Get out the Beano - it's Wednesday Hodgepodge

I decided to use the Wednesday Hodgepodge to christen this new blog.

Out with the Old and IN with the New!

You can in join here.

1. What is a childhood habit or preference you will never outgrow?

  • I have always slept with one foot outside the covers
  • I love chocolate ice cream.

 2. Did you know July is beans month? No

What's your favorite bean?

  • Fresh green beans.
  • Pinto beans
I pretty much like most beans

Your favorite recipe that calls for beans?

As my East Tennessee Grandma would say, “A mess of beans”

A simple, comfort food with a meaty hambone, fried potatoes, cukes, tomatoes, and dandelion greens!

Okay, it's a whole meal but the beans are the star! "A Mess of Beans" is how she referred to a big pot of beans.

When it comes to chili are you team beans or team no beans?

I like both.

 3. Some historical figures have a tag line after their name, something like 'the brave' or 'the wise' or 'the mad'...what would your tag line be? Explain why?

I’m not comfortable describing myself or a tagline because my self-perception may differ from how others see me. I tend to view myself with a critical undertone.

I do remember someone I graduated from high school in 1972 who signed my high school year book. He described me as inscrutable and wrote, "Perhaps one day we'll get to really know you."

This puzzled me then, and it still puzzles me now.

4. The way to my heart is______________________________.

Genuine and sincere kindness

5. The calendar rolls into August this week, but before we go, give us four adjectives that describe your July.

  • HOT - This month has been scorching hot. On July 6th, the temperature soared to a record-breaking 119 degrees. I just received my electric/water bill. It went up to $423.32.    $116.40 increase.

  • Fiery - The Park Fire has been heavily on my mind. The proximity is uncomfortably close. (For me)  Fires have the ability to change direction unpredictably, especially within the complex mountainous terrain of deep valleys and high elevations. This makes it nearly impossible to fully predict the weather patterns that can influence the fire's behavior.

  • Frustrated -  The whole WordPress blog was just too much for me. I spent 2 weeks trying to figure it all out, and I thought I had it - and then I did something, and whoosh, I deleted it. All that work.

  • DisappointedAdd up, hot + fiery + frustrated =  disappointed.
I don't remember having such a mixed-up month.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I had a frustrating experience earlier this month with Blogger. One morning, I discovered that all the blogs I followed had disappeared. If I hadn't followed them by email, I had to rely on my memory to rediscover and follow them again. Additionally, all my posts were inexplicably turned into drafts, and I encountered other troublesome glitches.

After experiencing issues with WordPress, I believed that my other blog was somehow cursed, although I don't believe in curses. I felt that starting fresh was the best option. Unlike WordPress, setting up and posting on Blogger was much easier. With WordPress, I found it frustrating that even for a basic blog, I had to pay $12 for the starter plan. In contrast, Blogger allows us to start free.

My son texted me about the opening ceremony at the Olympics - I couldn't bring myself to watch. The thought of it hurt my heart -  regardless of who performed, it felt like a disregard for my faith and beliefs. The mere idea of entertainment mocking reverence to God upsets me. If that's not enough, we also had athletes refusing to shake hands with Israelis and a section of the audience giving the Sieg Heil salute during the playing of the National Anthem of Israel.

I never felt so good about not watching the Olympics in my life.

So why does all this still surprise me?

2nd Timothy 3:2-4

For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,  unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God."

Take care, and see you next week!

Debby

  1. Yeah I didn't watch the opening ceremony so I read about it from various perspectives and decided I too was glad I didn't see it. I have caught a couple events that I like, like gymnastics, but I can't understand why Christianity is the only religion that's allowed to be mocked. Everything that is good and wholesome is skewed as wrong now. These times we are living in are insane.

  2. I think if I wanted to move platforms I'd have to hire someone to help me do it. My daughter does anything I can't manage, because when it comes to all things tech I'm self taught. I do hope you continue to be safe from the fires.

    1. I checked into that - approximately $500. That’s crazy and a waste of money for a blog not earning any money.
I used to create websites - and have tried to stay in the know but technology is constantly moving forward and I can no longer keep up. That and I guess I’m starting to lose brain cells. 😢

  3. I'm sorry you've had such blog woes. Hoping that you stay safe from the fires.

  4. That is interesting about on foot out of the covers. Green beans are good for sure. I just thought of Green Bean Casserole. Sincere kindness is wonderful. It has been hot and our electric bill went up too! ((Hugs)) Sorry about your month. I didn't see all of the opening ceremony because I wasn't enjoying much of it. I didn't see that particular part but have definitely seen it on Facebook. Very disturbing for sure.

