This and That /Updates

Starting with the local news update.

Update on Elias: He had emergency surgery last Saturday night due to a leaking kidney and fluid in his abdomen. The surgery went well; the surgeon placed two drain tubes. By Sunday, Elias was feeling much better, eating a little, talking, and smiling. The other boy's family prefers privacy, but I’m keeping Roman in my prayers.

Bidwell Mansion Fire

There are clear signs of arson, indicating that this fire was intentional. Fire investigators can now confidently rule out the possibility of an accidental fire in this case.

The house and its contents have been destroyed, except for a few items that were moved out for renovations.

I can hardly believe Christmas is 4 days away. I've been done with shopping for a week or more, and my sweet husband wrapped all the gifts. He's been such a tremendous help to me.

I visited Margie at her care facility yesterday late afternoon, and she looked good. She's in a tough situation - with her three children. They won't move her or or take her in. It breaks my heart. I briefly thought, “What if we took her in?” but we’re unsure we could meet her increasing medical needs as she ages - plus we're getting up there too! And that would mean involving her family which might also create problems.

Margie, 80 and still sharp. What happened was,  she signed her house over to her children, believing they would sell it to help her move to a better facility, but they have refused to spend the extra money. While her Medicare and Medicaid cover her current living arrangement, it's not ideal. Her sedentary lifestyle has weakened her physical abilities, and the staff neglects her rehabilitation. Her son visits regularly and treats her well, but her older daughters make decisions about her care, which adds to her sadness.

We did enjoy a wonderful visit with her roommate, Mary, as well.

Laydee had her stitches removed this past Monday, and what a difference! She was so good to let me take a photo of her improved self. That neck ornament was definitely bugging her.

And she smells so much better now, too!

Source: Friends of the Redding Eagles

In a previous post, I noted that the tree hosting our eagles' nest for 15 years was dying. The FORE crew set up a new nest nearby, and although the eagles initially ignored it, they eventually discovered it after harsh winds destroyed their old nest. They began building in the new location and are now settled in, which is a relief since they didn't have to move the live camera feed. Egg laying typically starts early to late February, so the timing was perfect - avoiding any tragedy had they laid eggs in the old nest.

On Christmas Eve, I’ll deliver a meal to Gail before the candlelight service at our church, and afterward, we’ll probably stop by a local 24 hour-diner.

I cherish these moments during Christmas, connecting with genuine people. It’s always a blessing especially knowing that some may feel lonely. Each encounter brings a chance to meet those who just want a simple "Merry Christmas."

Before moving up here, Foodie invited a homeless man to our Thanksgiving dinner after befriending him on his way to work. The young man shared memories of his family, and I was proud of my son’s kindness.

Orange Cardamom Olive Oil Cake

I decided to make this for our Christmas meal dessert -

It will be perfect since there are just six of us, and four of us don't have a major sweet tooth. I have never made an olive oil cake before, but my friends in the Bay Area used to make them, and they are delicious.

This will be the recipe I will use.

I’m all caught up now! Time to grab some lunch and enjoy this lovely rain. I’m thinking of making some potato soup for dinner later.

Talk to you all soon.

  3. Thanks so much for the update on Elias, Debby. What a sweet face and smile! i will keep Roman in prayers, too. I'm so glad that the Redding eagles "took the bait" and have changed their nesting place. But I am sorry to hear that your dear friend in the nursing home isn't getting help from her family. I know you will do what you can to show your love and respect for her. Blessings!

  4. I must have missed a post about Elias. I will have to go back to read that. Sounds like Margie is in a situation for sure. That cannot be good for her. Praying for her as well. I have seen that cake on social media before. It looks interesting. Yes, we are approaching Christmas and as of this comment, our tree is not up, nor have we gotten baking supplies, nor purchased Christmas gifts.

    1. There are some who like the last minute shopping and putting the tree up on Christmas Eve used to be a Christmas tradition. Main thing, don’t stress about it - just enjoy how it will all unfold.

  5. So sad how some of the elderly are treated. Years ago, my one cousin shipped her mom out to Texas to visit her daughter for a few weeks and sold her house while she was down there. Then stuck her in a nursing home...which killed her. This same cousin made her siblings pay for items in the house they wanted, because she was the administrator...and took her percentage of everything sold. She is so greedy. How horrible to find out the mansion was started on purpose. Some folks are just such idiots. All that history lost now. Glad Roman is doing better. Another incident that should not have happened. I will continue to pray for him. Yay for both Laydee and the eagles. Janice

    1. While I don’t believe my sons would do that to me, you never know. Margie never thought her daughters would do this and that is what hurts. I think what I’m learning is to plan ahead and sell the house before - Stay in control as long as mental health still is good and never sign house over to anybody!

  8. I'm glad to hear Elias is doing better. The orange cinnamon cake sounds Yummy. So good that Laydee is doing better too. Margie's situation is very sad. Yes, you should help her as much as you can. Many people don't have any support, and we are here to help people along the way. I feel very bad for her in her current situation right now. And your compassion for her shows what a good person you are. Always enjoy your "this and that" posts, Debby. They are my favorite, as they are things that are going on in your life, big or small. : )

  9. Thank you so for these updates, Debby! Oh, how my heart hurts for Margie. Unfortunately, I've heard of similar situations and just can't wrap my mind around the thoughtlessness of some people. Praying right now!
I never heard of an olive oil cake, but this sounds wonderful. Big props to your hubby for the gift-wrapping. (That's my least-favorite part.) Finally, big hugs to Laydee for continuing to recover and thrive.

    1. Olive oil cakes are moist and nutritious!

I also don't enjoy gift wrapping. Honestly, I've reached a point where I don't decorate the tree or wrap gifts anymore; he takes care of it all. For years, I did everything myself and found joy in it. I'm so happy that he enjoys doing those tasks now!
