Friday's This and That
If we all lived nearby, I would share some lemons, oranges, and mandarins with you.
The corner of my dining room has a delightful scent.
Today is a lovely day; it's 61 degrees and sunny. Sitting in the sun feels quite pleasant, but once the sun sets behind the mountains to the west, it gets cold.
Earlier this week, Susie received her new scratching post and her very own plant. I’ve mentioned how she munches on both real and artificial plants, but this one is safe for her to eat.
Once it was assembled, she quickly went over to scratch at it and paw at the foliage. I think she likes it.
No, I know she likes it. I woke up in the middle of the night to her running down the hallway and back into the living room, using her Stephen King meow. When I came out this morning, I saw her toys scattered all over the room.
Silly Cat

Today, I ran out to the market to get just a few things. I'm doing well, just using what I already have on hand but I always need milk, eggs, and some produce.
Petaluma large eggs $10.96
I buy eggs every week, so I usually just open the refrigerator at the store and take them out. Today, an elderly woman asked me if I had checked the price. I hadn’t, and I was shocked by what I saw. Nevertheless, I bought them anyway. Laydee has an egg a day, and we eat the rest. Prices always rise in winter, and when you factor in the shortage, it leads to even higher costs.
I came home and put all the groceries away. Then, I noticed a package of cookie mix that I had recently won in a basket filled with various cake and cookie mixes, along with some baking utensils. I thought it would be a good idea to use them. The cookie mix was for macadamia nuts and white chips cookies.
To prevent overeating, I make the dough and bake only enough for the day.
I must say, they were very delicious.
On these sunny days, we see the garden come alive again - This mum I've had for years now - I cut it down, and it grows back.
I forgot to mention that my stepdaughter, Char finally got a job as a cashier at Walmart. She’s been there for about three weeks and is still in training. I really appreciate Walmart for hiring her despite her mental disability. So far, things are going well—she does have memory issues and can be slow at the register. Some customers have gotten frustrated with her for taking too long, but her trainer has spoken up for her.
Due to her SSDI and other benefits she receives, such as her housing subsidy and her care manager, she can only work a limited number of hours and cannot bring in more than $2000 combined income in a month. She started at $20 an hour. Amazing while my first job paid $1.65 an hour. Times have really changed! She receives several benefits, including free delivery for online purchases, free food delivery.
The first Lavender 2025
My husband lost his car key fob, and it will cost us $460 to replace it at the dealership. We checked with locksmiths, and while the cost of the fob itself is one expense, the programming significantly increases the overall cost. We are still deciding whether it would be more beneficial to go through the dealership or to use a locksmith. Additionally, I am exploring a digital startup through the KIA connect app that utilizes our smartphones, to start and open our car - I need to figure it out before presenting it to him.
All of this is currently pending.
Yesterday, my husband and his Tikfah friend, Patrick went to the two local colleges to ask permission to be on campus and set up a table about Israel, anti-Semitism, and Zionism. Shasta College is a community college, and Simpson is a Christian four-year liberal arts college.
Shasta College was enthusiastic about it and approved them. They have permission for the rest of the semester. We are still waiting on Simpson.
So they will have tables set up on Monday and Friday of next week.
And speaking of Israel - something you rarely hear from on the news
Israel also sent a team of highly skilled firefighters, who have stated that they will fully cover their own expenses without seeking reimbursement. In contrast, Mexico, Canada, and other states are being reimbursed, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's the norm but to think that little tiny Israel always steps up in a big way, shows how they continue to be a light to the nations.
Margarette Daisies, I confess, are not my favorite, but my husband loves them.
I cannot remember what these are—it seems that since the last iPhone update, I have been unable to identify the plants from my photos. I just refuse to add another app to my phone. All I know is that it is extremely drought-resistant and blooms profusely in the winter. They are a bush.
Look for the bee!
That is it for me this Friday. We are going out tonight, and tomorrow afternoon, we have a memorial to go to.
I hope you all have a wonderful, cozy evening and a good weekend.
Debby

