The Last May Friday

This morning, I woke before dawn, enjoying the quiet on the patio with a hot  cup of coffee. The morning air was warmer than a month ago - a gentle breeze rustling the outdoor drapery.

Two Ravens in the Redwood Trees of our neighbor's yard enjoy playing with Laydee. They cackle as Laydee tries to chase them, hovering above like they're laughing at her. We named them Heckle and Jeckle, despite knowing the cartoon H & J were actually magpies.

Did you watch Heckle and Jeckle as a child?

ANYWAY...

We chatted over coffee, planning our day, but often we get sidetracked with yard projects we want to do.  As the sun rose and the air warmed, I decided to get out early. My husband planned to work on the brickwork in the rocky garden in front while it was in the shade -

Yesterday, he finished painting the church steps and later noticed a bird had left blue droppings on the last step, likely from eating nearby wild berries on the property.

So, I got up and out and went to the Deli and bought my...

freshly sliced garlic herb chicken breast for sandwiches and pastrami for our lunches. The woman behind the counter, I see all the time. So, as we talked about the heat, she shared that she and her husband live in a nice van on their property after their home was burned down by the Carr fire in 2018. Many people, with paid-off homes, couldn’t afford homeowners' insurance and chose to take the risk. She says she enjoys her simpler life, mentioning they don’t have air conditioning but do have a nice built-in swimming pool to cool off in, as well as quite a bit of property. The fire didn't destroy the pool.  At around my age (71) or older, she appeared happy and looked forward to swimming after work.

Oh, how I love to swim...

I made my way to Happy Valley to Teen Challenge, a local organization dedicated to helping individuals overcome addiction and rebuild their lives.

I stopped by the little farm stand that I enjoy. I love their country home.

The Farmer's wife is rarely there when I arrive—always busy with baking, sewing, or tending to animals. I sense she’s an introvert like me, appreciating solitude. When we do meet, she’s warm and friendly. This morning, I noticed her stand was stocked with delightful treats, but I couldn’t find the pay container. While the honor system is honored, I was hesitant to buy without it, I didn't want to overlook it and feel awful later. So I didn't make a purchase.

At this moment, there is an abundance of freshly baked bread and aromatic goat's milk soaps.

I've bought these before - very good!

Her displays exude a warm and inviting atmosphere, filled with a charming sense of comfort and homey-ness.

Charming in its simplicity, yet undeniably adorable.

Throughout the winter months, she was crafting these bowl covers. With every stitch, she transforms simple pieces of cloth into charming, protective covers to sell.

Observe the item she has nestled in the corner.

I have one, do you?

UPDATE ON Laydee

I wish I could say that Laydee's hips and tail end are showing signs of improvement, but unfortunately, they are not. This was a difficult month for her - Yet, she remains a trooper, gracefully adapting to her circumstances. Her disability bothers me far more than it seems to affect her. At least the injection provides reassurance that she is not having pain. She's just stiff, and sometimes her back legs give out on her. Remarkably, at 12 years old, she shows no signs of greying; her bright, expressive eyes still sparkle with life, and she exhibits no visible distress.

Trust me, I keep a vigilant watch over her well-being.

When we eventually settle into the cozy living room, Laydee strides over to her toy box with an unmistakable purpose. She doesn't simply grab the toy that happens to be on top; instead, she knows precisely what she wants. With an endearing determination, she digs through the jumble, nudging aside various toys until she unearths the cherished Christmas Hippo, which still emits a cheerful squeak. I can't help but smile at her enthusiasm. It’s fascinating how each day brings a new treasure for her to discover.

Animals never cease to amaze me.

I am embracing every moment with her - I have always adored her magnificent paws. And the way she crosses them, so elegantly "Laydee-like."

SO, what weekend plans do you have? We'll play it by ear. Supposed to be another hot one, so anything we do, we'll get up and out early and chill in the afternoon.

