A Brown Hodgepodge

Come on, you know, you want to do it...

1. What was your favorite part about growing up in your hometown?

1960s - During my time living in the City, my friends and I would ring the door buzzers of the apartment buildings, a mischievous pastime akin to knocking on doors and dashing away before anyone could catch us. We found joy in the little things—like the thrill of spitting on streetcars as they rumbled in and out of the dark tunnels, cashing in our bottles at the corner Mom and Pop for candy.

Sitting on the front stoop, we would observe the eclectic parade of interesting characters that drifted by, each with their own story etched into their faces. I lived in the Haight Ashbury in San Francisco.  Among them was the infamous "Spit Lady," a tough-looking woman with a penchant for chewing tobacco, whose aim was surprisingly accurate. There was one memorable occasion when her aim almost sent a stream of tobacco juice splattering onto my mom

When we relocated 20 miles south on the coast, the beach quickly became the center of my world (along with boys who surfed)   I experienced my first kiss at the beach! 🥰

2. Do you prefer 'material' gifts or 'experience' gifts? If you answered experience, tell us about one you've received and truly enjoyed.

The gift of eternal life that God wrapped up for me 40 years ago -  I could have never imagined the experiences that would follow. It was never easy, but I was always hopeful, always grateful and a gift so precious I thought I’d surely lose it - Romans 11:29 says, “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”

God’s gift of eternal life is permanent and cannot be taken away, lost, or forfeited.

Oh what a gift we have in Jesus!  🎁

3. Is brown a color featured prominently in your home decor? Your wardrobe? What's a favorite brown thing you own? Of the brown foods listed here which one is your favorite and/or most often consumed... brown sugar, brown rice, pretzels, coffee, dates, cloves, German chocolate cake, whole wheat bread?

I have beautiful real wood floors that showcase a rich, warm brown hue.

The first food that came to my mind was a pot roast I savored just last week. Its flavors are still vivid in my memory, and I can almost recall the aroma that filled the house while it cooked in the oven.  I love the rich, savory flavor of brown beef gravy that came from my pot roast; it's the perfect complement to the tender meat. I have a passion for the deep, indulgent notes of dark chocolate that melt in my mouth. Nuts play a delightful role in my preferences as well— Pinto beans provide a comforting flavor, and I love the natural sweetness of raisins. Lastly, the bold aroma and robust taste of my freshly brewed morning coffee - make for a pleasant way to start my day!

Sorry, I made my own list!

4. Which 'Charlie Brown' character do you relate to most? If you're not sure, you can take a fun quick quiz by clicking here-Which Charlie Brown Character Are You?  or the one found here-Charlie Brown Quiz. I got the same answer on both.

I am an introvert. I can 100% relate.

5. What's a favorite item you've purchased this year?

Nothing stands out to me.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Where art thou, random thought? I sense your presence, tucked away in the shadows of my psyche, eagerly waiting for the right moment to break free and unveil your true essence. In this moment of reflection, I choose to embrace my thoughts with reverence, believing that they will eventually find their voice when the time is ripe—perhaps the next Hodgepodge. One never knows.  I sure don’t.

  1. I'm not surprised you still remember the spit lady!
The gift of eternal life is certainly the best.
I like your list of brown foods better than the suggested ones.
    I got Marcie too.

    1. The Spit Lady was an older woman, and she looked like Miss Almira Gulch / the Wicked witch of the west in the Wizard of Oz. She was scary and us kids did wonder if she was a witch!

  2. Wow - the spit lady -- what a memory!! She definitely sounds like a character!! I like your list of brown foods - great idea to make your own. I like Pinto Beans, too, but my husband is not so fond of them.

