Socks, Wind, Church Lady, and Chicken Wings

I forgot to mention this...

I was determined to spend the rest of the Kohl's cash that I had mentioned a few posts ago - It was surprisingly difficult to find something for $7.50, so I ended up buying some much-needed socks for $11.50 to wear with my jeans and nicer shoes rather than my hiking boots.

Oh, they're so soft and cute.

AND Yes, socks can be cute!

So it's Sunday!

We experienced a wind event from Friday night through all day Saturday, and a little bit this morning. This caused power outages for some customers throughout the area, several power lines came down, and a power pole snapped. We also had some spot fires, but they were quickly extinguished. Sometimes I wish they wouldn’t announce these windy conditions, as it seems to attract arsonists. Some neighbors mentioned they would stay awake all Saturday night listening to the scanner. Sadly, that is what it takes - you can't trust your safety to any Government agency. We didn't lose any power - we rarely do because we don't have PGE!

It was cold as well—not as cold as what you all just experienced but it was in the 50s during the day but it was that wind chill, it felt like the 40s during the day and the 30s at night. I had to pull out a wool coat that I only wear for such rare occasions, and I was grateful I hadn’t gotten rid of it. It’s hard to find really warm coats around here.

I had to be the old
church lady today

A group of teen girls gathered in the warm kitchen, at church and more of them continued to come in. No one wanted them in there, as they were in our way but no one wanted to speak to them. I finally asked if they were there to help. They all looked at me as if I had said something foreign. I told them that if they weren't there to help, then they needed to leave. They all gave me those looks I used to give grown-ups, grunted, and groaned, but eventually, they left.

We’re facing some challenges with the kids, especially the teens. A few of us have discussed this issue. At potlucks, the teens get in line first, and by the time the elderly get to the food, a significant portion is already gone. That’s not how I was raised. At the church I used to go to, in the Bay Area,  it was moms with little ones and then the elderly. Additionally, when I came downstairs to open the boxes of donuts, I noticed that half of them were already gone - with half-eaten ones on the table. They should not be eaten until after the service.

No one likes confrontation, but we need to address this.

Dinner is calling to me...

For dinner tonight, I fixed some buffalo chicken wings.  The aroma is intoxicating.  I usually purchase my chicken wings from a local butcher, which offers exceptionally large and meaty wings, which is just right for the two of us.

Have a great evening -

Debby

  1. The socks are cute! I think that was a good thing to put your $7.50 toward.
Glad you didn't have any issues from the wind.
Sorry to hear about the issue with the teens. Maybe it needs to be addressed with the parents? Not an easy situation!

    1. I don’t want to be the one to address it because I’m a newbie and the others don’t want to either but they don’t like it. I just read on another blog this morning - a meme that basically said, if you aren’t going to address a situation then you either accept it or move on. Well, I’m not going to leave over such a situation so I just accept it until someone who knows the parents say something. Or the Sunday school teachers could remind the children about their manners.!

  2. I got myself some nice warm socks for Christmas. Our weather has been cold for us and we even got some rain! I even wore boots today at church. I hope we get more rain! Have a great week!

    1. I’m happy for the rain down there! We might have some rain later this week, too

  3. Polka dot socks; I love them! Oh my, what to do about the teenagers! And try to do what Jesus would and also not drive them away from the church. This would give a Talmudic scholar a headache!

    1. That’s funny! - well there’s a lot in the Talmud as well as the Torah and Tanakh on unruly children. I think I’m just going to stay out of it. I haven’t been there long enough to know the parents.

  4. We sometimes have issues with teens coming into our store to steal. We now make them check their bags at the counter if they want to come in and make sure they know we have cameras. Its sad, but even older folks will steal. Once an older lady bought a cheap item, only to find out later she stole a more expensive one of the same item. She was caught on camera, but too late as she had already left. We have had to call the police many times and many have been caught. It is such a shame. Your socks are cute. I have a friend who buys all kinds of different socks. We call her sock lady...and I do remember Church Lady. You did the right thing calling them out. Janice

    1. No complaints yet.

Shoplifters here, the police don’t even come out and small businesses have had to close due to the theft. Or if they arrest them, they’re out within an hour. It’s a big joke. We voted in November for tougher enforcement but haven’t seen any real change yet.

  5. I've also used Kohl's cash to buy cute new socks :-)

  6. Oh first, I wanted to mention that my blog friends are always so good at getting back to me right away with e-mails. You happened to not see my e-mail a couple times, so I totally understand that. I was mostly referring to those that see the e-mails and phone calls, and then wait and wait to reply.

Now, I love your socks! Jess got me some socks similar to them for Christmas, and they were a treat from all my white ones. And we all need socks, so that was a good purchase with your Kohl's card. We had a really windy day yesterday too. It was strange, and came out of nowhere. Your buffalo chicken wings sound amazing. I think I can eat a dozen of them at once! haha Have a wonderful week, Debby.

    1. Hi Sheri - new socks are a treat for the feet! 👣 And when they’re new and soft, even better!
Oh those chicken wings were big and juicy and cooked up good in the oven. We were going to grill them but easier in the oven.
LOL - I felt so bad that time when I missed your email. I’m really trying to watch for blog emails now. I spent a good portion of a day, deleting myself from a bunch of spam type emails and configured it to where my blog emails are on top!

  7. I love those socks you chose, Debby! Sorry to hear about the attitudes of the teens at your church. You'd think the parents would have raised them better than that. Oh, well, go figure. Blessings!

    1. It’s like everyone just tolerated it not wanting to step on any toes. The kitchen is just too small. Plus you let some, then it sends a message to the others!

  8. I adore cute socks! Being as they're relatively inexpensive, I probably have more than I need -- but it's fun to coordinate with whatever blouse/sweater I have on.
That's so sad about the teens; the word 'entitled' comes to mind. Is it possible to put up signage -- something like what airlines use in the pre-boarding area to signify who goes first. Please let us know how it goes!

    1. I’m still fairly new and don’t know what kids belong to who - the way one gal looked at me was like, “do you know who my parents are?” LOL.

  9. Adorable socks! I so enjoy cute socks. glad you were able to finish using your card without having to leave a small balance on it. I too was raised where the young children, the elderly, the women were served first, or went through the line first. No respect these days from many of the younger generation. Stay warm and enjoy the last few days of January.

  10. Love your socks and I am in need of some new ones myself. Time for a drawer cleaning and out with the old and in with the new.
Its a delicate situation with the teens but you did the right thing by asking them if they were there to help. Positive question with the great answer. Help or go.. I bet there were lots of eye rolls after that. Hope it did the trick though.

  11. Good luck with the teen issues. Sadly, the lack of discipline is creeping into the fabric of society in many ways. And next is responsibility. I pray for wisdom for the two when I see things like you have shared with us.
    I like your socks. :-)

    1. It was like they were shocked someone actually said something to them. Everyone just tolerated their behavior.

  12. We all need socks so a wise buy, some teens are rude and lack discipline and manners but not all there are some really nice, polite and helpful teens as well

    1. Oh I’m sure these teens are good kids that just have been getting away with things because the adults just turn away. I’ve known some impressive teens so not all are rude.

  13. I LOOOOOOVE socks and cute socks are all in my drawer. I don't buy the uggos. The girls around here call that Kohl Crack. They go nuts for it. Have a great week.
