A Sunday Potluck
So, how’s everyone handling that missing hour in the day? I’m trying not to complain too much, but I can definitely feel it. I got home from church and ended up taking a quick one-hour nap, but I’m still feeling pretty worn out. Can’t wait for bedtime, even though it’s only 4:41 p.m.!
But really, do we all have to complain so much about the time change? I know I do and I'm going to stop it NOW! Seems, the grumbling is twice-a-year—Spring Forward and Fall Back. And you can count on the complaining to start one week before and one week after!
It’s just what we do!
I'm done.
Just as I thought, we had a fun mix of cabbage salads inspired by Asian flavors, along with chicken and pork served up with rice or noodles. To top it off, someone brought in two pizzas, a pasta dish, and some fresh fruit to share. It was a great spread!
Mochi Donuts - the delightful Japanese treat that brought a unique twist to the dessert table!
There were so many desserts, but I made the conscious decision, to skip them. I don’t really need them, even though they looked so pretty. On Friday, I whipped up some white chocolate chip macadamia nut cookie dough, and after dinner, I baked 2- 4 cookies so we wouldn’t go crazy eating them. We both don't do well, with cookies lying around, or we’d scarf them down every time we walked by!
Regarding the Fire Map
If they had these maps before, I had never seen them or even knew about them.
After a robust rainy season, we have an abundant of water and snow here.
The rest of the state, I don't know.
I chose to rise above the victim mentality, fretting, and worrying - to embrace the truth that we are more than conquerors. We have been gifted a new identity in Christ that empowers us to live victoriously, no matter our circumstances.
If I can embrace victory after the loss of my son, I can certainly overcome losing my home in a fire. The loss of a loved one is a greater challenge than anything material. We'll do our part and trust God for the rest!
🍔🍕🍗
Dinner time has arrived, and now it's time to eat!
See you tomorrow...maybe.
Debby

Glad to hear the potluck went well. The mochi donuts are cute!
ReplyDeleteI'm doing ok with the time change. What bugs me is the politicians keep saying they are going to stop it, but never do. Now, I'll stop complaining too! :)
Good thoughts on embracing victory.
About the picture of Connor on my post - yes, somehow he got a little scrape on his nose...
Here in California we actually voted to end daylight savings and it passed. The legislation has done nothing and it’s been about 10 years.
DeleteThose cookies looked like none other I have ever seen - very pretty. I wish they would just leave the time one way or the other. Good idea about just making a couple cookies at a time. And just leaving worries up to God.
ReplyDeleteThe cookies are freshly baked and warm for our after dinner treat and is satisfying.
DeleteThe potluck sounded good, Debby. I agree that complaining about the time change is just whistling in the wind. Daylight savings has been around for more than 100 years and it's not going to end anytime soon. Thanks for your visits to Writing Straight from the Heart and for your comments, too. They are both soooo appreciated.Hope you have a good week ahead. Susan
ReplyDeleteI enjoy you and your blog.
DeleteYes, just whistling in the wind - good analogy
The Mochi donuts are so beautiful. You must have tremendous willpower!
ReplyDeleteAt times. But a few friends younger than me found out they have pre- diabetes or full blown diabetes and I don’t want that to be, if I can help it. I’m fortunate I do not have a strong sweet tooth so it’s easier for me than it is for my husband.
DeleteMaking Asian food is a bit hard for me as well. I dont have one recipe myself that I cook. We usually go out for this type of food. The donuts look yummy. Janice
ReplyDeleteThat’s what Take Out is for!
DeleteI am pretty sure that verse was written way before time change, which means its ok to complain about it. ha ha... I complained this year for 3 weeks, when I noticed it on the calendar, and have not stopped complaining since it happened yesterday. this is the one that slaps my body clock sideways, the other one I adjust in 3 days, this one takes weeks. Beau complained but did not know why, he was complaining about waiting 4 hours for it to get light enough to walk. we wake up at 3 which before etime change worked well with schedule... see I can't stop.
ReplyDeleteHa ha.😆 you’re funny. Soon we’ll all forget about it until October. Although I like Falling back. Love that we regain that extra hour.
DeleteSounds like some delicious food was served and how great for someone to bring pizzas. A good many people are not huge fans of Asian foods, which means the pizzas were well appreciated I am sure. I know your faith is so strong Debby and I'm glad to hear that you are not allowing the strongholds of fear from the fire chances, bring you down. God is our protector and the great news is, He is our provider. Prayers that nothing ever happens in your area to cause a loss of homes, but I know that no matter what the future holds, God is in Control and He will take care of you. On the topic of time change...I love the time change and am very happy to give up that one hour of sleep, for the daylight in the evenings. I think for people with Low serotonin levels, we need the daylight as long as possible in the evenings. Just mhy thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI know about the low serotonin levels - I’ve spent 30-40 years struggling with depression. SAD is real but my husband bought me a special SAD light and it helps me tremendously during the winter gloom.
DeleteFor me, daylight savings is more HOT 100 degree sun blaring in my windows. I don’t like it being still light out at 9pm. Although I do enjoy the mornings, watching the sunrise.
Another amazing post Debby!!! I recently read another post about what if the fire hit our home... they also shared similar thoughts that you did. Very powerful, thank you.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the time change ... HATE IT ... but I too have decided I cannot do a thing about it. I will shut up and carry on. ;-) Now the politicians can do the same.
Thanks Carla.
Deletelol - good advice. Shut up and Carry on! 😊
I did sleep ok Saturday night then alarm woke me up. I didn't even hear my husband get out of bed. We ate lunch in a restaurant in another town after church. Once back home I decided to rest a on my bed. Spring forward ✨️ bugs me a bit more than normal time. Hubby and I talked about Last Supper movie done by The Chosen. Decided when we can be there after he gets off work, eat dinner at a restaurant that's quick. Then watch the movie 🎬. Have a blessed day 🙏 🌷
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday. Somehow I don’t recall seeing your post in my feed. I haven’t heard of the Last Supper movie.
DeleteMochi donuts are new to me, but sooooo appealing -- like something I'd see at Disney. Your 'spread' does sound wonderful; if I were there I'd likely station myself in front of the pizza with "keep out" sign on my back. (*jk*)
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you on the time change ... no way I'm looking forward to hot Southern nights. And mosquitos. But heck, what can we do about it but pray for patience.
The teenagers swarmed the pizza! 🍕 I adore pizza.
DeleteIt’s too hot here to sit out at night, unless it’s 11pm or so.
That sounds like a delightful church potluck. I sure miss those. So much fellowship and great eats make wonderful memories.
ReplyDeleteYes God is in control and some things that I have "taken back" need to be given to Him again.
I snoozed yesterday too. It did feel really Good.