    1. Oh she was a character! She walked fast and looked like the Wicked Witch of the West.
Love pinto beans. In fact, I just might make a “mess of beans” as my Tennessee Grandma would say! 🥰

  3. Such a fascinating childhood you had, Debby! And yes, Jesus is, and always will be, the best gift we have ever been given. Let us thank our Father for sending His precious Son to suffer in our place. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

  4. I was about to say I don't like brown and there is no brown in my house, but after reading your list of browns, I find I do like brown.. since a hamburger and fries is my most favorite of all foods, that is shades of brown.. and my dog is brown brindle, and I love him.
I don't have a favorite Charlie Brown character but I do have his Christmas tree and I do love Eyeore as my favorite from Pooh.

    1. I enjoy a good hamburger! I like brindle dogs. I also have a Charlie Brown tree but it’s on its last twig. I’ve had it since my boys were teens and so that’s been a few decades as the youngest is now 40!

  6. You reminded me of how we liked to make prank phone calls to people back in the day. You certainly can't do that now lol. Hope you have a great day!

    1. Oh my, I actually got into trouble doing that and my parents were called. That was in the 6th grade! No, you can’t do that now! 😉

  7. Oh, what polar opposites our hometowns! Nestled in the southernmost Rocky Mountains and boasting a population of maybe 12,000, Los Alamos was once referred to as a "Secret City." No wonder we kids felt overly protected - under the thumbs not only of our parents, but the government.
I'm so touched by your mention of the BEST gift, and you had me at pot roast!

  8. That sounds interesting- I had no idea. Well I was a city kid for that time until we moved down the coast. I prefer the city but I can understand why my folks moved. Things were changing in our neighborhood and it was just before it really started getting bad. As a child, I saw men dressed as women and thought nothing of it. There was a lesbian bar on the corner - just regular city life you get accustomed to. It still was fun and in my own way, I felt safe.

  9. You reminded me of the joy of finding pop bottles at Newport Beach and taking them to the little store on the promenade to cash them in and buy a candy or ice cream! I love your gift answer...truly the best gift ever. We would visit friends who lived right in San Francisco and that was always interesting. Beach living is something special. Your brown answer is making me nod my head and making my stomach growl! Happy Hodgepodge to you.

  10. I sure can relate to Charlie Brown! Brown is my least favorite color. We had a brown car once, only because it was a really good deal.

  11. Yes, salvation is the best gift of all!!
I grew up in a small town in NJ. Lived on the edge of a woods and a lake. So many happy days playing there!!

  12. Such interesting word pictures you have given us today...Yikes! The Spit Lady, and living in the Haight Ashbury district, etc. That certainly had to be educational and entertaining. Glad you escaped it and exchanged it for the beach and surfers. Much better kind of neighborhood. I'm thinking "the Beach Boys" music... Oh that pot roast sure sounds delicious. You got me drooling on that one. I do love a good pot roast, but pot roast isn't the cheap meal it used to be and so we rarely every have one anymore...that plus hubby has trouble chewing beef like that no matter how tender. I guess we are at an age where we need to get our teeth sharpened. LOL. And oh yes, "what a friend we have in Jesus...all our sins and griefs to bear...what a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer..." Amen, Jesus Christ, and our Salvation, the greatest gift EVER!! Amen.

    1. I use a chuck roast which is still a good price. It cost $19 at the butchers and we had 4 meals! That was about $4.75 a meal. Use chuck roast! It’s cheaper than ground beef.

Oh that’s so funny about sharpening our teeth. 🤣

  14. Hi Debby, your spit lady story was fun. My cousin and I were in SF in 2018. We took the Bart in from Walnut Creek. We walked 12 miles that day. I remember hearing about Haight Ashbury in the late 60's. Your food sounded so good. My husband makes a good pot of beans. I used to do most of the cooking. Once he retired, he took over. I do want to make a pot roast this winter. The way my mom showed me by browning it in a cast iron pan first. You were lucky to live by the beach. I hope you don't get too much rain. We sure need it here in So CA.

I know a lady who chews tobacco, when we would visit her, my boys eyes would just get huge in AWE of her. Ha Ha!
She has a heart of gold. And is a HUGE supporter of the military and was to our Sam when he was deployed to Africa last year.
