Windy Day
I opted to stay home from church this morning while my husband attended. He was responsible for working the sound system and picking up bagels for the congregation. Given the strong wind gusts ranging from 50 to 65 mph, I felt that my little Kia Niro would not handle the conditions safely, and I didn't want to experience a stressful 30-minute drive. As a result, I decided it was best to remain at home.
I took the opportunity to finish my Bible study and plan to watch the recorded service once it is uploaded to YouTube.
We've experiencing some wild spring weather lately. I hesitate to complain since many of my blogging friends are dealing with serious weather issues like tornado watches. Thankfully, my SIL in Cullman hasn’t been affected, but a town just 30 miles away experienced significant damage from a tornado. My late brother and his family moved from Scott County, TN, to Alabama for a better life, and his wife mentioned that if she had known that they were moving to a tornado-prone area, she would have been more cautious about the decision.
Yesterday, we discussed the differences between tornadoes and earthquakes. She has a strong fear of earthquakes because there is no warning before they occur, which is one reason she refuses to come out here to visit. Interestingly, I prefer this lack of warning compared to having alerts. When an earthquake happens, we just deal with it without the burden of pre-worrying.
It works for me.
I’ve experienced a couple of tornadoes in my life. Once, when I was in Indiana, I stayed in my aunt’s basement for safety. I felt scared because I worried about my family at another house. After the tornado passed, we went outside to see the damage caused by the winds.
Another time, while driving across the country in a travel trailer, we were in Grand Island, Nebraska, and law enforcement came in the middle of the night to tell everyone to leave. We were on the road and actually saw the tornado. My mom was really scared, which made me uncomfortable because I don’t like being around panic. I think this is why I usually try to stay calm, even if I don’t always succeed. I remember my dad firmly telling my mom to stop scaring us.
So my heart goes out to everyone hunkered down all day yesterday.
To support my sons I often encourage them in a text message to start their week.
I do pray they find a church community to engage with. Many churches no longer hold services on Wednesdays, which has become challenging given their Sunday through Thursday work schedule. While attending church isn't mandatory, I'm concerned they are missing out on quality spiritual nourishment.
One of my sons, whose wife grew up in the LDS (Latter-day Saints) community, has become quite disillusioned with the teachings of that church, leading her to adopt a more agnostic viewpoint toward organized religion altogether. I did suggest to my son a local non-denominational Bible-teaching church that offers Saturday evening worship services, mirroring their Sunday schedule. He expressed that he wouldn't attend without his wife, as he feels it wouldn't be right for him to go alone.
God is in charge. I focus on what I can do without being a nuisance—Both my boys were raised in the church, so they are familiar with and once cherished the lifestyle. As for me, who didn't share the same Christian upbringing as they did, it bothers me.
All I can do is pray that their friends who don’t believe may come to Christ and that the fervor of a new believer will reignite their once-passionate love for Jesus.
Nevertheless, I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
Revelation 2;4
Well, that wind is sounding serious outside, so I am getting off here -
The husband called and is on his way home.
Take Care, and always cherish your first love!
Debby

Cherishing my first love today, Debby. Your sons' dilemma sound just like the ones my own children are having. All we can really do is pray. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteKeeping them in prayer!
DeleteI believe you are so right in leading your grown children without bossing them or interfering! Oh my gosh, that tree almost split down the middle! We are in the midst of a tornado watch, such howling winds!
ReplyDeleteStay safe. The winds here today have been fierce. It’s been awhile since we’ve had such strong winds.
DeleteI have a friend who lives in Alabama now until mid Spring. I always worry about her with those tornados. I could never live in those states. Been in a tornado myself. Not fun. Janice
ReplyDeleteTornadoes are much more dangerous. I couldn’t live where there are tornadoes. I’d be a mess
DeleteWe had terrible winds here yesterday along with the worst air quality in the US, because of dust coming over from the west. Our power went out for the afternoon. Today it's snowing!
ReplyDeleteI think you were wise to stay home.
Praying for our kids is the best thing we can do. I'm praying for mine as well.
My goodness what a crazy weekend all over. That Texas dust storm was awful
DeleteThank you for updating us on your family members in Cullman! I've only been in one (minor) earthquake, but wasn't overly alarmed. Tornadoes on the other hand have always been right up there with air travel and snakes. I'd tell my son there's "no way" I could live here. Never say never ..... and give it to God!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the tornadoes! lol š
DeleteI said the same thing about living here due to the hot dry summers - the Bay Area has such nice moderate weather year round. Yet here I am and I’m loving it.
That was a big branch of the tree to come down. We had lots of wind for just about an hour and then it was calm again. Last year a tornado went by 1/2 hour from our house. Even though it was a small one it was still pretty scary.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine. Trees were uprooted today all over today. For about 12 hours the wind never let up. I hope it blows away!
