Thursday's This and That

Slowly but surely, the Lost Coast photos from my sons are trickling in. Foodie captured this one of the vibrant California poppies, knowing how much I love them.

This weekend, he and his friend are attending a Reggae concert at Rolling Hills Casino. Instead of booking an expensive hotel, he used his scrapping skills. He called the Chamber of Commerce for a safe overnight parking suggestion and was directed to an RV park. After inquiring about accommodations, the manager surprisingly offered them a 5th-wheel motorhome for free, encouraging them to pay it forward.

Who does that nowadays?

He was thrilled and called me to share that he had picked up that skill from me back when I was raising my boys as a single parent. Yeah, I had to do that back then... I was completely taken aback! It's astonishing how our children can absorb so much just by watching us over the years. A powerful reminder of parental influence!

Yesterday, I stumbled upon the most delightful little gnome garden bell that instantly caught my eye. Knowing how much my daughter-in-law, Sara, adores gnomes, I just had to snag it! I rushed over to their house, and I hung the bell on their flagpole. I couldn’t resist snapping a photo and texted it their way.

It was a splendid morning on the front patio.  Laydee revels in the ambiance, her ears perked and eyes bright as she observes the lively comings and goings of the world around her. Each passerby and rustling leaf captures her attention, keeping her fully engaged in the moment.

Note: The rocky garden is just about done. Need to trim the weed barrier -

Today marked the final day of school. The bus stop sits across the street, a daily gathering spot that buzzes with energy. Laydee loves to observe the children as they wait for their morning bus.

Note: The wheelbarrow will get new soil and plants.

Oh, if the morning temperatures lingered at that perfect temperature all year long, I would never go inside.

So the 2nd Cardiologist's office hasn't called, so I plan to visit in person. It's making me angry because I detest office inefficiency.  All I want is the stress test as per the ER visit a month ago. It's maddening...

A Public Service Announcement 📢

Since January, grocery stores in my area have switched to these compostable produce bags  (not grocery bags), which are easier to open but have a downside: you shouldn't store your produce in them.

So I looked them up:

Compostable produce bags are popular at farmers markets, co-ops, and natural grocery food stores. Made in the USA these biodegradable produce bags are made from a compostable bioplastic, entirely derived from plant materials and vegetable oils. This eco-friendly material allows the produce inside to breathe which prolongs storage life, keeping fruits and veggies fresh longer.

Reuse these green bags to line your compost bin as Biobags can go right into the backyard compost heap.  They decompose in a composting environment in 10-45 days, leaving no harmful residues behind. The translucent mint green color is an industry standard to show these are compostable.

I have to say, my produce didn't  "keep fresh."  When I mentioned it to the produce guy, he pointed out that you shouldn’t store produce in those bags.

Silly me.

So, who do I believe?

I will dig out my mesh produce bags that I used to use and bring them with me to the store. I got lazy and stopped using them because I kept forgetting them. I have noticed that other shoppers, if they don't bring their own produce bag, they simply place the produce in the cart, which I won't do. That sounds gross to me.

I recall, "back-in-the-day", the produce departments used to use paper sacks.

However They make excellent doggy poop bags  💩

I just heard that on July 1, California gas taxes will rise by 0.65 a gallon. With 2 gas refineries closing, they're saying we will be paying $9 a gallon by next year.

Oh well - that is what happens when you have a one-party rule in the state.

Okay 'nuff said on that.

In the afternoon, I'm in that back room, sifting through old decorating items that I’ve grown bored with. These aren’t true treasures, like family heirlooms or keepsakes filled with memories, but rather things I collected over the years because I once liked them.

My style has evolved, shifting toward a minimalist interior and updated exterior decorations.

I get bored easily displaying the same items year after year. They no longer feel like "old friends"; instead, they have become dreaded dust collectors.

Why am I still holding onto them?

Yesterday, I bought a cotton/poly flag garland featuring 12 American flags that I can use every year until I tire of it. As for the previous decorations, and the one in this photo, I’m done with them; they’re going into the donate box.