    1. The foot outside the covers I’ve done since I was a kid. It keeps me cool.

  5. We did watch the entire opening ceremonies and were completely disgusted by most of it. So many parts were depraved but that's how Paris is... I did enjoy Celine's solo. What a set of pipes she has. I thought she would never sing again.
I do watch the Olympics because I love seeing all of the athletes. They have worked so hard for so many years. We are sports fans and will still watch without going along with all of the ugliness.

    1. Yes. No need to punish the athletes for the opening ceremonies. They had nothing to do with them. And have worked so so hard. There are so many great athletes and so many great stories. I love watching.

    2. I haven’t watched the Olympics in 20 years! I don’t have the time to invest. It’s not my thing.

  6. Wild fires are scary and the fact that the Park fire was arson (am I remembering right?) is disturbing. I do hope that they get it under control and that you do not have to evacuate. Stay safe. We didn't watch the opening ceremony especially after we caught wind of what was being depicted. It is so maddening about peoples demands upon Israel and their attitudes. Not a total surprise, though. Darkness and evil seem to be out of control. And scary to think it could be even worse. Come Lord Jesus, come. So sorry about the wordpress and blogger issues. My side bar of blogs I follow disappeared from my Wordpress blog and I still haven't figured out how to get it back. It makes is harder to follow blogs. I hope August brings the end to this fire you can stay joyful in the midst!

  7. I've added this blog to my reader. Even though you probably won't post anything at the old one I'm keeping that URL just in case.

  11. Hi Debby, thanks for leaving a message at my blog. I did not like some of the opening ceremony, but I was familiar with some of the French history that I learned when I took French and not surprised with the craziness. I have been enjoying the Olympics and have been watching it since I was a teen. The athletes have worked hard to get there, and I am glad the US is doing so well! I hope the fire doesn't get near you. I will pray for rain.

  12. Right there with you on the Paris Olympics. Unfortunately, my husband is a fan, so we had a front-row view of that travesty.
Word Press has always seemed a bit above my paygrade, but ya. Blogger's been doing some crazy stuff lately and comments randomly going to spam or just disappearing.

PS - I've always slept with one foot outside the covers, too.

    1. I find it is more comfortable and helps me stay cooler at night.

It's disappointing that there aren't any free blogger platforms available anymore. They all seem to come with hefty charges. Sometimes, I worry that Blogger might shut down completely. I guess we'll have to brainstorm some alternative solutions.

  13. And here I thought I was the only person to sleep with their foot outside the covers!!

    God bless.

  14. We didn't and haven't watched the Olympics. I heard about it on Facebook, etc., and TV news. It made me sick to my stomach and just heartbroken. Our world is so broken. Only Jesus can fix what's wrong, but when they keep rejecting Him, they are digging their own graves. It's so very sad. On another note, I am glad you are here and not on Wordpress. My hubby had a blog on there for a number of years, and it was such a pain and always so complicated. He finally gave it up and I was so glad because he kept asking me to help him with it, and I couldn't. I said, "Blogger is so much easier, why don't you do that?" He didn't feel like it would give him as large of an audience. Oh well, it's over and done. His audience was all people who never commented...all foreigners. Anyway, I'm glad you're still here. Your granny's "mess of beans" sure sounds good to me! Those old timey folks sure knew how to cook good food! I think it's because they appreciated everything they had and never wasted anything. And they used wood stoves and cast iron skillets and pots. Everything just was better then. (but they did have to work awfully hard to get it all done!). Have a blessed and wonderful rest of your week.

  15. Haha...I sleep with one foot out too, though I'm not sure I've always done that (as in when I was a child). hmmm...so interesting what your classmate wrote.

    1. I remember doing that as a child. My grandma didn't like it and tried to scare me that the devil would grab my ankle and pull me down to hell. That only worked while I slept with her when visiting. I asked my mom if that would happen, and of course, she said NO. The funny thing, though, is my dad did the same thing - same leg. I had no idea.
Yeah, what he said bothered me for years. That was the point. It still bugs me.

  16. I guess I somehow missed this post. We did not watch the opening ceremonies of the olympics....I don't think we ever do. I know these athletes put a tremendous amount of work into making it to the olympics, and I am proud of them for their accomplishments. However....watching has never been a huge interest of mine. I honestly do not watch much TV anyways. I love fresh cream peas and fresh picked green beans. I grew up eating all kinds of beans. I always sleep with one leg out of the covers. I have no idea why, but this is just what is comfortable to me. Sorry it has been a few weeks of frustration for you...I know it is so frustrating when things get mixed up on my blog. I just don't know if I have the energy to try Wordpress.....
