Wednesday Hodgepodge 🏌️‍♀️

1. August is National Golf month...

Do you play? Does miniature golf count? 🏌️‍♀️

Do you enjoy following golf? No.

Have you ever been to a professional tournament? No.

2. Astronaut Jim Lovell of Apollo 13 fame passed away this past Thursday.

Are you interested in outer space and what's happening today in terms of space exploration? 🪐

Not really -

I do remember when John Glenn was the first to orbit the earth and that was a big deal.

If space travel became common in your lifetime would you go?

No.

How do you personally relate to the idea of exploring something vast and mysterious...does the idea excite you, intimidate you, or something else?

Right now in my life, I’m simply not interested.  It just feels too much to take on at age 71.

Psalm 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands."

3. Describe your communication style in three words.

Direct, honest, respectful

4. Do you have a favorite cookbook?

Oh, that's a tough one! Each one of my cookbooks holds a special place in my heart, as they’ve accompanied me through the many stages of my life. Letting go of even one feels like saying goodbye to a dear friend. I have to confess, my collection has grown a bit out of control, but every single one tells a story. I picked three...

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mollie played a pivotal role in the development of farm-to-table cuisine and the emergence of new California cuisine. As a prominent chef in the Bay Area, she lived in the Berkeley Hills until recently, when she moved back to her native New York.

I am not a vegetarian myself, but I do enjoy good vegetarian cooking on occasion  I did spend 12 years, on and off, cooking for a vegetarian family from Sweden when I was their children's nanny.

My latest cookbook is a treasure I bought a couple of years ago.

Amazon Review: In this classic Southern cookbook, the “first lady of Southern cooking” (NPR) shares the seasonal recipes from a childhood spent in a small farming community settled by freed slaves. She shows us how to recreate these timeless dishes in our own kitchens—using natural ingredients, embracing the seasons, and cultivating community. With a preface by Judith Jones and foreword by Alice Waters.

A favorite celebrity chef?

Too many to name but I do like Kristen Tish.

Do you watch any cooking shows on TV?

Only the ones available to me on Hulu and Amazon Prime.

5. As a child did you have any back to school traditions?

Yes - Catching the N-Judah streetcar on Cole St where I lived and riding to Market St for a full day of school shopping with my mom and my sister. We would shop at Macy's, JCPenney's, and the Emporium, and eating lunch at the diner in Woolworth's.

If so, did you carry on those same traditions with your own children?

No, I had three sons, and my boys weren't into shopping with their mother! Anyway, they got new jeans and shirts. They were also easy to please. The boys and I did have to go out to buy school shoes - back then they measured your foot so we were always assured of a good fit.  We always had round table pizza in Menlo Park afterward.

Do you have any back-to-school traditions you've started on your own?

After Labor Day, I would go through the clothes the boys could still wear that weekend. I would wash, mend, and sew on buttons, and then iron the new clothes while listening to The Beach Boys music blasting. September and October have the best weather on the peninsula, so it was always hot. It felt like the last hurrah before school started. We ended the day with pizza for dinner.  (okay so we like pizza) 🍕🍕🍕

6. Insert your own random thought here.

All this talk about school is fitting since tomorrow is the first day of school, and I live right across the street from the bus stop. I'm looking forward to the sound of the school bus and watching the kids as they line up for the bus. It feels like I, too am getting ready for school. In two weeks, I will begin another BSF leader training for this year, and my Bible study year will start on the 10th.  Instead of getting a backpack, I’m cleaning out my dirty old briefcase and buying sticky notes and new pens. I don’t need new clothes. I just need a servant’s heart to guide new women who love the Lord and want to learn.

  1. I have never understood the attraction of golf.

  2. Good answers - especially the last one.

My wife tells me off for playing too much golf. The other day I was calmly practicing my golf, all alone; when suddenly she appeared and started shouting, "Golf ... Golf ... Golf ... it's always golf with you when there's so much to do at home."

I nearly had a heart attack. I never expected to see her on the golf course at one in the morning.

    God bless.

  3. I own The Moosewood Cookbook but haven't pulled that one off the shelf in a long time. Now I'm going to revisit her recipes there. Sometimes you need a vegetarian recipe and these were always good and seemed do-able. Enjoy your new year in BSF!

