Stop and Smell the Roses
Before the hustle and bustle of the day began, I made sure to wake up early and savor the sweet scent of the roses blooming in my garden. In that serene moment, I allowed myself to reflect on life's wonders and offer my earliest thoughts to God.
The amount of things going on is overwhelming - dealing with fires, constant alerts, smoke, undergoing tests, and waiting for biopsy results. I'm feeling the pressure.
John 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
The noise of everyday life can be overwhelming, can't it? It seems like we're constantly bombarded with messages and distractions everywhere we turn. Even in the most serene moments, there's always something vying for our attention. It's hard to escape the constant barrage of information, whether in the form of commercials, emails, social media or even just the hectic pace of everyday life.
In the midst of all this chaos, it's important to take a moment to appreciate the little things. Why can't people just slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of life?
Stop and Smell the Roses. (if you're not allergic)
Philippians 4:6-7: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
For some of us, it is a matter of making deliberated choices to stop and smell the roses. In the midst of the busyness and noise of everyday life, I've heard that some women have to intentionally set aside specific appointment times for prayer in order to connect with God without distractions.
Hey, whatever works.
1 Peter 5:6-7: Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Taking a moment to pause and appreciate the beauty of life can be symbolized by stopping and smelling the roses. It's about allowing yourself the time to engage in activities like writing a heartfelt poem, carefully handwriting a meaningful passage from the Bible on your most elegant stationery, and simply taking a moment to ponder and reflect. Devote to actually studying a book of the Bible. Even if singing isn't your thing, it's about embracing the joy of singing, as Psalms 100:1 encourages us to "make a joyful noise to the Lord," regardless of our singing abilities. If at all possible, get deep into nature - that always works for me.
When I start feeling anxious about things that are beyond my control, like wildfires or medical tests, I find it helpful to remind myself that there's so much more to life than the external stressors we often get caught up in.
John 14:27: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Today is a much better day for me. I think I was really anxious because I had to undergo an upper GI endoscopy, and I wasn't emotionally prepared for it. After the procedure, I was still recovering from the anesthesia - I even mistakenly said I took ibuprofen instead of Tylenol. I was still feeling mentally fuzzy and allowed myself to get worked up. Fortunately, my daughter-in-law, who is a nurse, reassured me and made me feel better. However, I realized that I needed to turn to my Abba for His support, so I did that this morning and now I feel relieved and refreshed.
I'm still feeling exhausted and finding it difficult to eat. The loss of my appetite is frustrating and I'm looking forward to its return! My throat doesn't hurt anymore, but I do have a hoarse voice. You could even call me Froggy at this point!
Have a Great Day and Take Care,
Froggy 🐸
I'm glad you are doing better today.
ReplyDeleteThere is so much going on in the world, the country and in our lives. I really appreciate your post today.
So miss my roses. Too many snakes here and they love the thorns as it helps shed their skin. I know and thats why I had to remove them. Glad you are doing better today. Janice
ReplyDeleteI never knew that. Yeah, I wouldn't have roses if they attracted snakes.
DeleteIt is good to stop and smell the roses unless there is a bee in them, then maybe not so good, it might sting your nose and that would be painful and we don't like painful, just saying
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, and not if you're allergic too.
DeleteI too am glad you are doing better! :)
ReplyDeleteA beautiful pink rose.
I am too!
DeleteI' so sorry, and hope your healing will be speedy! I have had a couple endoscopies, but never had any side effects from them. I can't imagine how you must feel! Your roses are gorgeous!!! The last one is almost luminescent! You really have a green thumb. And you are so right, the bible tells us to be still, and realize God. And smelling the roses is a great way to do that.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'll live. I don't like these types of tests, and I realize they are necessary, but that still doesn't make me like them any better.
