This and That

Old Courthouse and Jail which is now a museum.

This was from our snow yesterday.

The town of Old Shasta is west of us,

and that was more snow than what we received.

The old brick ruins of an old Gold Mining town.

My husband finished the four-berry Hamantaschen.

I personally like the apricot flavor best, but the berry ones were tasty too!

We expect rain and wind in the coming days, but there's no more snow. March began quietly, like a lamb with 80-degree temperatures, and as it looks now, it could go out like a Lion.

I reached out to my late brother's family in Alabama to see how they were doing. They were all staying safe in my niece's tornado shelter designed to withstand E-F5 tornadoes, except for my sister-in-law, Edith. She chose to stay at home with her dogs because her house has a basement. While we spoke on the phone, she was monitoring the weather updates and decided it was time to get her medicine and take the dogs down to the basement for added safety. She made the basement cozy, setting up a bed and everything she needed to feel comfortable.

We prayed for their safety, and I truly hope they will be okay.

Laydee is showing a little improvement, and that’s a good sign because the second shot will really be when it’s fully taken hold. She is managing her lameness in her own way—not in any pain. My husband built an attachment to the wooden step to make it easier for her to go on and off the sofa.

I was planning this year to just get some freshly sliced corned beef, some rye bread (I like Swedish rye best), and some Swiss cheese and make a hearty potato and cabbage soup for St Patrick's Day.

Well, the husband said he would miss the aroma of it cooking in the house. It isn't that hard of a meal. I always enjoyed the way my Mom made it, or anyone else but me. We used to go to a Pub here in town, but they sold out, and it's no longer an Irish Pub. It's not my favorite meal - but I do like it. So it's looking like I will cave in and cook a corned beef this year.

The things I do for my husband, all because he bakes!

I’m finally feeling refreshed after losing that hour of sleep. I guess it’s just part of getting older, since it never used to bother me this much. Next year, I’ll try to prepare for it better. This week, I took some extra naps and went to bed earlier, and now I feel much more rested.

I hope your Saturday has been enjoyable, restful, safe and warm.

Until next time,

Debby

  1. What is the heart meaning in the soup name? The snow coming down on the yellow flowers is gorgeous!!! And who knew how beautiful a shot of an old mining town could be?

    1. Typo alert. I meant hearty. I’ll correct it. For the life of me I couldn’t understand what you meant. Hahaha!

  2. I haven't even thought about cooking the corned beef and cabbage dinner. I suppose I should, but hubby really doesn't care that much about it, and it's just the two of us and I don't want to eat it all by myself, so I'll probably just pass on it Our son Scott's birthday is the 18th, but he is coming tomorrow to celebrate with us and wants lasagna. We were going to have ribeye steaks, but they have gotten so expensive and it is supposed to rain tomorrow and we can't grill them outside, so he said he'd rather have the lasagna. So I've got it ready to put together when I get home from church and get it in the oven right away for dinner after church. Benton is coming over but Rose has to work, so it will be a small party. I'm just praying the rain/storms aren't too severe here. Those bad storms in the midwest/south are coming across and we are supposed to get some bad weather, but hopefully not THAT bad. Your snow is certainly beautiful! And Laydee looks wonderful! I hope she gets totally better soon. Take care and enjoy your corned beef and cabbage!!

    1. It’s always a hit and miss. Sometimes the meat will be lean and other times it looks good on the outside but fatty on the inside. I usually buy it at the store. The Butcher I go to has such big pieces but they do look good. Last year my son bought one big one, cut it in half and he lives alone. The next month he made it again.

Happy Birthday to Scott. A homemade Lasagna sounds better!

Yeah those storms are bad. I need to check again. I have a nephew in Arkansas. Mississippi got hit hard. I hope they don’t come your way.

    1. Those are California poppies. They do look cheery - hope in the midst of snow.

  4. That snow is crazy! It's a poignant beauty over the flowers.
The storms in the south are sad. Glad your SIL is ok.
I'm happy that the injection seems to be helping Laydee, gives good hope for the next ones!
I've never made corned beef, but I do make some corned beef buns that we'll be having in our nod to St Patty's day!

  5. the only corned beef I have eaten is canned, because it was cheap and we were POOR and mother cooked it at least once a week... never had the Real Thing. would you email me a photo of the steps for the sofa? Beau is going to need them soon and how do you get Laydee in the car?
hope your family is safe in the basement and all our blog friends who are in the path of this storm, I have several family members in the path in GA for today and my brother is in the heat of it as we speak in Augusa.

  6. Wow look at that snow! We paid a lot of money for the corn beef; everything is so expensive. Wishing you a beautiful day my friend.

  7. Wow! Snow? We got very nasty wind and rain. In fact, we have large tree limbs down and one entire tree down out back to deal with (when it's over). We don't do any special meal for St.Patricks Day. Hoping the pupper feels better soon.

  8. Your snow looks lovely! We are originally from Eastern Oregon and now that we are in Arkansas, I sure do miss all that snow! Have a great week ahead!

  9. So glad to hear that your family in Alabama made it through the storms, Debby. We also spent the night on an inflated mattress in our basement/laundry room for precaution. Praising God for keeping us safe through the night! I hate the time change, too. We've taken to setting our clocks forward the day before so that we somewhat trick ourselves into thinking we are already in that time change. It really helped this time around. Blessings!

    1. That’s a good idea Martha! I hope I can remember that for next year. The Fall back doesn’t bother me at all.
I don’t believe I could sleep knowing that a tornado was on the way.

  10. What a gorgeous juxtaposition, those blooms rising above the snow!
Neither Tom or I are overly fond of corned beef ... then he informed me this morning (that) he's growing weary of slow-cooker meals. So next week's on him (lol).
    Big hugs for Laydee girl!

  11. Is that snow in your town or the town of Old Shasta? Looks like they got quite a bit. It looks so pretty on our California Poppies. So glad to hear Laydee is doing better. Your husband's four fruit pastries look scrumptious. Corned beef and potato and cabbage soup sounds delicious. I hope you get a chance to make it. Have a restful Sunday, Debby, and a good week ahead. I really do enjoy reading your posts. They are filled with so many different things, and "this and that" posts are really my favorite ones.

That photo really showcases the poppies in a way, we hardly see!

  12. The snow on those yellow flowers sure is pretty, but if that happened here the flowers would not survive. Hope they do in your area. Janice
