Happy Monday!
I like Mondays, but I didn’t always feel this way when I was younger. I read that people spend about 33 minutes complaining about Monday. When you think about it, that’s a lot of time wasted grumbling about something we can’t change.
Monday comes and Monday goes.
So let's dig into this Monday post about...Friday!
After returning from the grocery store, we decided to have a picnic and take Laydee along, as she’s been so bored lying around during her healing process. We drove about 10 miles past Old Shasta, along Whiskeytown Creek, to French Gulch.
The day was beautiful, with pleasant breezes and temperatures in the mid-70s. This site was once part of a large estate featuring 1,000 fruit orchards, including apples, pears, and peaches, as well as 400 grapevines. Established around 1850 by a local pioneer searching for gold, and Shasta became his home.
A portion of the property has been designated for various uses, with the house now under the jurisdiction of the parks department. We visited a small area off the road, featuring decent bank fishing and remnants of the original heritage fig and apple trees.
Berries make it a great foraging spot in season. We missed picking figs this summer, and most apples were gone, except those on the upper branches.
I could practically taste the sweetness of those apples in the tree, and the aroma was delightful. It's been a long time since picking apples off a tree.

My husband, ☝ ☝ ever the romantic, always seeks ways to delight me. He sets off to climb this old apple tree, its sturdy branches laden with ripe apples just waiting to be picked. While he pretends it’s my wish for sweet, succulent apples that drives him, we both know the truth: it’s his desire for me to create an apple dessert that truly inspires his adventurous spirit.

I always deeply cherish my time here. When we travel 10 to 12 miles out and find ourselves in solitude, and it's truly remarkable for someone like me, who has always lived in congested areas with hordes of people and cars. My mind often wanders back to the days of the gold rush, and I try to envision the experiences of those pioneers.
The whole time we were there, not one person came - we were truly alone. 💗

Walking around the yard - the flowers that struggle in the intense heat are starting to bloom again.
I think it’s fair to say that Autumn has arrived in Shasta County. Although our Fall differs from that of other regions in the country, it is indeed present and has been acknowledged. Daytime temperatures hover around 80, while the evenings cool down to the 50s and 60s, making it perfect for sleeping with the windows wide open.
I've never had better sleep.
I'm excited to embrace this Monday with a sense of renewed energy and feelings of peace and gratitude. It's incredible to think that this feeling began with a simple picnic last Friday. I feel well-rested and ready to take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead for this week.
Until Next Time,
Debby
What a wonderful Monday post, Debby. I enjoyed reading it all. Your photos of your time spent in Old Shasta and other places are so pretty, especially that first one with the clouds. That big old white house is charming; it's too bad that someone doesn't live there with all that property. That was a sweet gesture for your husband to climb the tree and pick some apples, and I'd love to hear about what apple dessert you decide to make with them. I'm glad this cooler weather is giving you better sleep. Love that berry photo - there is something about it that's just delightful. I chuckled when you said, "I read that people spend about 33 minutes complaining about Monday." Thanks for embracing this day of the week. I never minded Mondays either, unless an appt. is scheduled, ugh. Your post was the first I visited this Monday morning, and I loved it all. ; )

