They’re Baack

This week, herds of goats will act as nature's lawn mowers across various sections of the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, not far from where we live.  These charming caprines will be securely fenced in, with a trained working dog vigilantly overseeing and safeguarding their activities. As they graze on the lush vegetation, the goats will help maintain the landscape and bring a unique, pastoral ambiance to the area.

Why the goats, you ask?

Because they are adorable! Come on, LOOK at that face!

Local goats effectively manage vegetation, including stubborn weeds that disrupt natural balance. By grazing, they help trim overgrowth and protect the ecosystem, reducing wildfire risks and promoting healthier landscapes.

I'd only need one of two

I'm curious whether they offer rental goats to local homeowners. I would be completely on board with the idea! Anything that can help eliminate the Vinca problem on my hill sounds great. Every year at this time, I fantasize about having a goat or two,  grace my hillside. However, I am fully aware that they would eagerly devour every sprout and flower in their path, uprooting greenery with relentless enthusiasm.

I need a special breed of Vinca-eating Goats!

We might take a drive up there this afternoon.

I'm meeting my daughter-in-law for lunch downtown at a place we haven't gone to before.

Tomorrow is BSF—things are winding down. Next week is the last lesson, and May 7 is our sharing day, which is only an hour, but just a few actually show up. I will be helping out in the Children's ministry next week.

I can definitely feel summer is on its way! Even if the forecast says we might get some rain on Thursday, I’m excited about it. We’ll finally get to see our new downspouts in action! I know, I know, we could use a bit more excitement in our lives!

Until next time...

Debby

  1. We have had groups of these goats here and there. There are special white dogs that look after them. Did you know that goats have rectangular pupils? And BABY goats, don't get me started!!! TOO cute!

  2. I love the goats! They do that around here on some county properties. They are cute and work cheap!
Enjoy the last few weeks of BSF, and then the break!

  4. Hi Debby....I have heard of this in other locations and it's really a good idea. I would love to have a few myself but not sure how I would communicate with them not to eat my trees, shrubs and flowers. Goats eat everything. They are so cute though. Too bad that there can't be a herd of goats eat the underbrush on the mountains where the fires start. I'm afraid something might eat the goats though. Have a lovely afternoon

    1. That’s where they use them - in the mountains, green belts and Whiskeytown Recreation Area is where our last city fire started - the Carr fire. They are used as part of our fire protection programs.

  5. Maybe I should get a couple of goats.
I had a couple of goats follow me around the farm loop on one of my walks some years ago. :)

    1. How cute! If I had a big enough country property, I’d have goats. They are quite comedic.

  6. I love the goats. We have them all over our area too. They "mowed" everything down about a month ago.
We could sure use them in our backyard.
It's 82F right now feels so nice.

  7. There are a few hilly areas here that they use those cute goats to mow the grass. Baby goats are the sweetest things ever.

    God bless.

  8. I just heard that goats will eradicate the invasive phragmites that we have growing here. I wish I could have a few myself to do the job. Janice

  9. We raised dairy goats for about 5 years and yes they can "mow" down an area very quickly. In fact, when we had baby goats one year, a guy and his kids had a business that did just that, and came and bought a few of our baby goats. A very eco friendly business for sure. Goats will eat poison ivy too.

  11. They're adorable! Every now and then I have to get my "goat fix" at a nearby recreational area (https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/nature/alabama/goats-jackson-lake-island-al), but I wouldn't be opposed to adopting one or two.
Enjoy your lunch, and please tell us all about it!

  12. That is cool about the goats. I hope you enjoy seeing them. Enjoy your lunch at the place you haven't tried before with your daughter in law. Enjoy your time with the Children's Ministry. Take care.

  15. My cousins had goats on their farm, so I got to see them often. I helped milk them sometimes. But they're not my favorite farm animal (like horses). We'd set them out to the field to eat, then bring them in later in the day. Didn't use a dog, but the house dog followed along with us. I think it's a great idea that places like WNRA are using them to help in vegetation control. Have a great day, Debby!
