Crater Lake, Oregon 🌋

A couple of weeks back, two of my three sons returned to Crater Lake, Oregon, a location we had explored together years ago when they were young. At that time, I was a single parent, and it was our first real vacation as a family of four! I used all my savings to travel up there and have a truly enjoyable vacation. However, every bit of it was worthwhile, and it gave me a sense of being fully capable of supporting my sons. Clearly, those memories held a special significance for them, as well -  sparking a desire to relive those cherished moments

ℹ️ Crater Lake Information

The rim of the caldera varies in height from 7,000 to 8,000 feet, and indeed, those are snowy areas along the edges. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 1,949 feet, making it the deepest lake in the U.S., the second-deepest in North America, and the seventh-deepest globally.

The volcanic activity 🌋 in this region is supplied by subduction occurring off the Oregon coast as the Juan de Fuca Plate descends beneath the North American Plate.

Subduction is a geological process where a denser tectonic plate slides beneath a less dense plate and sinks into the Earth's mantle, typically occurring at convergent plate boundaries. This process forms deep ocean trenches, releases fluids that cause melting and magma formation, and leads to volcanic activity and powerful earthquakes along the subduction zone

Wow, look at that stunning rock formation!

Wizard Island.

Several years back, during the autumn season, my husband and I (and Laydee) took a couple of days to Crater Lake since he had never visited and had always wanted to see it. We booked a stay at a dog-friendly bed and breakfast.

Wizard Island on Crater Lake, wrapped in a thick, eerie fog that obscured the cold water below. It felt like stepping into a mystical realm where the lake was a hidden treasure, just waiting to be discovered.

Only we could barely see it. 👀

Despite our attempt to see the lake, the snowflakes kept falling, blanketing the landscape in white. My husband never had the chance to see the lake.  Although we’ve ventured up to Oregon multiple times, we’ve yet to revisit Crater Lake.

My son, Navy.
Shh, don't tell him I posted his photo.

He's a big guy - 6'3 but he'll always be my baby. 😘

Crater Lake is part of the Cascade Mountain range -from southern British Columbia through Washington State, Oregon and Far Northern California.

They both had a great time and explored the Lake of the Woods area. Oregon is a lovely state that we used to visit often. They didn't make it to Coos Bay - too busy lake fishing and the fish were biting.

The Angler’s Prayer  🎣

To waters deep, my heart I send,
Guide my cast, my faithful friend.
With every nibble, patience taught,
In nature’s lessons, peace is sought.

May I respect the life I seek,
With gentle hands, my spirit speak.
In every catch, a bond I find,
In fishing’s grace, my heart unwind.

  4. Such a beautiful area and the deep blue lake is stunning. A very deep lake! Hopefully there will be a time when you all can make a trip back there to see it. Debby, your son is a very handsome man and the blue shirt he has on makes the lake look that much more blue.

  7. Wow, what a beautiful place.
Visiting from Shug's blog. I read your comment on her post about the Texas heat. I've never actually known anyone who fried an egg on the sidewalk, although I've heard the expression of it being hot enough to do so many times. And I was so impressed to read you had baked cookies in your van. That I have never heard of, LOL.

    1. Welcome. Yes my sons liked to do that and one summer we made the tube cookies and placed them in the van after seeing our local news do it. It worked! Took a little longer but we had cookies!!!
      Thanks for stopping by. 🌹

  10. Beautiful! MANY years ago when my family lived in Southern California, my father (a pilot) rented a 4-seater airplane to fly our family of 4 to the Portland area to visit my grandparents. I was in about the 4th grade at the time. Daddy had us look out the windows when we flew over Crater Lake. I remember the island and thinking how scary it looked with no beaches around the outer edge of the lake. That's a REALLY DEEP lake!!!

    1. Wow I bet that was something. How cool to be able to view a volcano from the air! I agree with you, it’s not like a real lake. I don’t even know if there are any swimming beaches there. I’ll have to check.
I hope all is well with you, Barbara.

  16. The first time I got to see Crater Lake was back in the early 1970's when we were camping in Oregon. We had to be camping at either Odell or Davis lake and took a drive over to Crater. The second time was about 8 or 9 years ago when Jim and I were vacationing in Oregon. It was June and there was still a lot of snow on the ground. It was a cold and kind of overcast day but we could still see the lake.

  18. Hi, after reading your comment about my won ton soup I thought I would get right back to you. My left over veggies were an half bag of mixed stir fry veggies so it had mini corn cobs, water chestnuts, carrots, broccolli. Italian green bean and a few other things that I don't remember...maybe onions? the pork was a leftover barbecued pork chop thinly sliced and I had Kraft brand (because it was the least expensive for another dish I had been making) Sweet & Spicy Barbecue Sauce. Hubby isn't into Spicy at all so I just gave the soup a tiny dollop just to brighten the flavors. This was all by the seat of my pants. The ingredients are all good so it may not be quite the same next time. HaHa...

  20. Such a beautiful location. It's wonderful that the lake holds such significance for you and that you were able to repeat the trip as a family of four. We have visited only once and there was a forest fire near by so not only could we not properly see the lake, we were also advised to not spend too much time outdoors because of the poor air quality.

  21. Crater Lake is a good place to visit. It has been years since we've been there but good memories x2!! I may have to gone to it with when I was still in high school last century. My parents would have taken me there with my younger bro and sister. I like the photos that you shared. When snow arrives, the view looks different and beautiful, even though miss what you want to see. I remember when Phil, Justin and I went to Mt. St. Helens and go through the museum to understand it happened and see photos. It was so cloudy that we couldn't see the mountain. I hope to get another blogpost done soon as I am a bit behind. I like what you wrote near the end of this post. God bless you and family!!
