Four Score and a Hodgepodge

From this Side of the Pond

1. What's a winter memory you treasure (can be from any winter in your lifetime)?

I don’t really keep my favorite memories sorted by season or anything. I just live in the moment and enjoy them as they come.

2. Tell us about the last time or a recent time you were caught up in red tape. Does it send your frustration level off the charts or is it something you've come to expect when dealing with any sort of bureaucracy?

My eldest son, Michael, was born in 1977 with a rare bone dysplasia, leading to severe dwarfism and no  formal diagnosis. Medical professionals were unsure if he had a rare condition that had not yet been discovered or was just a new mutation. This made it difficult to access necessary government services. They want a diagnosis. We had Kaiser, for his basic medical needs but Kaiser was ill equipped to handle his physical and orthopedic needs - They referred us to Stanford and UCSF.  Our income was just above the threshold, preventing Michael from qualifying for state and county support, and limited government services or tax credits.

Shriners Hospital, helped out with special leg braces and a walker for his size, made especially for him - free of charge.  When Michael enrolled at California State University, Long Beach, he applied for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Still, after being approved, he had to repay benefits due to his student loans being classified as income. He needed to get a job, which was not easy, but he was hired by the Long Beach Campus police for fingerprinting (he had to stand on a stool). I truly believe the financial strain and stress from all the BS contributed to the heart attack he suffered at 25, which tragically led to his death.

3. Do you eat/like fish?

I’m not big on seafood.

Do you cook fish at home?

No, occasionally salmon for my husband

What's your favorite fish dish?

I enjoy good fish and chips -

 Ever been ice fishing?

Nope, on the ice fishing, although a few years ago, I did walk out onto a frozen Castle Lake and saw a lot of ice fishing, which was a first for me.

4. Did you watch any of the US President's Inauguration coverage on Monday, Jan 20?

Yes, and I especially enjoyed Pastor Lorenzo Sewell's spirit-filled prayer. Wow

On a scale of 1-10 (with 1 being not at all and 10 being very very) how interested are you in politics in general?

I love my country and am interested in it. I feel it is my duty to be informed when I vote. My husband and I call and let our representatives know when we have an opinion on a bill before it becomes law. Here in Shasta County, we know our representatives.

Do you follow/keep up with/ get involved with local politics?

Local politics plays a crucial role in community development and governance. Many California politicians began their careers at the local level.  Engaging in local council meetings and county supervisor meetings is essential for residents to voice their concerns and influence decision-making.

For instance, after many years of advocating for improvements to a narrow bridge in my area,  I reached out to a city council member to highlight the safety risks, particularly for seniors and children. Although it took a decade of persistent effort, the local government has recently approved the construction of a new bridge, which will enhance safety and accessibility for all residents. This example underscores the importance of local activism in effecting change.

I prefer local politics much more because they live here. It hard for them to hide from their constituents!

5. What's the coziest thing you own, and what makes it so?

I have no idea.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Thanks for stopping by - see you next week.

  1. Debby...thank you for sharing about your son. I am sorry for your loss of him and for all of the issues that you all had to go through. I can only imagine the frustration level that you all experienced. The photos of the snow on the mountains and around are so very pretty. Isn't it amazing how this white fluffy stuff brings such smiles to those of us who do not have to be out in it. It truly is beautiful. We have lived in this little town for 52 years and i have never seen such confusion with our city politics. Absolutely ridiculous. I am not a big fish eater....but I do enjoy a nice blackened fish now and then. Hoping your day is filled with all kinds of sweet Blessings.

    1. Our local politics can get crazy here too! Especially since we have a small group of woke agitators who come to the meetings and start trouble.

Those years after Michael was born were stressful but what kept me going was the innocence of a little baby boy that needed me to not only be his mom, but his advocate!

  2. I'm so sorry you and Michael had to go through all that and for the loss of him at such a young age.
There's lots of ice fishing going on in our area right now!
I'm not a fish lover, my husband enjoys it though.
I watched the inauguration and also enjoyed that prayer. I liked Franklin Grahams prayer too.

  3. Thank you Debby for giving us the link to the prayer. I got chills listening to it.
I pray that this will be the beginning of Freedom for all of us. Praying for our CA. politics. I pray for those like Kevin Kiely who are going against the grain of Newsome a.
Thank you for sharing about your son too. Oh the frustration and heartache. Red Tape and ignorance ... terribly sad and disgusting. (((hugs)))

  4. I'm at a loss to think of any meaningful expression regarding Michael's loss. Thank you for sharing -- both your frustration and pain. While these images are exquisite, just imagine what's in store for us in Heaven!
I, too, loved Pastor Sewell's delivery.

  5. This last quote is so thought provoking! I am so very sorry about your son! I cannot imagine what you have been through. But I know your strong faith has helped greatly.

  6. I am so sorry to hear about your son. My daughter was 32 when she passed away from a heart defect. My husband passed away one year before my daughter. He had colon cancer which spread to his liver. The hoops we had to jump through for testing were unbelievable; I mean who wants to take chemo and have all those tests!!
Your pictures of Castle Lake is beautiful.

  7. Pastor Sewell was fabulous as he quoted directly for MLK, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. We watched the entire inauguration and I'm thrilled for our nation once again under God and headed in a positive direction once again. This is a Golden Age and we're blessed to be living here in this moment. Blessings, Debby!

  11. Thank you for telling us about Michael's health issues. I know it was very hard for you. I agree with the local government. In my neighborhood we had a state senator who use to live here, and we always voiced our problems to him. He no longer is in the Senate but was nice to know he listened to us when he was. I taped the inauguration and have been watching it nightly when I can. I did see the pastor you mentioned and he was good. We are having a heat wave here now. It is 18 out there this morning. Yippee. 12. anything that has to do with govt is always a lot of red tape, and I know how hard it must have been dealing with all the red tape with your son. I am happy to hear that he was able to get employment and so sad to hear he died so young.
My winter memory is moving to FL in 1984 and spending Christmas day and New years day on a beach in bright sunshine. still love it, but that could not happy this year.

  13. I'm sorry for the loss of your son at such a young age. My brother died as an adult from the result of complications of a childhood disease. He was also under a lot of stress from the emotional upheaval that his childhood wrought on him and I always thought that figured into his early death. I like the quote in your random thought. How true is that and not something that most want to consider/think about. Congrats on being influential in getting a new bridge! What a great example of how getting involved makes an impact. Have a great day!

  15. Hi, I did not know the full story about the loss of your son, thank you for sharing today Debby. I think you are right, the stress added to more complications to his body.
Sending an extra hug and prayer.
I had to laugh about the local officials... "hard to hide from their constituents." That is so true too!!!
I started attending our local village board meetings, and I was SHOCKED they did not say the Pledge of Allegiance. I worked on having the Pledge said at the start of each meeting... it got done slowly, I could not believe the push back. Anyway, if I don't win in April, at least I got that done as a concerned citizen.

    1. Good for you! I’m proud of you. I get frustrated with so many who are complacent. Then something happens and they get their panties in a bunch - like what we’re seeing in SoCal. Elections have consequences! You can actually get more done at the grassroots level that will benefit everyone in the community. I hope you win.

  16. It sounds like you were a wonderful advocate for your son. Those threshold lines are hard to deal with when you really need assistance. Institutions like Shriners are a God send. So sorry for his and your suffering. We are in a small community, too, and a fellow from our church was elected to represent our county, the poorest county in Washington state. Hats off to you for making a difference in your community. Great photos of the lake!
