More Hodgepodge from Me

 1. What was your after school routine like when you were a kid?

Walked home with friends, changed out of school clothes, got a snack, and sat on the floor in front of the TV to watch Dark Shadows.

and Where the Action Is with Dick Clark.

Did you ever watch Dark Shadows

and Where the Action is?

2. January 26 is National Green Juice Day ( I guess it's true everything really does have its day). Do you juice, as in make your own in an attempt to get healthy? Do you do the green juices? What's your favorite kind of juice (home blended or store bought, either one)?

Nope - I don’t juice.

No.

N/A

3. What's something trivial about which you have a strong opinion?

It's too trivial for me to have developed a strong opinion.

4. What do you need more of in your life? Less of?

I don’t need anything more that God hasn’t already provided. He equips me with everything I need. What could be more than that?

Less negativity.

5. Give us three adjectives to describe your January.

1. Sunny

2. Mild

3. Dry

While the rest of the country was experiencing freezing temperatures, we enjoyed three weeks of pleasant weather, which allowed us to go outside for walks and hikes. One of my sons even went camping. It has been nice, but we're not even halfway through our winter rainy season. Fortunately, it looks like we might receive significant rainfall by the end of this week.

Winter is strange. It's the season when everyone tries to keep the house as hot as it was in the summer.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Last week, I attended a discussion with other ladies my age, and the conversation turned to the idea of making our children, grandchildren, or spouses our idols - placing them in the “high places” of our life.  I had never considered this perspective before, but the more I reflected on it, the more I realized that I might have been guilty of this in my younger years.

Colossians 3:1-2 encourages us to set our hearts and minds on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. This means that while we cherish our relationships with family, and we love them dearly - we should always keep our main focus on Christ and His eternal kingdom.

That's enough from me.

Until next Wednesday, I wish you well.

Debby

    1. It was big here - everyone was really into Dark Shadows. My mom bought me Josette’s music box one Christmas.
I watched Soul train on Saturdays.

  2. Hi Debby, oh golly, camping in winter. Hee Hee, we had NEGATIVE 25 degrees last Tuesday.

    1. Yeah it surely made me think. Makes sense - we must put God above all. Sometimes we need these little unsettling reminders.

  3. It's hard to not make things or people whom we see every day as our idols as we are physically and emotionally invested in them. I try to focus on God and make him my number priority but I know that I often fail at that. How nice for you guys to have beautiful weather! I hope you get the rain that you need. Have a good day!

    1. I believe an idol can be anything that takes our attentions away from God, and since we aren’t perfect it can happen. I may not have liked the discussion at first because it was convicting but the more I thought and prayed about it, the more I understand. Sometimes we need to feel uncomfortable to wake us up!

  4. I rode the bus to and from school. I didn't watch those shows. We actually didn't have tv till I was in 5th grade which was 1970. I remember being jealous of kids that could watch Leave it to Beaver! :)
Interesting conversation with your friends. I feel I was and can still be guilty of that.

    1. Wow really? No TV?? I grew up on TV. Sad but true but where I grew up it was just the culture, I guess. I thought everyone did.
No Leave it to Beaver? I liked that show.
That’s what I enjoy my Thursday discussion group - we tackle uncomfortable topics and then look at what scripture says. Eye opening and convicting!

  5. Morning Debby....I never watched Dark Shadows, but I had heard of it. Dick Clark...Yes! I'm already dreading my next electric bill from all of the cold we have had, and us trying to keep the house warm. Hoping you all get the rain that is needed in your area. I'm guessing this was an interesting conversation in regards in allowing family members to become idols. The bonds and love for family can certainly be Super strong, but nothing should come before our love for the Lord. I am sure I have been guilty. I know there is a big wave of drinking greens to boost our immune systems and for health, but like you, I prefer to eat my greens. Enjoy this beautiful Wednesday...

