Tuesday 4 - Longer Daylight

Welcome back to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4.

Daylight is getting longer... What do you do with the extra daylight?
Not much. I'm still in bed by 9:30 or 10 pm. Sometimes earlier!  I'm an early morning person.

Is it useful, productive, or not?
No. I much prefer standard time.

If you live where it’s more moderate, do you spend more time outdoors?
I guess.

If you live in the tropical climate does it keep you inside?
N/A I don't live in a tropical climate

Does the extra day light cause more heat and more use of utilities for you?

Yes.

My town has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate with very hot, dry summers. (Low humidity, no heat index, No Rain) Redding, despite being north of the 40th parallel, has extremely high summer temperatures, reaching a record of 119 °F (48 °C) (real temperature) on July 6, 2024.

How do you cool your home?
We have air conditioning, thank God.

How do you cool yourself off in the heat of the day?

I do my shopping, walking, and gardening in the morning and stay inside to stay cool by noon on those triple-digit days. Sometimes I go to the community pool in the late afternoons in the summer. They have a senior water aerobics class. I do wish I had a pool, but my husband doesn't want one at this stage of the game.

Actually, this isn't far from the truth. Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen have year-round snow and are just an hour away.

Do you enjoy a good barbecue outside in the warmer months, or do you cook outside and eat inside?

We grill year-round - I don't like to eat outside. It's a big hassle for just the two of us.

What foods do you enjoy on the barbecue?

Tri-tip,  Carne asada, Chateaubriand, chicken wings, chicken drumsticks, Kabob, marinated half chickens, pork chops, (more meat than ribs), hamburgers...
Marinated vegetables, mushrooms...

Dang, I'm getting hungry!

If you don't barbeque, what foods and drinks do you enjoy in the warmer months?

I tend to crave more salads in the warmer months. I still enjoy ice cream, real lemonade, and ice water, as well as milkshakes. I don't usually eat as much in the hot weather as I do in the cooler months.

That's it, I'm going to eat now...

Bye.

  1. Golly, that's a lot of questions. We have an old farm house, so there is no central air. We have to install AC units and we do not have them installed yet, so the electric bill is at it's all time lowest. We BBQ mostly burgers, brats, and chicken, but we have also grilled steaks. I would like to start doing bone in pork steaks this summer. We do eat a lot more salads in summer. I do spend a lot more time outside when winter fades away. We grow a garden, have an herb garden and a lot of flower beds. I also use a clothesline. As for summer drinks, we tend to do unsweetened iced tea, water, and herbal iced teas.

    1. Most homes in and around San Francisco don’t have AC - until living here, I never had AC. It’s expensive but necessary!

  2. I'm enjoying the longer days, but we don't have the heat yet. It's only 45 degrees here right now. My husband just said he'd love to sit on the porch, but brrr!

    1. The days are only an hour longer so it doesn’t make that much of a difference to me. Instead of a sunset at 8:45 it would be at 7:45pm.
Boy that’s cold. You need one of those patio heaters so you can sit on the porch!

  3. Your list of barbecued foods is making ME hungry too!

  4. The heat really gets to me, so in the summer months, I prefer being indoors. We do grill, or hubby does, all year round. And can we stay on Standard Time? Thank you! Blessings, Debby!

    1. It would be only an hour difference at sunset. It’s doable! I think people think it would be getting dark like in the winter.

  5. The Texas heat can be a real scorcher so we stay in the pool a LOT. I am thankful for air conditioning though. I will say that I prefer the Daylight Saving time. I can't imagine going through Summer with it getting dark so early. Honestly, the standard time is kinda depressing to me. I don't like the evenings being dark. Debby...all of your grilled foods sound so good....I am hungry now....lol..

    1. It would only be an hour earlier not the 5pm time in winter. I would welcome the sunset at 7:45 pm - instead of 8:45pm.

  6. Sorry you don't like the longer daylight but I can understand why since you like to get up early. I do like that living in Southern CA we don't get much humidity. The food on the grill sounds yummy.

    1. I like the daylight but the sunsets would only be an hour difference and would $ave a lot on energy bills.

  8. That first meme's soooo me! Like you, I prefer to get up and out before 10 ... 11 even. This humidity just sucks the sap out of me. Thankfully, the heat doesn't affect Tom so much -- good thing since he loves to grill. We've never tried marinated veggies before ... hmmmm!

    1. The only times I went to Alabama was in mid October and it rained most of the time but was nice. The last time was in mid August and it was not as hot and humid as it usually was. I was visiting at a good time! And as soon as we left it got HOT and dreadfully humid.

    1. I agree with you Ginny. I enjoy the different seasons too. I’d get bored if it was the same weather day in and day out. By August I’m looking forward to cooler temperatures and the fall of the leaves.

  10. As a person who lives further north, I am loving the longer days. We do have 4 distinct seasons which is wonderful.

    God bless.

    1. It may not seem like it to those who live up north, but we have 4 seasons here just milder. Our trees turn in the fall and by winter the temps have dropped. We get some frost in the winter even an occasional snow every few years!

  11. The heat gets to me to in the summer - I don't like it at all. As for the time change - I don't care which one - but just keep it the same!

  12. I enjoy morning sun. I sit in morning sun about 20-30 minutes a day - depending on the temperatures.

  13. No heat here yet. In fact the furnace still has been going on in the morning and night. We love to BBQ and do eat outside when we can. Janice

  14. Wow, I didn't realize it could get so hot in Redding. I passed through there many years ago but didn't stop (on the way to LA). With temps like that you really do need air con. I wonder if your husband would agree to a pop up pool rather than a built in pool. I'n not sure how much work they involve but it would be nice to enjoy a dip now and then.

  15. I like standard time better too. I would love for the time to change to just that.

  16. I always enjoy the longer daylight. I am an early riser too and love that it's light by 6 am. In the thick of it I am always ready for bed while there is still light in the sky though which I don't like! I love warm summer evenings in the dark watching the fireflies! I wish I could be a morning and evening person!

  17. I really do like that the evenings are still light. Turning on the lights at 4 in the afternoon is a real downer for me.
I do like BBQ meals but my hubby could live on BBQ forever.
I'm with you on eating outside..it really is a hassle for just the 2 of us.
I am so thankful for our AC. After living for 41 years in Pacific, with its natural AC, I would have died to live in this hot climate without AC.
I do remember camping as a youngster up in your neck of the woods and how hot it was and sometimes our old car overheating in the mountains. Still good family memories anyway.
