..too much sodium in the canned soups. I saw the news on the big fires in southern California this morning....Praying for these people and for the state of CA. Have a Blessed day Debby...enjoy your beautiful sunshine.
ReplyDeleteI heard about the fires yesterday. Horrible. I get a little PTSD when I watch the news. Unsettling. We had some big gusty winds yesterday and we don’t call them Santa Ana’s here but I instantly thought of the possibility of fire up and down the state. The pyromaniacs love wind events.
DeleteI knew all those words except skibidi. Another blogger looked it up and provided a link and I thought it was disgusting - a head in a toilet. Guess I'm good staying out of the loop sometimes!
ReplyDeleteWonderful news on your friend Rene'. God is good.
I still can't get over Rene. She came this morning and looked great!
DeleteI prefer to just stay out of the loop if they're going to use words like that.
life has been a year of snow under on thin ice... I only use 100 % and will continue to. I used to be up on current words, when working. I was 20 years plus older than my coworkers, or more than 20 and they had children. I absorbed from hearing them talk. since retirement I only see words on blogs once in a while. I do hear some of the crazy words on TV shows.
ReplyDeleteI usually know what the colors are for each year because suddenly all the talking heads on bob's news cast that blast all day are all wearing the same colors. Just came from a blog that said brown is in now, and all shades and I had already told Bob a few weeks ago, brown is going to be the new color. he said how do you know. the answer was, look at how many women are wearing shades of brown on TV.. since I wear almost all black, I am waiting for the year of Black to be the word.
I knew all the slang words when I had my boys but tried not to use them. Someone has to be the Mama.
DeleteI like black too. Right now, I have a lot of grey and black mixed with earth tones and pops of color here and there. It sounds mixed up, but I like it.
Gosh, Debby ... I appreciate how you fleshed out these responses so thoughtfully. (I wasn't particularly wow-d by the questions and elected to sit out this week.) Because I've a baggie-full of caramelized onions needing used, I'm going to make that potato soup this afternoon. Winter may be my favorite season, but this week's trying my senses ... brrrrrr!
ReplyDeleteFunny, I wasn't either at first. I'm glad it came out on Sunday because I had a couple of days to think about it. I wouldn't look up that one word. I had a feeling, and I just wasn't interested.
DeletePotato soup is always a pleaser.
I certainly do love having soup or chili in the winter, Debby. And those colors are divine together. We do serve a mighty God and I'm so happy that your friend recovered so well and so soon. His hands were certainly upon her. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteI love chili too and stew! It was so nice to see her smiling face!
DeleteYou're the second person to mention potato soup today and now I'm feeling the urge to make some. What a wonderful testimony your friend has! Have a nice day!
ReplyDeleteI think we're having soup tomorrow just because...
DeleteAhh Debby, I loved your thoughts in your answer to #5 and your random was a real encouragement, too. I love soup! Happy Winter and happy hodgepodge to you.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ellen. I love soup. I think it's on the menu for tomorrow!
DeleteI can never understand why they want to get rid of some words. Many of those words, while not used often by myself, are occasionally to be heard coming out of my mouth.
ReplyDeleteWinter's here can be long and very cold. I can take the snow if the temperature is not frigid, but man at -40C I am not heading out for a walk.
God bless.
Jackie, I don't blame you; I don't own any winter clothes that can withstand such frigid weather.
DeleteLoved your random thought!!
ReplyDeleteI actually like snow and winter. I don't like that I can't walk outside every single day though.
That's rough - get some snow shoes!
DeleteIt makes no sense to me at all to get rid of cringe and dropped. There are no other words that can replace them. So what do you say when you actually drop something? And cringe is so descriptive! That's funny, I only like Lipton chicken noodle when I'm sick, as well!
ReplyDeleteI'm picky when I am sick. It has to be Lipton - not a store brand.
DeleteSo wonderful about your friend Rene'. Yes, we do have an amazing supernatural God who can do anything and everything! We so underestimate Him. Our cousin had to evacuate from the fires last night in Pasadena. She called us this morning sounding rather panicky and asked for us to pray. We prayed and contacted everyone we could to pray. This afternoon she texted that they got their miracle and that their house was spared. They hope to go back home tomorrow if the way is clear. So we rejoice with them. I enjoyed your answers. I'm not a huge fan of that color, however. I like more color than that, but I do like a neutral base to add color to. I like your idea of potato soup that can be a base for other things to be added. I've done that too. Great idea! I made chili tonight because it is so chilly here! Will be 32 again tomorrow morning. brrr. Have a blessed night.
ReplyDeleteWell, I feel left out! You all are having snow.
DeleteGreat news about your cousin's house being sparred. I had to call down on some friends. So far, so good. It's a terrible sight to watch and brings back bad memories. Prayers definitely!
Am praying for everyone in California with the latest fire. So devastating and sad. We here in Michigan do have somewhat controlled burns each year. now. Back in the 1800's Michigan had two deadly wildfires. I think we learned our lesson from those....I hope so anyway. I hate that they ban words each year. Say what you want to say. I dont care...this phrase will also probably be banned. LOL Janice
ReplyDeleteWe have controlled burns here in Northern California and especially my region. Every few weeks we have a burn - especially if rain is coming within a few days. Now the national parks near by, don’t and they are a mess with down trees but that’s a federal issue.
DeleteI enjoyed reading your answers so much- agree wit you on question one and really like how you answered the prompt about winter idioms. I think it's normal to hesitate to talk to a stranger about a topic like Christianity. The hesitancy doesn't speak to your lack of faith but rather to how everyone is conditioned or hardwired to not want to face rejection or disagreeing words from others. Your desire to want to talk to others is encouraging to me and I pray that I feel those nudges more often.
ReplyDeleteI’m praying about taking a bus - which I never take and just see what happens.
DeleteI really liked your answer to No. 5. When we feel drawn to talk to someone about our Christianity we should be assured that God has also prepared that person to receiving what we have to say. If they then ignore it, it is their choice to do so; and they are in effect ignoring God; not you.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Yes! I have to keep reminding myself that.
DeleteI sure admire you for answering the whole Wednesday hodgepodge. I, like Myra, chose to ignore it this week. The questions did nothing for me.
ReplyDeleteCrazy that the "Word Czars" can ban the usage of some words..I think I will use them if they feel just right except for the "ugly" ones.
I am having a hard time watching the news with so many of my friends living down south. It is so terrifying.
Ummm soup...makes me hungry just reading all about potato soup. Its a favorite of mine and brings back memories of my childhood.
God definitely is The Miracle Worker. What answers to prayer!!
Sue
It’s fueled my anxiety that I have with wildfires. Most things don’t bother me but these fires and living where I do, I can’t help but think, when will our home be next. The suffering, the smell of the smoke, the sights of the fires takes me back to 2018. I pray for all of them down there. It’s so hard.
DeleteYou did a great list on the words. Your soup sounds yummy. We could definitely use some rain. The last two Winters we had rain which was wonderful. This year it's the Santa Ana winds again. I like the tissue boxes. Thank you for sharing your random thought.
ReplyDelete"Leaning in" is also a phrase that I really don't like!
ReplyDeleteThat phrase sends me through the roof. I don’t know why!
DeleteFinally catching up on comments from last week. Yikes. I enjoyed your answers. A lot of people said potato soup.