  4. Good morning interesting post - I do love to watch lots of sports on the tv but not golf, and my husband never watches any sports-so it's just me. I am 75 now so back when space travel started we watched it live at school I do follow it as it is today's explorers.
I used to have 100's of cookbooks and when we moved to the lake 5 years ago I donated most all of them to the local library sale, and did sell a few on my blog back then.I always enjoyed just reading cookbooks. I love Molly's cookbooks and had all of them-I don't think I ended up keeping any of those. I was a vegetarian for about 10 years back in 70's and '80's My favorite books were by Tassajara the author was a monk back when I didn't know I had celiac I made all of our bread mostly from his bread book and I still use his recipe for pancakes for my husband.
I really like that chef too and I do watch a lot of cooking shows and compitions on food network
I don't have children, my husband did not want children and I couldn't have them do to serious endomitriosus but I think the schools are horrible right now and if I did have children would homeschool sorry for long reply

    1. I wanted to homeschool mine but their father (my ex) wouldn’t allow it. I told my sons if they ever had children, my husband and I would commit to homeschooling them. But unfortunately they’re not having any.

  5. Golf does not interest me either, mini golf is more my style!
I would never want to do space travel either.
Those are some interesting cook books!

    1. There’s a mini golf near us and we went in to check out the price and it was reasonable. I want to get the family out and do mini golf when it cools down.

  6. I remember how shoe salesmen used to carefully measure our feet ... sweet. My girlfriend's father owned such a store where we children delighted in x-raying our feet on the fluoroscope.
I'm feeling a tug to put Edna Lewis' cookbook in my Amazon cart!

  8. What an eclectic collection of cookbooks, Debby. I'm impressed! You brought back some great memories about preparing to go back to school, too. So thrilled that our three granddaughters now attend a public/charter school where they have to wear uniforms. How great is that for simplifying your wardrobe? I'm looking forward to hearing all about their first week this weekend. Blessings!

    1. There was a time I loved cooking - and acquired a lot if different types of cookbooks. I don’t enjoy it like I used to. Cooking most our food from scratch gets tiring -

  9. I'm not into golf either. Sometimes we watch it just to see what's happening. It's been ages since I did mini golf. It was always fun.
I have never been into cooking or baking. Its all about survival mode in the kitchen. I do treasure several old cookbooks from my Mom and Mother in law and have used some of their recipes many times.
I have little interest in space travel now but ws glued to the tv for moon landings and all that that entailed.
I know you are going to be a fabulous leader at BSF and your group will be fully engaged because of your thirst for God's Word.

    1. Some of my favorite cookbooks are the fundraiser church cookbooks.
Thanks for saying that, Sue. That’s what I love and we had last year - fully engaged women who wanted to deep dive! I’m praying for that again.

  10. I remember the first two cookbooks well! I actually remember when they used an X-Ray in shoe stores to see if the shoes fit!!

    1. I had forgotten about that. I looked it up and they stopped using them by the 1960’s. Amazing how fast and loose they were with the X-rays back then.

Before hodgepodge even mentioned golf, I priced the local mini golf here for a family night soon. It’s been awhile.

  13. I can't say much for golf or space either. You sure do have a lot of cookbooks there. I used to watch the Food Network not I don't know if it is even on. lol

  15. What great back to school memories and traditions! I love doing all the mending etc while blasting the Beach Boys and then getting pizza. It's felt a little strange the last couple of back to school seasons, not having a kid going to school after so many years of that being the rhythm of our August and September. Hope you're having a great week!

  17. There is one church cookbook that I go to for recipes. Other than that it was the Betty Crocker Cookbook. Lately recipes come on my husbands Facebook page and he saves ones we like. I dont do Facebook, nor do I golf. Use to play mini golf (putt putt) when my kids were little though. Janice

  18. Enjoyed reading your answers. I like your communication style. Those are interesting cookbooks you have. That shopping sounded like a fun day and I remember Woolworth's. It's always fun when something ends with pizza. Love your random. Hope that everything goes well for you. Take care.

  19. All the best as you begin another BSF year. Hard to believe that it is time to begin Bible studies again. Might be a time for a "first day" tradition as you head back:) I have wonderful back to school shopping memories as well. I enjoyed thinking about them as I wrote my own answers this week. Blessing to you this weekend -
