Hiking Weather

The weather has been fantastic for the past few days! We've enjoyed warm temperatures, reaching over 80 degrees, with yesterday being the hottest at 84. However, we're expecting rain to start tonight around 10 p.m. and it will continue into Sunday and Monday.

So we were not going to let this good weather go to waste...

this is hiking weather! 🥾

This is the bike trail we did not go on -

We live and "recreation" on the ancestral land of the Wintu people, a local Native California tribe.

On Wednesday afternoon, after I returned home from my Bible study group, we decided to go for a hike—my first one of the year. It wasn't a long hike, as I had to turn back at the halfway point. As I made my way up the trail, I quickly realized that I was pushing myself a bit too hard for this 71 year old body.  Although I had to hike back down, the good news was that the path downhill was easier. If I had continued on, I would have had to make a long trip back up, and I just wasn't up for that challenge. I took my time and was extra cautious because there were some muddy spots along the way.

I had a great time, but I felt disappointed in myself. When I mentioned this to my son, he replied, "Mom, you really need to prepare for those hikes, especially if you haven't been climbing steep inclines."

Yeah yeah yeah -

We didn’t encounter anyone else while we were out. When we arrived home, I was completely exhausted, and I slept very soundly Wednesday night.

On Thursday morning, I woke up to the sounds of birds chirping. While my back felt sore, my legs and feet were doing just fine. To help ease the stiffness, I decided to take a walk behind our neighborhood. It's not a long walk—about 2 miles. I find that if I keep moving, I don't get stiff.

There's a piece of land for sale where this pond sits, and we couldn't help but imagine what it would be like to buy it and build a home with a view of the pond. It would be such an easy move—just 0.4 miles from our current house!

 I'd stock it with fish!

Decades ago, this area was for cattle ranching and there are many of these cattle ponds back here.

Typically, there are goats on this property - I did hear some donkeys in the distance.

There are quite a few coyotes in this area. We've lost 2 outdoor cats to coyotes. If you live in a rural place, you might already be familiar with this, but it's something I've learned over the 17 years we've lived here. Donkeys can be really helpful in keeping coyotes away! These friendly animals are great at protecting their space. It might sound a bit unusual, but there's a good reason for this. Donkeys make deep sounds, known as brays, that coyotes find unpleasant. Because of this, coyotes prefer to stay away from areas where donkeys are present.

Sometimes we will be sitting on our patio and hear donkeys. Now that's a sound you don't hear in San Francisco!

The road is on the left -

We're still within city limits - it feels like we're in the country.

I love that I live here. I have easy access to nature while still being close to town.

You can see the pond from another angle, but it really needs a lot of cleaning. People have thrown away all sorts of things there, including sofas and other trash. I even spotted a TV sticking out of the water once! We also noticed broken fluorescent light bulbs, which are dangerous to the environment. I tried calling the city, but this property is considered county and it is on private property.

There has been some cleanup done, but we still have people who camp in that area, make campfires, and leave their trash behind.

I continued my walk - on this dirt road.

My goodness, these cheery tree blossoms were gorgeous.

I loved this curly type of cactus. I'm not sure if it is a ribbed cactus.

On Friday, I went grocery shopping with my son and took care of some errands. Meanwhile, my husband and his daughter went for a hike near the Keswick Dam, and he sent me some photos from their adventure.

The city and county use goats to help clear vegetation—it takes a herd a day to clear 14 acres. It looks like these three wandered away from their designated area and ended up in a parking lot.

Initially, I mistook these for PVC pipes, entwined within the flowers but it turns out they're actually the white branches.

They're known as Bookbrush.

These are interesting, too. This is a species of willow.

By Friday afternoon, I started to feel some discomfort in my mid to lower back. I've noticed that sometimes it takes a full day after a strenuous hike for the soreness to kick in.  Despite that, I couldn't just relax because we had plans to meet my son and his wife for our monthly Double Date Night! We both were celebrating our February wedding anniversaries.

It was their turn to choose, so we met up at Cattlemen's Steak House. By the time we got home, I was completely exhausted. I changed into my pajamas and barely made it to 9:30 PM!

Foodie texted me this older photo of Mt Shasta from his many hiking treks up that way.

Today, I have been resting and finishing up my bible study (Revelation 17)

It is a lot cooler today at 74 and those wispy white clouds are moving in.

Wow! I just realized today is March 1st. Happy March, everyone! And Happy Spring, too! I hope you’re all feeling cheerful and well!

 Until later...

