Bird on the Rock
Do you ever find yourself immersed in the tranquil embrace of nature - so captivated that you become singularly focused on one exquisite detail?
That’s precisely what happened during a recent picnic my husband and I enjoyed along the banks of the upper Sacramento River. As we listened to the sounds of the river water flowing over the smooth stones, we saw a little bird sitting on a rock in the middle of the river, surrounded by rushing water. The image of him mesmerized us and held our complete attention for close to thirty minutes as we watched in awe.
He’s been here before, effortlessly navigating the glossy, slick surface of the wet rock like a seasoned pro.
Now he finds himself deeper in the river, navigating the wet rock with a fearless grace. The cool water splashes around him as he moves confidently, blending seamlessly with the rhythmic sound of flowing currents, undeterred by the slippery terrain beneath his feet.
He knows and trusts His Creator and does not fear.

Eventually, he stumbled upon yet another rock, this one precariously perched in an even more treacherous location. I decided I couldn't bear to witness his next move any longer.
Why are we, as humans, often enveloped in fear?
I've often heard it remarked, "Well, that is simply the way we are."
That's complacency.
Does anyone want out of the bondage of fear?
While it's true that fear is a natural human response, we don't have to accept it as a permanent state. It's not what God wants for us. Instead, we can embrace the transformative power of God's truth, which can help us overcome fear. The Bible offers us a path to move beyond fear by trusting in His promises. Believe it.
Now, I can’t picture myself perched on a slick rock amidst the unpredictable rapids of the Sacramento River, yet when I observed that little bird poised calmly unafraid and filled with trust in its Creator, it inspired me. If that tiny creature can sit there, embracing the chaos around it, then surely I too can find the strength to stand firm on any rocky terrain with the same unwavering confidence.
Plus, you never know who is watching you.
Thank you, God, for the valuable lesson that little bird on the rock shared with me that day. As I move forward into the unknown of life, I will encounter stormy seas - I pray I will find comfort in knowing that Your peace will embrace my heart and mind. I choose to trust in you wholeheartedly.

A good lesson from you...a little bird told me! This could be a Dipper. They wait on rocks in the river and dive down to get food. But the profile doesn't look quite right.
ReplyDeleteYes it is. I read where the Sacramento River and its associated creeks and tributaries provide suitable habitat for American Dippers, especially in areas with rocky bottoms and fast-moving water.
DeleteWhat a wonderful message that little bird brought to you. Yes, I do get focused on one subject that I see in nature sometimes - the woodpecker with the red head who pecks at my tree, the Robin with it orange belly, the doves who come to visit me on my lawn, the California Quail whose family trails behind him in a single row, and especially those deer who have been coming around quite often this summer. Oh, nature is so good to us, and often brings us a message. Lovely post, Debby, and very nice pictures.

Thanks Sheri. I fell in love with that little bird. 🐦
DeleteIt is so surprising where God will teach you a lesson. Nature does this.
ReplyDeleteMy dad taught me how to listen to nature. Creation has a lot to say!
DeleteWhat an enchanting place to sit and watch.
ReplyDeleteAnd not many people around
DeleteJust another example of how God can speak to us through His creation, and this little bird spoke volumes! Blessings, Debby!
ReplyDeleteYes, he was a cutie
DeleteOh Debby. That was a lovely post. The little bird is a brave fellow, for sure. He taught us a valuable lesson-----to always trust in the Lord. Nice post, Debby. Have a super rest of the week. Susan
ReplyDeleteThanks Susan
DeleteAnother beautiful lesson about fear and trust. You have a gift Debby. Thank you for sharing your observations with us.
ReplyDeleteAs I look out my "office" window this morning I see the gentle breeze ruffling the leaves of the trees and am watching our resident squirrel bounding up and down that same tree. Its a good morning after a decent night's sleep.
Sue
Oh, I enjoy watching the antics of squirrels. We don't have any in my neighborhood. Too many dogs maybe?
DeleteI loved hearing the water rushing by you in that river...and I can understand why the bird would captivate you! The one thought I had was that he can be so brave because, yes, He knows his Creator, and also, he knows that his Creator designed him to be able to fly away when the waves get too rough around him! God is our Refuge and help in times of trouble. We should know that we can fly to Him and He will give us rest and comfort. This was beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved the sound of rushing water.
DeleteA beautiful place to sit and wonder at the works of God.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely!
DeleteI enjoyed the message in this post Debby...Fear sure has a way of trapping us...If only we could trust the way this little bird trust?
ReplyDeleteIt should be something we strive for.
DeleteThis is a wonderful post. The lessons to be learned from birds are both humbling and a comfort. Thank you for this.
ReplyDeleteI would have never envisioned in my younger days that I would find such joy in bird watching. I’ve come to appreciate these simple pleasures I overlooked amidst the demands of raising children and daily life. Now, more than ever, I enjoy taking a moment to smell the roses and embrace the simple pleasures that nature offers.
DeleteThere are lessons to learn in most things we do and encounter during our day to day lives
ReplyDeleteYou are right, Jo-Anne.