Be Blessed

Debby

  1. Laydee is so beautiful. I know you cherish your special times together. Oh, all those wonderful items for sale at that Teen Challenge cottage! What a shame the donation container wasn't available. I can see several things I would've liked. Was that a Betty Crocker cookbook, or a Better Homes and Garden? I have the old Better Homes and Garden and a newer Betty Crocker. I use them both, but the BH&G is like the one my mother used and that is where I find most of my favorite recipes for cookies and pies and some casseroles, etc., that are what my mother used to make, so I often use those recipes. Those steps look beautiful, in spite of the bird's "offering". And yes, we always watched Heckle and Jeckle. They were always funny. As were all the old cartoons. The ones they do today are terrible. I'm glad I don't have children watching the new "modern" cartoons. I enjoyed your post and I hope you have a lovely and peaceful weekend.

  2. I hear there are a lot of yard sales around here in early June. I'm looking forward to browsing through some of them. That jar of roses is soooo pretty. And I like how she placed it on a vintage plate. That farm stand is so charming, and that zucchini bread looks moist and Yummy. I would definitely bring that home with me. I've never seen those bowl covers. What a great idea. I do hope Laydee feels better and more energized. It's sad when our pets are no longer with it. You take such good care of her. And the picture of her paws is delightful. So cute that she digs through the toys and knows what she wants.

Yes, getting warmer here too, and I turned my ac on once already. Have a pleasant and restful weekend, Debby.

  4. The house and farm stand are so cute! I would love to visit it.
Laydee is so pretty. I'm glad that she seems to be tolerating this ok, but it is hard to watch.

  5. Laydee is so lovely and I am glad that she is not in pain. Enjoy each moment you have with her.
We turned our air conditioning on today, mainly because the smoke from the fires in the north of our province are becoming a very big problem here in the south.

    God bless.

  6. The farm stand is adorable! I see a lot that I would have bought, especially the boot flowerpot and bee bowl covers. But she does not say where to leave the money? And if she does say, then someone could come by and take it! Love the little butterfly garden! I remember Heckle & Jeckle well! I am so glad Laydee is still happy!!!

  7. Beau does the crossed paw thing also. It just melts our hearts when he does it. I am doing what you do, watching Beau with care, to make sure there is no pain, he will be 12 Oct 13. so far the Gabapentin is work for him. He has two favorites, there are two indentical bones and 2 identical gators, but he digs until he gets the right one of each. we can tell because of the chew marks on them and the short length of the bone. the bone is NOISY, so I always hope he chooses the gator
I would love to live in that home and the items for sale look yummy. we might have to do the no insurance next year, getting hard to pay the insurance rates on our limited income. we would not be allowed to live in a van or even a small RV..

    1. We wouldn’t either because we live within city limits in a subdivision. Where she lives it is more rural.

  8. Laydee is such a sweet and lovable girl, Debby, and I know you cherish her beyond words. Loved the quaint farm stand, too. I wonder why someone wasn't "manning" it? Yes, I remember Heckle and Jeckle. :) Have a great weekend!

    1. Her husband told me my first time, they are busy manning the farm - it’s a small local stand and they’re always around just can’t man the station. So they work off an honor system.

  9. The perfect names for those ravens. Glad you finished the steps. That darn bird!! Glad you went to the deli. That's sad about the women's house burning down. Glad she enjoys her pool. That farm stand looks like fun. Keeping Laydee in my prayers. I love that she digs through her toys. No weekend plans for me. My husband is fishing in Canada. He will be home on Monday night. Take care.

  10. Laydee is such a pretty girl...Reminds me of grandsons dog (Remi). So sad that so many people loss their homes in fires and no insurance to cover. How wonderful though that this lady is comfortable being where she is at in life. I am sure there are numerous people in the same situation. That little farm stand is so adorable. How sweet that you have it near by and what a pleasure I am sure it brings to many folks. You all are making a lot of progress around your place...Sam and I have been out in the back yard, planting (mostly me) a few Bee Balm plants.

  11. How I wish I might have tagged along with you to that sweet farm! Everything from that bread to the bowl covers makes my heart smile. That's so interesting about the deli lady who's chosen to live in her van ... I suppose when push comes to shove we all do what we have to do (and Ac-CENT-u-ate the positive).
Laydee's such a love! Prayers for her continued comfort!

The picture of Laydee's paws is a real prize. You should frame it.
Its going to be hot today but still not as hot as where you are.
Great wording of the "offering" on the steps..made me smile.
Well friend, I must get some errands done before it gets too hot and then its onward with the garage sale preps and pricing. Its the Never Ending GobStopper...
