The Day Before Thanksgiving Hodgepodge
1. Talking turkey...are you cooking the turkey this year? Does ham belong on a Thanksgiving day menu? When it comes to gravy do you pour it over your whole plate, skip it altogether, or land somewhere in between? Cranberries-homemade or jelled right out of the can? Do you look forward more to the main course, the savory sides, or the desserts?
I’m cooking this year.
I love good homemade turkey gravy - however, no giblet gravy for me.
I’m somewhere in between regarding gravy placement.
I always used to make two different kinds of cranberries—homemade and one can of the jelled stuff because that is what my boys liked best. Now I've given up—my sons still prefer the jelled stuff, and I don’t eat it that much anymore. I failed as a mother! LOL 😏
I used to enjoy it all - but now my favorites are simple. Mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing.
2. Holiday movies...tell us your favorite and what it is about the film that makes you love it. Is it the film itself or a memory it stirs?
Miracle on 34th Street and It's a Wonderful Life.
I have fond memories of my mom introducing me to the movies she loved as a child. She couldn't wait for us to see "It's a Wonderful Life," which was made in 1946 when she was just 12 years old. She was also 11 when "Miracle on 34th Street" came out.
By the time I watched "Miracle on 34th Street" for the first time—probably around the same age she was when she first saw it—I recognized Natalie Wood. At that point, I was star-struck kid and knew all about the older Natalie Wood.
3. A favorite way to give back and help others?
I often feel that I don't do enough to genuinely help others during the holidays, and it makes me feel ashamed. While we participate in the Samaritan's Purse Christmas Box through the church, donate to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots, and contribute to the local Stuff the Bus campaign by bringing canned goods, these efforts feel too indirect. They don’t fulfill my desire to actively serve those who are less fortunate. I would love to volunteer at the local shelter, but when I checked, they already have their volunteers in place, and it’s nearly too late for Christmas.
Every year, I make Latkes using the recipe my friend Margie gave me (we used to fry them side by side at my stove for years), and I bring her a plate of latkes at the Care facility where she lives now. The smile she gives me is worth everything!
4. Name a place or setting you encountered this month that made you feel grateful.
I’m grateful for my church, the Bible studies I attend. I’m grateful I still live in a country where I can read and study the Bible and worship freely.
5. Knowing what you know today, if you could redo yesterday what would you do differently?
I'm sure I wasted my time on something insignificant yesterday - just can't remember what it was.
6. Spill your own random thought here.
I find myself a bit weepy during Thanksgiving, as I am sure many of you are, too. That missing chair at the table - gets me every year.

my list of things I would redo is to long to type here. My favorite Christmas movie is the same as yours. I love both the Miracle on 34th Street, the original and the remake but if give a choice would watch the old one. its just the two of us and had planned to go out
ReplyDeleteuntil I woke up today and thought all those sick people from the Norht are here and I don't want to get in a crowd of them and get sick. which means I will cook something, but not a full traditional dinner. I am going to Publix and get rotisserie chicken if they have it, if not will get a pork roast for the crockpot.. I love turkey but only if someone else cooks it. last but not least, a place I went that made me feel grateful, was Publix yesterday to pick up RX for Bob. Florida is 60 percent seniors and I noticed while I bounced through the door with my normal fast walk, there were half a dozen seniors who could barely walk, hanging on to baskets, riding in carts, one man was asleep in his cart with the basket full of bagged groceries. As I stood in line at the pharmacy I started to list things I was grateful for, that I can still walk and shop and drive and take care of my husband and our sweet dog. that God has allowed me to live 80 years and that I am able to help others.
That is a lot to be thankful for! When we look around, there are so many people hurting - one way or another.
DeleteI had no idea Florida had that many seniors! I had to look up how many seniors California has - 6 million which is 15% of the population! My goodness what a contrast.
Stay well, my friend. Enjoy your Thanksgiving whatever way you like it. The main theme is thankfulness; not so much food!
I so understand about the missing chair...my son's going home anniversary is coming up...well...you get what I am saying. Wishing you a beautiful Thanksgiving my friends.
ReplyDeleteYeah unfortunately I do get it! For whatever reason, I am really missing him this year.
DeleteI wish you and your husband a blessed Thanksgiving.
Good answers....Talking Turkey...I do not like turkey. Fried, baked, sliced sandwich turkey...I just don't like it. I prefer Ham. Both of the movies you mentioned are very good Christmas movies...even though I did not watch them until just a few years ago. There are so many needs, especially this time of the year. we try to help families in our area that we know are really struggling. Sam also enjoys giving big tips to those who serve us at restaurants during the Holiday season. I have never eaten Latkes! I know yours are so delicious though. So thankful for SOOOO many things. Happy Wednesday Debby! 🧡
ReplyDeleteLast year we gave a very big tip to the cook at a diner. It was Christmas Day and we deliberately took money out of the bank. Found this retro dinner off the interstate and we watched and prayed as to who God wanted us to gift to. It was the cook! We called him out if the kitchen! He had a family, children. It truly blessed us. To me, that’s Christmas!
DeleteMy daughter is doing the turkey, I'm doing sides and a pie. Gravy only on the potatoes. :)
ReplyDeleteWe like It's a Wonderful Life too.
Yes, the empty chair at Thanksgiving is what gets me too.
Some years it doesn’t bother me as much as it is, this year. I don’t like it.