Debby

  1. I understand the back ache, and I know just how that feels. I actually took a nap today wrapped up in my electric blanket/throw, which is very comforting for achy joints and back. Thankfully today was cool enough that the heated blanket still felt good. Once things get hotter around here I won't want to do that...well maybe if the AC is running I will. But also a hot shower helps too. Your hiking area and woods, flowers, goats, etc., are all so beautiful. You live in a lovely place. yes, that pond definitely needs some cleaning. It looks muddy or something. But if you owned the property and could get it cleaned out, hopefully you'd be able to keep it that way. It needs some "love"! Yes, our pond has some things buried in it as well. When the pond dries up a bit during our dry season, we see all kinds of things out there in the muck. But it is too mucky to go get them without sinking in. So they stay and when the rain comes back everything is covered up again. Mostly I've noticed old tires. Yes, coyotes definitely like cats. I saw one carrying one in it's mouth back to its den before. That was very distressing, but there wasn't anything I could do about it. Not about to tangle with a hungry coyote who's got his prized supper in his mouth.
I hope you are feeling better tonight. Take care and try to do smaller hikes at a time until you build back up your strength. That's what I have to tell myself too.

    1. I feel fine. I just keep moving. Heat up a gel pack and that helps.

  2. Good for you for doing all that hiking! I hope your back is feeling better though.
We have coyotes around here too and lost a cat to one. I didn't know about the donkeys though!
That is beautiful property. What a nice site for a home.

    1. That is why Susie is an inside cat. It’s heartbreaking to lose a cat that way.

  3. Yes, we always feel the after affects when we do more strenuous physical activities, but I'm so glad you recovered sooner than later, Debby. March 1 is my birthday, and I turned 70. Do I feel it? On many days, yes, but I'm determined to keep going as long as the Lord allows. It just seems unreal in so many ways because my inner child never gets old, bored or lacking in love. God bless you!

  4. The Brookbush is so awesome and unusual!! I have never seen or heard of it before. What glorious photos of the berries and the cherry blossoms. You call TWO MILES a short walk?!! Oh my! I cannot even walk across Wal-Mart. But I guess it is all a matter of age and perspective. I am glad you are pushing yourself to keep fit. As they say, use it or lose it!

  5. Hoping your back gets better...I find it so hard to believe that after a long Winter, when I do choose to exercise or work in the yard, that I have muscles all over my body that are screaming at me.."What are you doing?" Our muscles and tendons soften up so easily when not used. The whole area around you is so pretty Debby. So many wonderful places to hike and walk. The blooms of the cherry blossoms are so beautiful and rich in color. Great pictures of Mt. Shasta... Hope you will rest your back. Take care..

  6. Good for you, getting out and around ... and (unintentionally) prompting me to do the same. These olden legs aren't up for a lengthy hike, but I promised my primary I'd do my best to keep moving. (Some days Voltaren doesn't do the trick.)
That's really interesting about donkeys keeping coyotes at bay. I remember my son and DIL saying something about their neighbors' doing that -- in an effort to save the deer.
    Happy Birthday blessings!!!

  7. I hear you on the screaming muscles. Please take it easy . I have to say that your photos are lovely and I don't blame you on wanting to get out there in the warm sunshine yesterday.
Today it is chilly and drippy. Only 53F right now.
A perfect day to enjoy my egg salad sandwich and be cozy inside . Church this morning and now we are hunkered down for the rest of the day.

  8. Oh my, you had a journey didn't you with that hike. I think it is great that you hiked at all. You live in a gorgeous area! I loved seeing the pink cherry blossoms. The ribbed cactus. Your area has a lot of vegetation. I love the goats too. Some people get some here to clean their yards.

  9. How wonderful that you went for a hike. The flowers are all pretty and the cactus. Sorry about your back. Hope your double date went well. Happy Anniversary to all of you. Love the picture Foodie sent you. Take care.

  10. Happy March, hope you are feeling better. When I start to garden again, after the winter break, my body aches. I try so hard to keep in shape for the gardening season, but I think so many muscles are used for gardening... I just cannot keep them all in shape. Hee Hee!
Thank you for the lovely photos.

  11. Debby, your post hit home for me, as I did a complete post scheduled for tomorrow about the Wintu tribe. That's great that you took that hike, even if you couldn't make it all the way. And taking a walk the next day was awesome. This property is really nice. It's not so much the expense of buying the land, but it's much harder to build the house than one might think. I've looked into it myself. There's so many things to consider with permits, etc. The cherry blossom pics are so pretty. I hope your back pain is feeling better. Cattlemen's is a great choice for dinner - delicious meals, big portions, good service. The Revelations verse is so special. Thanks for sharing that. Always enjoy your posts, Debby. Your photos are lovely on here today.

    Happy March!

  15. I know that once I pull on the hiking boots and start walking I am going to gradually have to add to the distance. I can hardly wait until the snow and ice are gone and I can be out and about once more. Love all the colour in your natural world.

    God bless.