Since it is a historical house it’s more like a museum. The whole area there is comforting and I’m grateful it’s still there even after our Carr fire in 2018.
DeleteAs for Mondays I always figured it was a day we have to go through to get to the weekend. So why complain?
I’m loving this season - everything in it, excites me. Even cleaning and organizing the garage! Ha must be Autumn fever!
What a beautiful place you featured here, Debby! I would find myself feeling uplifted and renewed by such a visit, too. I'm sure whatever apple dish you concoct will be delicious, too. Wishing you a happy Monday and a beautiful week ahead!
ReplyDeleteThanks Martha - I’m wishing you all the same!
DeleteMondays don't bother me since I retired in 2006, but they did before I retired. I would love the area you visited and we have many that I could visit, less than 10 miles there are 3 of them, but alas, here I sit trapped in the house .. I get my adventures from blog friends. I enjoyed this one... love the names of the places you passed to get there.. glad Laydee could get out for a ride.
ReplyDeleteThose old gold mining towns always have interesting names. There’s always a “gulch” in some of them. Hmmm could make for a fun future post!
DeleteMondays don't bother me - it means I have the house to myself and can pick up a little bit from the weekend. LOL
ReplyDeleteI loved your bright flowers there. Our days are getting a little cooler and I like you love them.
That’s how I used to look at it to when my husband worked. I could actually get things done- something I’m still not used to since he retired in Dec 2020.
DeleteI just discovered your blog from Mrs. White's blog home.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed visiting here today...love the story about the apples and the history of this pretty place. Have a happy day.
Shirley from Virginia:)
Hi Shirley - a pleasure to meet you. I hope you’ll visit again. God bless
DeleteWhat a beautiful place and a lovely day! Glad Laydee was able to go along.
ReplyDeleteI love your hubby's apple adventures.
Oh yes, that man is always doing something that makes me laugh. 🤭 ❤️
DeleteHello, I enjoyed this post. I had to smile about your husband. :-) What apple treat did you make him?
ReplyDeleteLove, Carla
I kept it simple and used puff pastry and made an apple roll.
DeleteIt sounds wonderful. I hope the happy, relaxed feeling lasts for you.
ReplyDeleteI hope so too.
DeleteOh boy, I wish Dave and I could be up there and have a picnic all alone in God's Country. After our car gets the ok from DMV ... Check engine light on and it didn't pass the smog. Daughter in laws brother will be putting in a new "thingy" that should do it. and then we can get our tags and maybe go a few miles to see something different. These old cars 1999 ... we don't dare go very far. Such is life and we are learning to be satisfied but oh its difficult for us when we have been so active all of our married lives. The new normal...

I can imagine. Well getting your car up and running and legal should help even if it’s not any cross country trips. It’s so soothing to the soul to just take a couple of hours and get away from people.
DeleteWhat a wonderful place for a picnic! You should go more often. I bet Laydee had a ball. You are so right about complaining about something that we have no control over. If only that was the worst thing we had to complain about!
ReplyDeleteNow that the temps are cooler, we’re going to try and do this once a week. It doesn’t take much to just get away.
DeleteThese Monday's come around pretty fast. No complaining here about Mondays!! I'm thankful for every day. :)
ReplyDeleteSame here!
DeleteI'm so glad y'all made an effort to enjoy the bounty God has given. Don't you wish more people did the same?
ReplyDeleteIt was fun! 🤩
DeleteIf Harvey tried to climb that tree, I would be extremely worried about him falling. Hope you made your Hubby a lovely apple dessert.
ReplyDeleteQuiet times in the wonderful world that God has made us is perfect.
God bless.
It’s the BEST!
DeleteLove this post. You are always very inspiring and I really need that most days around here. Have a fantastic week.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful Monday post. Wish that house was mine. Just lovely. I missed my blackberries this year. My husband cut them down before he realized what he did. UGH Janice
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a lovely time.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a very peaceful outing, taking in the freshness of the air and even watching hubby climb an apple tree. Hopefully you gathered enough apples to make that dessert he had in mind!! You are so right about all the complaining of Monday's ...Of course, if you are one that works the weekend and have days off during the week, then it might be Wednesday that they dread...(grandson has Tuesday's off). lol. Glad Fall is gently "Falling" into place for you all. Our temps today are going to be in the 90's.. not too much Fall around here.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a wonderful time was had
ReplyDeleteSounds like a lovely day. We used to have a good berry picking spot out where my folks house is but the bushes all got pulled out some years ago. Now the only ones around there now never get enough water to produce any blackberries worth picking. My mom's yard has a variety of fruit trees including an apple that has produced some good ones this year. I need to remember to get outside and pick some when I am out there this weekend.