    1. The drinking of greens seems to come in waves with new generations- I once bought a juicer. What a complete hassle it was! And cleaning the juicer out as well. I think we probably stopped it all after barely 2 weeks. LOL
Just give me a plate of homegrown broccoli 🥦 and I’m good!

    1. Yeah the religious kids would do that. I didn’t grow up in a religious home so my mom let me. Heck at times she would sit down and watch it too!!

  7. Your last photo is STUNNING!!! I used to watch Dark Shadows after school too! I loved it. And also Where The Action Is. I don't juice either, and never have.

  8. it really is funny, we heat the house in winter and cool the house in summer. this year we had zero days that were what we call, open all the windows, air out the house. it was either 90's or 50's. I love that big tree.
I was an avid watchers of Dark Shadows, but I had two sons by then and worked part time, and had to squeeze it in when I could. alas there was no DVR back then, not even a recorder. Dick Clark was around for most of my life and yes I watched it.
my favorite of your answer today is #3, It's too trivial for me to have developed a strong opinion. Your answer makes so much since. you gave me an idea for a post. one of my pet peeves which I have a strong opinion on and it is NOT trivial to me..

  10. No, I never watched Dark Shadows or Where the Action Is. (Dick Clark and his ilk was frowned on by my parents.) Love your response to #4 and now your closing thought? Much to ponder.

    1. My mom used to watch it with me. For the kids who lived in religious homes I can see it. I didn’t. Now I never allowed my sons while they were under my care to watch shows or movies like that.

  11. I hardly got to watch television at all when I was young, but I do recall the names of both those shows. If we didn't have homework and it wasn't raining, we were ushered outdoors to play with neighbors and friends. Fun times and great memories!

    1. I don't remember much homework back then - not until middle or high school. After those shows, I went outside - we usually ate dinner around 6 pm.

    1. Before Dark Shadows, I went out to play - but Dark Shadows was addicting. Only a 30 minute show and I'd eat my snack = then go outside or do homework which I didn't have daily homework only book reports and a project - not until middle or high school did I have a lot of homework

  13. I liked watching Dark Shadows after school too. And when I got to my teenage years I watched General Hospital. Soaps were huge back then. Currently sitting outside reading blogs under blue sunny skies. So nice! Have a great day!

    1. Oh yes, General Hospital—Luke and Laura! I was pregnant with my second son when all of that was going on. Blue skies here as we all wait for the weather to change. It keeps saying rain but nothing yet

  14. We didn't get a tv until I was in the 5th grade. Loved Roy Rogers and Dale Evens, Hopalong Cassidy and then Dragnet with my mom. When I came home from high school mom would be ironing in front of the tv watching General Hospital or some other soap opera. That got me hooked for a very long time on soaps. Never watched Dark Shadows it was too scary and folks did not like things like that. Dick Clark show was my "dance teacher". That's where we learned the "moves".

  17. Idols came up a bunch this week especially reading the daily Bible readings and coming to the Golden Calf. I had to write down a great quote by Calvin on that subject. It is a wake up call to consider the idols in our own lives instead of calling out the Israelites on theirs. I'm not familiar with those two programs you watched. I must be a lot older than you. wink wink. How lovely to be able to hike in January! Have a great last couple days of January!

  18. I never watched that show. I love your answer about not needing anything more that God has given to you. How wonderful to have the nice weather.

  19. I love hearing about your after-school routine—it sounds like the perfect way to unwind, especially with shows like *Dark Shadows* and *Where the Action Is*! I bet you were glued to the TV for those. As for juicing, it’s totally fair if it’s not your thing, but I bet the green juice enthusiasts would argue it’s a great way to sneak in some extra veggies!

Your perspective on needing more and less is so peaceful—you're right, with everything we need already provided, it’s easy to focus on the little things like keeping negativity at bay. And your January sounds lovely—sunny, mild, and dry, that’s a pretty nice way to kick off the year!

  21. I was a Dark Shadows fan as well. Used to watch it at a friends house after school. Her Mother watched it as well as General Hospital so we watched that with her mom as well.