Hi Debby, that is great that Israel is volunteering their help. I am praying that the rest of the hostages are released. It does feel good in the sun, but so cold for us in California. We made it to 59 today and 63 tomorrow. I sure wish we would get some rain!
ReplyDeleteWe’re supposed to be 63 today, too. Sitting in the sun feels so good on the old bones!
DeleteLove seeing your flowers blooming already. That yellow daisy looking flower looks a lot like the one I saw in the woods by the pond. It's still there blooming all by itself. Maybe a seed from your bush blew all the way over here! LOL. I guess I didn't realize you had a cat AND a dog! She looks happy with her new "bush" to play with! It looks real! Oh, Simpson College! I totally forgot about that school being out there near you! The church/denomination we used to minister in for many years is affiliated with that school! It's named after the founder of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, A.B. Simpson. I used to know a man and his wife who were there, I believe he was the President of the College, but I am sure they must be retired by now as they are older than we are. His name was Jim Grant, for some reason I can't remember his wife's name right now, but we knew them many moons ago when we all lived in Georgia at Toccoa Falls College, another school affiliated with the same church. Wow, you just made me go way back in time! Hazel...her name was Hazel Grant. I remembered! Yay me! We probably haven't seen them in over 40 years. So thanks for making me go down memory lane. I hope the college will be supportive of what your husband and friend want to do there. Although I don't think you will find that anti-Semitism is an issue at that college, unless things have really really changed over the years.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a lovely weekend. Bye for now.
I’m telling you it’s a small world. Simpson is just about 3-4 miles from me. We’re sure they will approve them - the person that does all that is on vacation. We also have near us (within a couple of miles Shasta Bible College and Graduate School.
DeleteThanks for visiting Pamela. Always a pleasure
Is the citrus from your trees?
ReplyDeleteNo. From neighbors trees.
DeleteIt's hard for me to believe you have flowers blooming and a temp of 61. Sounds wonderful! But it will come!
ReplyDeleteYour eggs are expensive! Here they are about $4.50 a dozen. And we are blessed to have neighbors with chickens who give us fresh eggs occasionally too.
Glad to hear Char has this job and will pray it works out well for her.
Israel does shine their light.
I just saw in the forecast clouds for Wednesday and Thursday so maybe something is changing. We all enjoy it but it’s our rainy season and we always need that too.
DeleteFree eggs are always welcome!
Glad your step-daughter was able to find a job. I love the smell of citrus fruit. Please send your warm weather over please. Cannot wait for Spring. Janice
ReplyDeleteI need to do some major baking using the citrus or I’ll be giving some of it away.
DeleteThe cookies look wonderful. Now it is bedtime, but I am so hungry. Gosh, we'd better be really careful not to lose our car keys!! We watch the news all day, and have not heard a word about Israel! So is this some kind of special cat plant that came with the posts, or did you buy the plants and stick them inside?
ReplyDeleteThe plants came with the scratching post.
DeleteHow wonderful to have such a refreshing and sunny day! It sounds like the perfect weather to enjoy sitting in the sun and soaking in the warmth before it cools down for the evening. The scent of lemons, oranges, and mandarins must fill the room with such a lovely, fresh aroma. How delightful it would be to share some with neighbours if you were nearby! It's these simple, everyday pleasures that make life feel so special. I hope you get to enjoy more of these sunshine-filled moments before the cold returns.
ReplyDeleteI’m enjoying every minute of the sunshine until the cold winter rains come back.
DeleteThe citrus looks lovely. We buy clementine's all winter here and it is hard to find good ones. Your weather sounds lovely. We are in for a very cold spell in our area. We'll spend the weekend with prep work for extreme cold.
ReplyDeleteThese are all so sweet and juicy. Stay warm!
Deleteyum on smell and taste of the citrus... what a great idea to make just enough cookies to eat. I do despise updates and wish they would just STOP IT.. except the security ones.
ReplyDeletemy first job was 1.99 an hour in 1963 for a finance company. your post is fun today and happy and bright... God bless the fireman from all over the world that are helping. Hope the other college comes through
What a blessing that the Israeli firefighters have volunteered to help at no cost, Debby. Wow! I'm sure you'll eventually hear from the other college that your husband and his friend approached and the answer will be positive. I sense a great awakening in this land that ISN'T a woke one. May God continue to bless both countries and our new president.
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying the fragrance of lemons sitting on my counter too. Our neighbor next door brought them over a few days ago.. I too need to bake something to use up some of them. The rest will be juice cubes to put in our water.
ReplyDeleteEGGS...don't get me started. the only eggs we could get last week were from Costco and they only had packs of 5 doz. for $17.49. Needed eggs so we bought the pack and split it with our son. Crazy times.
My first job working at Sears in 1962 got me a paycheck of $1.30...
Times sure have changed.
That is so wonderful reading about the Jewish community sending firefighters at no cost to the USA. It doesn't surprise that no mention of it is in our news ...But God Knows.
We are very familiar with Simpson Bible College. Many of our churches were involved with it when it was active in San Francisco. Lots of friendships made through it.
Thanks for bringing back some memories from so long ago.
Everything was covered in frost this morning but now its 42F and the white stuff is all gone.
Sue
Your citrus display looks so welcoming, Debby! In particular I love the bowls -- foreground like one from my mother's collection; the middle and rear reminiscent of her old Hall's Kitchenware mixing bowl.
ReplyDeleteI applaud any retailer who provides employment for the differently-abled; and props to Char's supervisor for stepping up on her behalf! If every clerk had half as much warmth and desire to please as I've seen here on occasion, this world would be such a nicer place.
That is some fantastic cat scratcher!!
ReplyDeleteThose are expensive eggs!
Lovely to see the flowers. Love the daisies.
I could do with one of those delicious looking cookies about now. :)
So many things to love about your post today, Debby. Those macadamia cookies look Yummy, and macadamai is always a favorite in this house. Susie has a new scratch post. Nel also has one in her home for Luca. Great news for Char. I hope she does well at Walmart. The daisies are already starting to bloom! And Oh, I can smell your oranges from here. They are delightful to have in the kichen. I only have one left. I must get some more! Always enjoy your "this and that" posts, Debby.

First things first....I am shocked about the price of EGGS. My goodness, I can't imagine. I am very thankful that the gentleman that takes care of your yard, brings me 18 eggs every other week. These are Fresh yard eggs, and the best thing is, they are FREE. I know your home has such a sweet fragrance from the lemons and oranges. They looks so good and I know that they taste so sweet. Great news for Char to have gotten a job. Hope she does well. All of your photos of the lovely flowers makes me ready for Spring. I've been busy trying to cover up as many of my plants as I can....supposed to be 14 degrees here in the morning. Enjoy this beautiful, COLD Sunday...of course, I know you will be enjoying some beautiful sunshine.
ReplyDeleteHello, oh I would love an orange, lemon and lime. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing about the firefighters from Israel coming to help.
Praying for Monday....
Love, Carla
First off I love oranges and mandarins always have.
ReplyDeleteNext $10.96 for a dozen eggs sounds like a lot so I converted that to Aus dollars and what the hell that is around $17. I pay $5.70 for a dozen cage free eggs which when converted is $2.10 USD
