A Heavy Heart

Today, I'm here with a heart weighed down by sadness...

S. is a flight nurse with Reach Helicopter, a medical response helicopter service in Redding. Although I do not know her personally, many people in our community are familiar with her, and she is a member of our (BSF) group. Last night, S. and two other crew members - one pilot and a paramedic- had just completed a patient drop-off at Davis Medical Center when their helicopter tragically went down on Highway 50 near Sacramento.

From what we know, she was trapped under the helicopter, prompting a group of approximately 15 civilians to assist in lifting the aircraft off her until EMT came to rescue her. Both she and her fellow crew members are currently in critical condition. Fortunately, no casualties occurred on the ground, as the pilot skillfully maneuvered to avoid pedestrians and vehicles on the highway. The crew was on their way home to Redding. I cling to the belief that the brave actions of the rescuers could determine the difference between life and death for her and all the glory will belong to God!

Our entire community is in shock, as many people knew them. Redding's number one industry is the Medical profession. S. was a longtime member of BSF and had a deep love for the Lord. That’s how I learned about it from my teaching leader. Just shocked.

Tragedy always reminds us of the temporary nature of this world and the hope we have in eternity. S. loves the Lord and has served Him for many years. I have no doubt our Heavenly Father has her in His loving arms.

    1. Yes it can be.
I'm focusing on the positives: the miraculous way the pilot avoided the cars on the highway and the people who helped lift the helicopter. There are some good signs.

  3. Oh wow, what a horrific tragedy, yet we still cling to the hope that the injured ones will be able to survive this and live to give glory to God for His miraculous intervention and rescue. However, if indeed God chooses to call one or more of them home to heaven, our prayer is that they each individually already know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and are ready to be with Him in eternity. Our thoughts and prayers are with these brave folks and their families as they continue to fight for their lives. And we thank the Lord for those other brave souls who came to their rescue in such a marvelous way. Praying with you for these dear folks now. Please keep us updated as you are able.

  4. Praying for S and the rest of the crew right now. Such a tragic accident. Reminds me of my grandsons accident in 22. The truck he was riding in wrecked and the truck landed on top of Trey. God was there...people lifted the truck and although it was a very long recovery, he did survive and is doing well. Please keep us updated on this.

    1. Oh my goodness, that really does sound like a tragic situation with your grandson’s accident. I’m so relieved to hear he’s doing well; that truly is a blessing. I find so much hope in that, Shug. Thank you for sharing that.

  6. Such a sad situation. We had a medical helicopter crash years ago with all of the crew and patient perishing. They now placed a memorial inside the hospital to honor those who lost their lives. So sad. I hope those in critical condition live. Will send prayers. Janice

    1. Adding another comment a day after my first one (above).... the story of this crash was on national news last night. I had already read and commented on your post. There is the comfort that no matter how this turns out, your nurse friend knows and loves the Lord.

    1. I'll have to look it up.

Well, there is a lot to be thankful for - the pilot who did not hit any cars, so no ground casualties, and the people who helped lift the helicopter off S.
That already shows two huge miracles. It could have involved many other innocent people on the highway.

  14. I'm so sorry to hear this, Debby. I just whispered a prayer for all three of them. I like what your ASAP stands for. Have never heard of that, but it's good. : )

Sending thoughts to you tonight of comfort and love, Debby. It really hits home when you know someone from your hometown who has been injured.

  16. I was shocked by the news of the crash on Monday. This weekend I was away at a Christian Women's Retreat un near Placerville area. Saturday Night an elderly lady had a bad fall landing on her hip and shoulder. The paramedics were called and it was determinded that she needed to be air lifted to a Sacramento hospital so we actually watched the helicopter land in the medow, load up the lady and carry her down to the waiting helicopter and then watched it take off heading to the hospital. We found out the next morning that she suffered a broken shoulder and thumb and thank goodness no broken hip. I don't know where the helicopter originated from and since it was around midnight when all this happened I don't know even what color the copter was as all we could see was the lights.

    1. In the rural areas the community really relies on these medical helicopters to get them into the hospital. When my folks lived in Shingletown they paid a yearly fee for the service, to get them to a hospital in Redding. It wasn’t much at all and still isn’t. It’s a wonderful service that brings medical attention much closer.

  18. I don't often hear news from CA anymore. This is a very sad event. I am praying for S and the other med evac people. (I much prefer helicopter to plane because the pilot can maneuver better)
I am a BSF member and will share this with my group.

  23. That's so sad. Prayers for complete recovery for all of them. Years ago a U of M survival flight plane crashed into Lake Michigan while on their way back from securing a heart for a patient. All 6 on board were killed. I worked in Pathology at the time and knew a couple of them from our work with Gift of Life. It really rocked the whole university.

    1. Oh Jeannette that’s so sad. In these rural mountain areas, these medical helicopter transport services are so important. They are all three in critical condition but S is in unstable critical condition due to a brain bleed. At this time she is really is having a hard time. 😢