DeleteI've never seen either of those holiday movies ... isn't that pathetic? So grateful for the abundant blessings God's afforded me ... and YES to that empty chair at the table.
ReplyDeletelol - yes pathetic and unamerican! 😂
DeleteYes we all have been so blessed - just getting out of bed every morning is a blessing. I’m hoping you have a wonderful day on Thanksgiving.
Oh yes, Debby, I understand what you are saying, I miss that chair at the table too.
ReplyDeleteSending a hug.
I like how you answered #4.
#5... yep, I probably did waste some time too... scrolling. Grrrr. I am trying to get better at that.
Happy Thanksgiving!! Carla
One day all the chairs will be gone! 😢
DeleteMy routine is thrown off so I know I wasted time! Oh well.!
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🍽
I'm with you, Debby, when it comes to getting teary about family that is no longer with us and for those who can't make it to our home due to work. But, for the first time ever, we are going to be eating out for Thanksgiving - no dishes or mess to clean up. That makes me happy! Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteEating out is awesome. We did that on Christmas one year when my son was deployed and my other son had passed away - so we took our middle son and we had a wonderful dinner at a very nice restaurant in San Francisco. I don’t think I could afford it now. Good memory though and that’s what counts!
DeleteEnjoy your dinner out and Happy Thanksgiving!🦃
Enjoyed reading your comments. Yes most of us do have an empty chair at our Thanksgiving dinner. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Janice
ReplyDeleteThanks Janice. The same to you!
DeleteI do think bringing homemade lattkes to your friend is an act of help and kindness. I feel emotional around the holidays too. It's the memory, the expectation, the awareness of the passing of time and missing the ones we love who aren't at the table. Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving with those you love.
ReplyDeleteYes, you’re right. That awareness of the passing of the years - seems so unsurmountable. This TG is more this year. Don’t know what triggered it. Oh well. Onward and Upward!
DeleteThank you Janice - Have a blessed day tomorrow.
I love your responses to the hodgepodge. Thats pretty much how I feel too.
ReplyDelete1. We are going to my sons for Thanksgiving this year. Steve is cooking a small turkey breast and a ham. There will only be 6 of us. Steve and Sigrid, Dave and I and Lynne and Karen..hopefully Lynne will be ok and Karen will be able to get her to the house. Granddaughters are at their husbands families. Always have to trade off between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
We always bring the sides and the food is always so tasty. Love homemade cranberry sauce and stuffing too. I guess I love all the traditional foods of the holiday.
2. I do enjoy all the holiday movies too and its probably the memories that get stirred.
3. We do mostly donations now but for many years passed we served dinner with Salvation Army, Organized and helped lead the military boxes filling, worked at the Placer Food Bank, and helped volunteer at the local "kids Club" for their annual Christmas party. It was for underprivileged kids. Can't do it this year due to too much illness in our family. I feel the same way as you..unfulfilled by not serving anywhere this year.
4. Our neighbors coming to our rescue and helping us. Also feeling grateful that Dave's Dr. was on the ball and ordered more meds for his getting hit by diverticulitis again. This is getting to be so hard. Praying he will feel better asap.
5.I didn't feel very "worky" yesterday..so much loss of sleep dealing with Dave.
This morning he feels a bit better as the first round of meds takes effect.
6,Grateful for my wonderful family and those who are my friends through thick and thin.
Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving and blessed holiday time.
Sue
The past two years, my daughter-in-law has cooked and I’m giving her a break. All too soon, I won’t be able.
DeleteI’m so sorry Dave’s been ill. I sincerely hope the medication will get him on the road to recovery. Caretaking is hard work - and especially hard when it is a loved one. Enjoy your day tomorrow! Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
What wonderful movie memories you have. Margie truly has a good friend and I'm glad you can put that smile on her face. Holidays have a way of pressing in those memories of loved ones who are no longer with us. We invited my cousin and her son to Thanksgiving. Her husband died in September and she is having such a hard time with grief and depression. So hard. I'm with you on cranberry sauce. I tried with the homemade variety and when the whole bowl was hardly touched I decided to go back to the canned variety!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you have a wonderful Thanksgiving tradition going! The balance between homemade and the canned cranberry sauce is a fun reminder of how family preferences shape the holiday meals. I love that you still make the effort for your sons’ preferences, even if they’re a little set in their ways. As for the turkey and sides—mashed potatoes, gravy, and stuffing truly are timeless favorites. Wishing you a joyful and delicious Thanksgiving!

Nice reading all your answers.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving
My favourite Thanksgiving meal items are the stuffing, just a bit of the turkey, the mashed potatoes and of course the gravy. I also like the tossed salad I usually make.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
It does not matter how long it has been empty, but that empty chair always makes the holiday dinner "hard." I'm grateful for Heaven....and for this country where we can read our Bible and go to Bible studies. Great answer! Have a nice day tomorrow!! Happy Thanksgiving -
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving day, Debby. I hope it's a pleasant day for all.
ReplyDelete~Sheri
You definitely have a busy day ahead. Yes, two of my favorite movies that I must watch before Christmas. Your church is a beautiful blessing for you. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteI suspect I'll be a bit weepy at various times today and through the weekend, as we are on our own for Thanksgiving for the first time. I got a bit sniffly at work yesterday thinking about it. God has been so good to us, so I won't let it get me down - will instead try to look forward to being together with everyone at Christmas. Happy Thanksgiving!
