Adam - a Book Review

I usually don't write book reviews, and this is only my second time. The first was for my cousin's devotional. I don't have time to read just any book. However, I wanted to share my thoughts on this book because the author is the husband of an amazing woman in my BSF group.

I finally finished the book, Adam. It took me some time because biblical fiction isn't my usual genre. I wanted to read it because he kindly gave it to me and even signed it. Who knows? It could become a screenplay one day! The book was first written as a screenplay and then turned into a book.

The beginning was challenging to navigate at first. I just had a hard time with the imagery and expanded extra-biblical narrative.  But I persevered, and as I delved deeper into the story, the author skillfully wove a story that culminated in an exquisite conclusion, beautifully tying together all the strands in a way that was profoundly touching to me. Now, I’m excited for my husband to read it so we can discuss it.

Summary:

The author presents a thought-provoking "what if?" scenario loosely aligned with scripture, depicting Adam as a boy rather than an adult. This interpretation raises interesting points, especially since Judaism recognizes a boy as a man at 13. Personally, I believe Adam was a man and hadn't considered whether or not he was a boy-man or a man-man.  However, those uncomfortable with extra-biblical narratives might not appreciate this book. Note that the Chosen series also follows an extra-biblical narrative.

I often think about the stories in scripture that aren't told. However, God wisely decided not to share these details because they are not as important as His overall plan.

Imagine a story where Adam and Eve lived together with God, receiving wisdom and care for years before the fall.  God knew that Adam and Eve would choose to sin, but He did not make that choice for them. By giving humans free will, He allowed them to make their own decisions. The fall happened when they decided to eat from the forbidden tree (Genesis 3:6). Even so, God’s plan included redemption through Jesus Christ, showing His love and grace (Ephesians 1:4-5; Romans 5:8).

I'm happy I finished it. I wanted to tell Cathy, "YES, I read your husband's book," when I see her again.

This might be my last review. Normally, I don’t finish books that don’t engage me after a few chapters. This time, I’m glad I kept reading. I think this is a book I might read again, this time with a better understanding since I already know the ending.

  2. Interesting, yes! That's so cool that you know the author ... at least via his wife.

  3. I've been known to go back and re-read a piece of fiction. I always find new details when I do.