DeleteYou had more damage than we did here in GA!
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean - when the kids get older - we have to let go and let God.
Oh yes, Let go and Let God do the convicting!
DeleteTrust in the Lord and continue to pray for your children. God knows what is going on and He is still/always in control.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
You are so right Victor!
Deletegood idea to stay home and not take your small car out in the wind. last night at 9:40 I sat straight up in bed because of the noise of the WIND.. my Helene/Milton PTSD continues when I hear high wind, I spent about 30 minutes on the sofa and it passed and I went back to bed... the same storm is right now pounding new England.
ReplyDeleteglad all our blog friends are safe once again, I have checked with those I know in the path.. I don't think there is a state that is safe all the time.
Im sorry for you how the winds can trigger those feelings from the Helene/Milton hurricanes. After one huge earthquake we had, every time I would hear a bunch of car alarms I would get a sick feeling in my stomach. During and after the earthquake, car alarms were going off - house alarms etc. It still brings up the memory of that event.
DeleteNot much going on in Oregon. At least I don’t hear about it that much.
I think there are more and more younger folks who have share the same feelings as your sons. It saddens me even for my own grands. I think the covid year might have caused some big issues when we were forced to not have church. Saddens me more. Prayer is the biggest thing we can all do....and pray for one another's families. I think the entire country has experienced the fierce winds. It is very windy here today again! I'm just praying that our Miss, Alabama and Georgia friends did not have damage. Happy St. Patrick's Day....be sure and wear your green.
ReplyDeleteI’m wearing a green sweater today!
DeleteWow, those are some winds you had up in your neck of the woods. It just rained a few times in our area. Weather guys say it will rain off and on all day today, so I guess we won't be pulling weeds as we had planned to do. Darn..haha...
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the earthquakes. Been through several big ones but they are a lot safer than the horrible tornados and hurricanes that come regularly.
Sue
No rain yet here today -
DeleteEarthquakes can be deadly but the percentages are better that all you have is some shattered nerves; mostly from transplants and tourists! If it should be worse, then our natural instincts kick in and we’re in immediate survival mode. Plus prayer helps too!
Hi, we are having wind today. CRAZY wind.... maybe a pot of gold will fly on in.
ReplyDeleteHee Hee.
I too send text messages to encourage our two boys. I also pray they will stay on the path ... praying for your family too.
Love, Carla
Maybe you have our wind. Makes me wonder where it went. It doesn’t work that way but still…
DeleteMine haven’t totally strayed off the path. They just don’t go to church and my married one did tell me, while he loves his wife he recognized how his LDS wife and him are unequally yoked. He figured that by himself. So I also pray for my DIL to come to know the real Jesus.
I hope you stay safe in your city with the high winds. I nearly fell over last Thursday leaving Panera. I was walking into 25 mile wind to get to my car. I made it though. Hopefully your sons will remain with Jesus as their savior. Praying for you and family!!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, the Revelations verse is one of my favorites. Many people stop having love in their hearts, and it's a good reminder to keep that love burning, not just for your spouse, but have love in your heart for your neighbor, your friends, your family, your fellow man. That is how this verse speaks to me. Wow, look at the damage that was done from the winds! We had a windy day yesterday, and today we had a wet snow. Tornadoes and earthquakes are scary. That picture says it all. Thanks for sharing all the weather pics with us, Debby. I don't know where you come across them, but I appreciate them so much. It's good to know what's happening in our area.
ReplyDelete~Sheri
I would have stayed home too.
ReplyDeleteNasty winds there. Here we got more snow, which I hope is the last hurrah for winter. Mind you March is very unpredictable. Like you I hope my sons find their way back to church. The eldest teaches in a Catholic school, but has butted heads with the priest they have and is hoping that a new one will be more open to the children. Youngest still follows most of the teachings, just does not attend church unless he is at home with us.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I don't like strong windy weather as strong winds can do so much damage, when the wind is strong sometimes I can fill I am going to be blown over, or if in a car you can feel the car rocking and I do not like that
ReplyDeleteHere in Michigan it's rare for us to feel an earthquake. I remember back in 1979 we were visiting my in laws in a mobile home and suddenly it started to shake, not a lot but enough to splash water out of a glass. We thought it was the wind or a truck going by but turns out it was a earthquake in Ohio that we felt all the way up here. It was interesting. Tornados aren't nearly as rare and we do get a few every tornado season.
ReplyDeleteI am not in a tornado prone area and have only once experienced (a mild) earthquake, so I am blessed in that area. But I do think warnings, alerts and having to take shelter would be very stressful. Here's to a calm and sunny week ahead!:)
