Times Flies
A foggy sunrise at Clover Creek
I hope this finds you all cheerful, content, and thankful for life. It has been a wonderful week. The only drawback I can find about this week is how quickly it has passed.
So I decided I needed to find out WHY.
As we age, we often wonder why time seems to pass more quickly. Dr. Christian Yates, a lecturer at the University of Bath, shares insights into this change in our perception of time.
One key factor is that daily routines and familiar experiences cause our brains to blur time together, making it feel like it speeds up. In contrast, children perceive time as expansive due to their constant engagement in new and stimulating experiences, which create lasting memories.
Another aspect relates to the biological changes that occur with aging. As our metabolism slows, so do our heartbeat and respiration rates, leading to a perception that time is moving faster.
The third idea is that our perception of time changes as we age. For a two-year-old, waiting a year for a birthday feels long because that year represents a significant portion of their life. In contrast, for a 20-year-old, a year is just 5% of their life, making it seem to fly by.
Dr. Yates notes that the time experienced between ages five and ten can feel similar to the time felt between ages 40 and 80. So, regardless of how we feel, time continues to fly by—both when we’re having fun and when we’re not.
So don't forget to spring forward on Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
In 2 Peter 3:8, we are reminded that "with the Lord, a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day."
No worries - we'll get through this one as we have before.
Later - Debby

I loved how this guy explained the phenomenon of why we feel the days are flying by, Debby. I detest the time change, and I'm hoping that under this administration, the Congress will pass a bill that keeps the time the same all year round. I don't know if you saw my latest blog, but I have family visiting next week, so don't be alarmed if I don't visit your posts next week. The family takes priority! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteGo and have a great time with family! We’ll all be here when you get back!
Deleteyes, they say "time flies when you are having fun", but I don't know that too many of us are really having "fun" in our older age...lol. We mostly live by routines...with a few spontaneous events thrown in to keep life interesting. I look for the joy and beauty in each day, like that picture you shared of the foggy creek, it certainly has a beauty all its own. Views like that, and all of nature around us, help to make our days more pleasant...and then when we can meet new people or enjoy a visit with an old friend or family, that makes it all the better. I don't really like the time change thing. It always takes me at least a week to adjust, but then I really don't mind the longer days for the summer time. It's the long winter nights that I don't like the most. But life is too short to live life complaining about these things...just go with the flow and make the most of every day while they last. Time is definitely fleeting...
ReplyDeleteThis year’s time change I’m trying not to complain. lol. It’s a stretch for sure! I wish we would just stick to one and end all the complaining.
DeleteI've heard that explanation of a year being a much smaller percentage when you are 60 which make sense to me. I never heard the other ones though. Very interesting!
ReplyDeleteYour foggy morning picture is so beautiful!
I never knew either. Just trying to make sense of it.
DeleteInteresting facts about time flying by as we age. I feel the weeks do seem to go by quickly. What a pretty foggy morning at Clover Creek. I know that God's time is very different than our time. And that is very interesting and special to me. In The Chosen, Jesus used the word "soon" often, and the Disciples didn't exactly know when that would be. Thank you for the reminder of the time change. I always seem to forget about it. Have a blessed weekend, Debby.

I’m as ready as I can be!
DeleteThis is SO interesting! Long ago, I read an explanation for why time seems faster the older we get, but I did not write it down, so forgot the reason. I LOVE this and am going to copy some of it so I don't forget again!
ReplyDeleteGlad to be some help! 😉
DeleteCool post. Indeed, time flies etc. Have a beautiful day, my friend.
ReplyDeleteYep it flies by too fast.
DeleteA foggy sunrise at Clover Creek is just gorgeous. Very interesting why, we feel time is flying by - for us - it is. Interesting. Time change is tonight. That hour will fly by!!!!!!!! lol
ReplyDeleteSince the bulk of my week is Tuesday through Thursday by Friday I’m thinking it’s Saturday. It doesn’t make a lot of sense but I do it.
DeleteHow interesting! Yes, it seems the older I get the faster those grains of sand flow through the hourglass. As a result, I'm trying to appreciate ordinary times and make the best out of what earthly time I've left.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a good plan - making the best out of what time we have left; whatever that means to each person.
DeleteI can attest to the fact that from 70 to 80 time went really fast, and now that I am 6 months into my 80's it is on highspeed fast forward, so fast I sometime don't know what day it is. I think a lot of it is because everything is the same, like ground hog day, and because I know the end is nearer and nearer..
ReplyDeleteWell we never really know when our end will come - all we can do is enjoy what life we have now. And you Sandra are a joy and we all enjoy you! 😘
DeleteOh my...glad for the reminder about the time change. Oops, almost forgot. Wouldn't that be embarrassing to show up at church late. Here's to a nice weekend. Maybe one that doesn't fly by:)
ReplyDeleteI’m sure you wouldn’t be the first! Ha ha, we’re already halfway through the weekend.
DeleteThanks for the explanation of why 'time flies'.
ReplyDeleteSure! It was time!
DeleteWhat a thoughtful reflection on how time seems to fly by, especially as we age. The foggy sunrise at Clover Creek sounds like such a peaceful moment, which perfectly complements your meditation on time. Dr. Yates’ insights on how our perception of time changes with routine and aging really hit home. It’s fascinating how our brain blurs time as we grow older, making it feel like it passes quicker, while children experience a much slower pace with their constant new discoveries. It’s such a reminder to stay mindful and appreciate the present moment, especially as time seems to slip away faster than we expect.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are having a great weekend. You are invited to read my new post: https://www.melodyjacob.com/2025/03/the-breathtaking-adventures-we-had-in-glencoe.html. Thank you!
Thanks Melody
DeleteHmm, this makes me ponder...
ReplyDeleteAll day yesterday I kept thinking it was Saturday. I guess I was trying to fast forward the weekend , but why? No clue so now I have 2 Saturdays..haha
Sue
I do the same thing on Fridays. Probably because it tends to be a less busy day so it feels like a Saturday
DeleteExtremely interesting points. It sure is flying fast for me. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteWe’re all in the same ✈️
DeleteWhat a wonderful explanation of why I feel time is whizzing by. We don't change time here in Saskatchewan, but the rest of the country does. This means things will change on television, and for phoning re income tax questions.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Probably because you live in an agricultural area? I think that’s how it all started.
DeleteInteresting theories but whatever it certainly flies by. :)
ReplyDeleteYes it does and obviously there is nothing we can do about it than to just enjoy the time we have.
DeleteInteresting post. Time does fly by for me except when I am at work. LOL I hate the time change this time of year because I will have to get up an hour earlier and leave an hour earlier. Maybe if I did not have to work I would not care as much. It is hard though for me. Janice
ReplyDeleteI get that. I know when I’m doing something boring, time takes forever. The whole concept of time is interesting.
