A Walk Around the Yard
*scrub oak
Yesterday it started off wet and rainy. It was awesome!
By the afternoon, it had cleared, and the sunshine was back.
Decided to take a walk around the yards.
How many do you see?
There is more than one in the photo.
All total, we have six goldfish. They are such gentle little creatures that recognize us (the hand that feeds them) and will eat from my husband's hand.
My husband named them:
Boomer
Shy
Spot
Calico
Goldie
Fast Attack
Don't ask me which fish is which...my husband knows.
Remember this California Redbud in October?
This was it, yesterday.
I stuck in a little metal stake the dollar tree. The corn, I've had for a couple of years.
The plant is a dusty miller - apparently in some areas of the US it is grown as a annual.
Here, it grows year-round. I've always liked tucking them among darker green plants and flowers for added contrast. They do need to be cut back before it gets colder.
Here in the front yard is the Sweet Gum. There is still less color in my yard than the rest of the neighborhood. The conifers shade them from the full sun's effects.
We have just begun our rainy season here in Northern California. Everyone loves this time of year because it's much cooler, and the air smells sweet as everything starts to green up after the long, hot, dry summers. Plus, it doesn't rain all the time, although there have been times when it felt like it did!
Yesterday, I made a vegetable beef soup using the leftover pot roast. I was able to create four meals from that roast. I used the remaining beef and saved all the juices to add to my broth. It turned out tasty! I enjoy this season because it allows me to make soups and casseroles that we typically don't eat during the summer months.
It is time for me to step down from my service position at my 12-step meeting, and today I will be passing the torch to another member. I'm glad I took that step and volunteered.
Well, that's it for me on this Tuesday. I hope you all are enjoying this day. I do want to thank you to all who leave comments. I really enjoy reading them.
Tomorrow is the Hodgepodge!
See you then -
Debby

I so enjoyed this tour of your yard, Debby. And I think it's so cute that your husband chose names for all your goldfish in the yard pond. It's not quite cool enough here for us to be looking at fall/winter comfort foods, but the day is coming! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteWe’ve had many fish throughout the years and he gives each one their special name. It’s sweet
DeleteI did the Leader at TOPS meetings for 3 years, the woman before me did it for 6, we had 30 members in winter and 13 in summer and no one would take the position. I wanted out and felt bad, and then we shut down March of 2020 for a year and I never went back. the first year was fun, then it became work. I was the assistant to the leader of Overcomers meetings at our church for several years. People with addictions, and I really was happy to do that. My job was getting people to talk, because I talk a lot. ha ha
ReplyDeletealso type a lot. love that dark leaf and the sad tree with no leaves. we need rain and hope some of yours comes out way but only if it doesn't come on the back of a hurricane
Well thank you for your service! Sometimes within the walls of recovery groups the workers are few! But I have no regrets. It was good for me. My Al-Anon sponsor was in Overcomer's. She liked it and it worked for her!
DeleteDon't all goldfish look the same, the do to me, I liked these photos a walk around my yard would take 30 seconds just saying, would only take longer if I was out the back and fell over which is likely but not fun
ReplyDeleteNo. We always pick out the different ones instead of all gold. The come in white, orange, yellow and black and some are calico.
DeleteYes dusty miller is an annual here in Michigan. We cannot have any fish if we had a pond. My neighbor built a lovely pond and added fish. The next morning a heron came in and ate them all. She watched in disbelief. Janice
ReplyDeleteWe had a heron wipe out our fish once. It was heartbreaking. Then a few months later the lone fish showed itself; no doubt traumatized. So we bought 5 little feeder fish and he’s been happy with new friends. We live less than a mile from a bird sanctuary and that is always a concern.
DeleteYou have a wonderful yard, so full of variety! and wow, I have never seen a black leaf! the yellow redbud is gorgeous! Does the goldfish water ever freeze over?
ReplyDeleteWe don’t have hard freezes here and the couple of times we got a rare snow, they go deep and slow down their metabolism - hibernate. We’ve never lost a fish due to the weather.
DeleteNice walking around your yard with you. I saw one whole fish and parts of I think 3. I like that your husband named the fish!! :)
ReplyDeleteCorrect! There were three fish!
DeleteDusty Miller is an annual here as well. I love the silvery colour of the leaves. Your goldfish are getting very large.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
About the size of my hand.
DeleteMost of the leaves have fallen from our trees (except for the oaks, who hold onto the brown leaves until new ones bud out in the spring).
ReplyDeleteSome oaks shed their leaves and we gave others that don’t
DeleteWhat a pleasant walk around the yard you had, Debby. Sometimes we see interesting things in our own front yards. Wow, there really is a change in the redbud tree from October to November. The sweet gum tree is pretty, and still has some Fall color. We are getting rain here too, and it's supposed to rain tomorrow and Thursday. Your vegetable beef soup sounds delicious, and perfect for these cold days we're having.
ReplyDeleteHave a good rest of the week, Debby.

Soup is perfect for a rainy day in the fall. We had garlic bread too!
DeleteI enjoyed your walk around the yard. Your veggie soup sounds really good. I need to cook a roast soon. I cook more when the weather is cooler. We will see how my hand heals. We sure need rain so if you get some, send it down here!
ReplyDeleteOkay I’ll talk to the weather guy! Lol
DeleteThat is an interesting photo with the goldfish. Enjoyed all of your photos. Have a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteYou too Debby
DeleteHi Debby, Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog. I tried to follow on but it won't let me sign up for some reason. I don't think it is on my end because I followed a couple of other blogs today without issue. Anyway- lovely post-funny about the named fish. I always plant dusty miller in my window boxes in the spring. Just now removed them as we had a heavy frost. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know that. I had no idea. Thanks for dropping by and at least trying!