DeleteI don't do anything to the roses, actually. We just water them or spray them with a soapy mixture to get rid of the aphids. Other than that, we just plant them in the clay soil ground, and they grow. lol
I, for one, really needed this reminder here today, Debby, to stop and smell the roses. Our world and its demands can get overwhelming quickly, and we need to slow ourselves and ask our Father to embrace us and comfort us when we feel overwhelmed. Praying for your healing and appetite returning, my friend.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
I forgot to say, I don't know how you are functioning as well as you are while under the constant threat of fire.. I don't think I would do as well as you do
DeleteThis summer, I've been struggling to cope with the numerous fires happening, and some have been uncomfortably close to home. I feel like God has been by my side throughout, but there are moments when I forget to rely on His help. I need to remind myself to focus on God and not the fires.
Deleteso glad you are feeling better and hope that frog leaves your throat soon. if I ever lose my appetite, bob should just call the undertaker. ha ha.. hope the apetitie comes back soon and happy to hear you are finding ways to smell the roses and comfort your self.
ReplyDeleteway back in 2000, I was in a horrible rollover SUV wreck, landed upside down hanging on my seat belt, the EMT's put me in the back of the ambulance and said we need to get your BP down before we transport, she said I will be right back. I had time to say this verse, Fear not, be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will comfort you and I will life you up by my righteous right arm., 3 times. she came back and said your BP is normal, what did you do. I told her and she looked shocked.
That is incredible. That's why memorizing scripture is good and just for those times, so we can be comforted by God's words.
DeleteI'm so sorry you had to go through all of this, Debby. I hope all turns out well for you. Those fires really frighten me as well. Oh, that red rose! And the Pink one! As I remember, your dad planted those in your garden? I like the John 16 verse, and it's one of my favorites. And the Peter verse is very special too, and really spoke to my heart. Yes, getting out there and smelling the roses or just watering the plants and spending time in nature does a world of good. Sometimes when we do, we get a new perspective on things, and we come back refreshed and ready to go.
ReplyDeleteHave a good August week. It seems to be getting cooler here.
~Sheri
Yes, my dad did plant them. The ones in the backyard we spilled and planted that new plant in the backyard - so it came off the original one my dad planted. Very special.
DeleteI hadn't realized you were having an endoscope too. Thought it was just an colonoscopy. Hope the results will be good and no further work will be needed. Praying..Praying for all of the stress from fires, health and getting ready for your role in BSF. Lots on your plate, but Our God is Bigger than Any of That!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen this is all more at peace and you have continued to smell the roses...think of what an awesome testimony you will have...
Sue
I hadn't realized it either until the day of the test! I questioned them, and they checked the chart, and indeed, my doctor had ordered that for me. IT through me off - and I allowed it to unnerve me. I just wasn't mentally prepared for it.
DeleteI sure needed this message today. Oh wow! My week has been filled with sickness, as well as non stop hustle bustle. It is pretty bad when you don't feel well, but yet you still have deadlines to meet. Thank you so much Debby for this wonderful post and reminder that I need to first of all, slow down. I need to take care of myself, and I need to be absorbed in the messages that God has for me. I love the beauty of all of these gorgeous roses and I also am enjoying your new place. Prayers for you my friend, that the peace of all understanding will guard your heart. Peace, Peace, wonderful Peace, coming down from the Father above....sweep over YOUR spirit forever I pray in fathomless billows of love.
ReplyDeleteI'm really sorry to hear that you've been unwell. I'm truly glad that the post was able to bring you some comfort! It's all too common for us to become engulfed in the hectic nature of our lives, leaving little opportunity for contemplation and tranquility. Honestly, this is a message that I find myself needing to be reminded of on a daily basis!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Hymn - thanks for that!
The first part of this post is exactly how I have been feeling. Spot on. I don't turn on the news in the morning for a reason, unless there is very bad weather. I like to enjoy peace, nature and embrace the space. My cell phone automatically gives me news updates when I have never signed up for them, and it was very annoying yesterday. I tried to sit a bit and enjoy my flowers on the porch, and every minute I turned around there was something needing done or dealt with. I just needed a break. I sure hope you are doing better now. All those tests can cause a lot of anxiety for sure.
