Memories Made
I'm pleased to report they all came back safe and sound.
I had noted that the weather had taken a turn for the chillier, courtesy of a cold front sweeping down from Alaska, which lingered in our region for a couple of days. This time, the weather report proved accurate. The temperature plummeted to a brisk 29 degrees in the rugged Trinity Alps. They even witnessed snow flurries in the morning.

My sons remarked that my husband had no trouble managing his lighter load during the journey. It was clear that all his meticulous preparation paid off. In the weeks leading up to the trip, he had been training with a well-packed backpack filled with bottled water, gradually acclimating himself to the weight. Additionally, he had taken to riding his bike regularly. This preplanning made a significant difference, proving that taking the time to prepare is far more effective than simply jumping into a strenuous overnight hike without prior preparation.
He’s feeling sore, but he accomplished his goal. When I asked if he’d consider doing it again next year, he said that it was still too soon to make a decision. This morning at church, I noticed that most of the men didn’t attend, but my husband was there, standing out among the crowd. I turned to him and whispered, “They’re half your age, and yet you showed up—now that speaks volumes!”
Meanwhile, back at home.
I noticed the temperature had dropped to a comfortable 70 degrees, with strong gusts of wind - an unsettling reminder that where there’s wind, there’s an ever-present risk of fire. My phone buzzed incessantly, issuing 33 urgent notifications about nearby wildfires. These fires were caused by human hands, through recklessness or deliberate action. We know that we have arsonists living among us.
Fires have always been my Achilles' heel; I can face most challenges with a steady heart, but the mere thought of flames sends a chill down my spine. The haunting images I've seen and the harrowing tales shared by friends echo in my mind, amplifying my dread. I can’t shake the fear of being caught, unable to escape in time. I know I am not alone.
I had intended to treat myself to a delicious double meat burger from In-N-Out. However, I hesitated, torn between my concern for Laydee and Susie, who were at home, and I didn't want the unthinkable to happen and not be able to get to them. In the end, my grand dinner comprised nothing more than some leftover potato salad.
By 8 pm, the wind had died down, and I stopped getting alerts on my phone. I was then able to read in bed peacefully till lights out.
I watched the movie The Conclave on Amazon, and I genuinely enjoyed it. It had a captivating plot that kept me engaged throughout, and I believe my husband would have appreciated it just as much. The suspense built steadily, culminating in an unexpected twist at the end that completely took me by surprise.
Navy successfully reeled in a fish.
They all came straggling in around 5:30 yesterday - they looked tired, a little smelly, and plenty dirty but had that glow on them of a time well spent.
In response to the unfolding events, remember that God is with us in every circumstance, and we can rely on His strength and guidance as we navigate these difficult times (Philippians 4:6-7).
Debby

Glad your hubs made it home safely and that the load was light!
ReplyDeleteYeah they did good!
DeletePraise the Lord that they are all safely home, and that your stalwart husband made sure he was in church today, Debby. He deserves some accolades for that! Happy, too, that you are currently out of fire danger. I can't imagine living anywhere when the risks are so high. Take care, my friend, and God bless!
ReplyDeleteFortunately the fires were contained fast but we always hold our breath until they are under control.
DeleteGood for your men, and especially your husband who even made it to church today!
ReplyDeleteGlad your fire danger seems ok right now!
All fires are out.
DeleteI’m pleased that my husband did as well as he did.
I know how happy you are that they are back safe and sound. Your husband is VERY healthy!
ReplyDeleteHe has his health issues but physically he is strong. His doctors encourage him to be active.
DeleteNow everyone and everything is back in the right place and you can breathe again.
ReplyDeleteYes!
DeleteSo glad your hubby prepared beforehand and all made it home safe and well. Although beautiful country, I don't think I could live out by you with that many alerts. It would drive me crazy. I pray no fires come near you. Janice
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice to not live with the fire stress all the time.
DeleteEven though we have God with us, I still shivered and shook and prayed out loud during the hurricanes last year, and fire is to me worse than hurricanes. In water you have a chance, fire is all consuming. The photos are spectacular and so glad they had a good hike and safe home and Yay for preparing for that hike.
ReplyDeleteWe’ll all have calamity’s in life - there’s no getting around it. But at least we can call out to God.
DeleteGood morning, I agree always good to prepare for an adventure like that-you did get cold in your area. Sounds like a good trip and congrats on the fish too. Fires nearby would frighten me too Glad everyone is safe.
ReplyDeleteHappy new week ahead
It even snowed a little at Lake Tahoe
DeleteI would not have enjoyed camping in such chilly temperatures.
ReplyDeleteMe neither.
DeleteA couple of years ago, Foodie went out on a winter pack packing adventure in deep mountain snow, with snowshoes. He was gone a week with no contact. That made me nervous. You have to know what you’re doing, the terrain etc.
Such a memorable trip for them all, Debby, and I'm glad they got home safely. These photos are wonderful. This area is beautiful, and they got to experience it and spend time together. I can't believe there was snow flurries. Oh no, on the wildfires. I feel the same as you, they are scarier than ever. Since you stopped getting notifications, were that put out quickly? Oh, I wish you treated yourself to IN-N-OUT Burger. They are delicious, and I crave them sometimes. ; ) Thanks for the suggestion on The Conclave. Sounds like a good one. Now, your mind can rest, knowing your men are back safe and sound.

**Yes, it's been cooler here the last couple days, and yesterday, it was chilly in the morning, and I had to put on a sweater! I appreciate so much all the knowledge you have of this area. I didn't realize it was coming from the winds of Alaska. Have a blessed week.
I’m a weather nerd. 🤓
DeleteHooRay for your hubby, well done! I have the same anxiety about hurricanes. We're in hurricane season now, so I'm watching the weather reports closely. Love your cooler temps, wish we had them here but alas, it's not to be for months yet. {{sigh}} I also love a big juicy burger, but hey, potato salad is good too. Hope you're enjoying a great day.
ReplyDeleteHello, YAY... I am so happy they had a grand adventure. :-)
ReplyDeleteI do not like that there are arsonists among us ... oh that gets me so angry. I know it is true.
Take care my dear Debby!!
Carla
I'm so glad that your husband and sons trip was such a success. The prep made all the difference I think. Glad you were safe too. That wind was something else and the fires were pretty scary. Things can happen so quickly.
ReplyDeleteSeems like the temps are going to rise down here too. Weather guy says 91F this afternoon.
Praying for a great week ahead.
(((hugs)))
Sue
What wonderful news, Debby! Were your buttons positively 'bustin' (with pride) seeing your hale and healthy hubby standing proud while in church?
ReplyDeleteThanks for this review of the Conclave. Heretofore, I'd little interest, but your takeaway has me looking forward to watching it soon.
Good to read they are home and survived the hike and had a good time, fires also scare me never experienced one, never want to the thought of it is scary enough
ReplyDeleteGlad they all made it back home and enjoyed their trip.
ReplyDeleteScary about the fires.