I actually don’t care for pot lucks. I have a hang up about cleanliness in their kitchens - food handling etc. It’s my hang up - doesn’t bother my husband. He’s like Mikey, he’ll eat anything.
DeleteI am one that never has an issue with the time change. If we ever eliminate it I would perfer we stay on daylight savings. I love have it light so late in the evening. Must be because I am a late night person, not early morning.
ReplyDeleteWe had friends that lost everything in the Paradise fire. They could not afford fire insurance. They ended up moving out of state eventually.
After years of work potlucks I liked them but wish I could instill some rules(suggestions). 1.Bring something that is easy for people to get a serving without having to build it. 2, Don't over bring, people very often take a dap of each dish not a full serving. 3. Do not run to get something from the store at noon when the potluck starts. By the time you get back people have already filled their plates and are sat down eating. What ever you picked up usuallty gets ignored because you are too late.
I always feel bad for those who end up with a lot left over. One thing I tried for years was to put the utensils and napkins at the end of the food so you do not have to carry them through the line as you are getting your food but people are so conditioned to getting them at the begining someone would enebablty pick up the containers and move them to the front. Oh well, sometimes you cannot retrain folks!
Early morning person here! After a busy day I’m ready for bed by 9 and force myself to 9:30. Summer I’m forced to stay up later so that means a nap in the afternoon.
DeleteThere do need to be rules for a successful potluck! I like your idea putting the silverware at the end so you don’t have to hold it while getting the food. I always just put them in my back pocket!
I really like visiting the Sundial Bridge and Turtle Bay. We made trips up there to see some of the exibits. One of my favorites was the Art of the Brick.
ReplyDeleteIt is a nice area.
DeleteSuch wonderful words about trusting God, Debby. They are so meaningful. My sister lost her husband and son all in the course of a year, and she has been through quite a lot, but she has been blessed with a big family who lives close by. I worry about the summers and the fire season too, but always pray when I hear of any too close. Those mini donuts are so yummy looking. I am afraid I would eat a dozen at one time haha. The potluck spread sounds delicious. The time change doesn't affect me too much, but I wish there was one and we stuck with that. ; )

I love mochi donuts!
ReplyDeleteThe change of time forward or back makes no difference to me by body just adapts