I'm embracing the thrill of change: out with the old and in with the new! I'll no doubt keep these fresh vibes for a decade or two, and just when they start to lose their sparkle, I'll be dead!

Alright, it’s time to head back to the back room and dive into some serious sorting. I'll sift through the clutter, keep what truly matters, and toss out the rest!

Take Care
Debby

  1. The gnome bell is adorable and I would buy it if I saw it. The wild Poppy photo is amazing, so gorgeous!! Doctors rarely call when they say, I always wait a day or so after then call them myself. Meanwhile, all the earlier appointments have been taken and I have to wait longer. Ladyee has a wonderful place to watch the world go round!

  2. Re plastic produce bags-I keep a stash of used/washed ones in the car so I can remember to bring them into the store with me. Back at home, I transfer the produce to mesh bags.

In all my years of doing this I've only had a cashier question me on the reused bags once or twice.

Your yard looks great too and I love the gnome bell. I bet your friend was thrilled
Grrr on the Doctor office. This has been crazy.

    God bless.

  5. Love the wild poppy photo. They are so vibrant. Kudos to Foodie for getting free accommodations. Laydee looks like she was enjoying the day. UGH on the gas prices. Janice

  6. The poppies are beautiful! Your son learned from you to be resourceful! I love the gnome and I bet your DIL did too! Also love the welcome sign!

  7. Oh, but the poppy field is stunning. Silly me never thought about them being anything except crimson. Honestly, I'm aghast at those gasoline prices ... the produce bags, too. What's next?
Great minds -- I've spent most of the morning sifting through drawers of "stuff" and putting in piles; sad to say, the largest of the three is "trash."
Laydee's outlook on life warms my heart!

  8. I don't like those new green produce bags at all; it's hard to open the top of them, ugh. The workers don't care for them either. I wish they would switch back to the old ones. That is great that you are going through things and sorting out and maybe giving some things away that you no longer want or need. I was actually going to do my next post on this topic. So many of us are sorting out right now. I smiled when you said, "out with the old and in with the new." That is my motto around here and the girls always remember me saying that. Although, there are a few old things I'll never part with. Your son took a wonderful photo of the California Poppies. I am still waiting for them. That little gnome is too cute, and how nice you gave it to your daughter-in-law, and even went over and hung it to the flag pole. I have to tell you that your lawn looks really nice. Wish I lived closer, and we could sit out there and have a cop of coffee. My landscaped lawn is already starting to grow back! Your "this and that" posts are delightful, Debby, and really my favorite. ; )

    1. California outlawed plastic bags for produce and it went into effect in January. No one likes them.

  9. Leave it to California to lead the nation in high gas prices (Nuff said). I'd never heard of compostable bags, Debby. Very cool! May your day be blessed.

  10. Nice flowers you shared. Poppy flowers are nice. We might pay more money for gas ⛽️ due to higher tax on it. Good thing I can use rewards for gas from Safeway grocery store shopping. I'm decluttering things that I don't need anymore. Donate later this month. It's getting the high 80° rest of this week. Enjoy your day.

  11. Wow on the free accommodations that was such a Score. The poppies are spectacular as is your yard. Well done. I don't blame Laydee for loving her eye on the world.
Boo on your test not happening yet..That kind of thing sure gets to me too.
I have a bit of Gnome Envy there. How cute.
We are slowly purging. This garage sale will either be the most fantastic thing ever or we will croak trying!
My cough is a bit better and I am taking a day off from working in the garage. I can't be under the weather for family coming and the sale.
    Onward and Upward !

  12. I loved reading this. It’s amazing how those little things we do as parents—just trying to get by—end up sticking with our kids in the best way. What a great story about the RV park, and what a kind gesture from that manager. Honestly, it gave me a bit of hope. Also, your gnome bell story made me smile—such a thoughtful surprise. It’s clear how much love lives in all these moments, from Laydee on the patio to the last day of school across the street. You have a gift for noticing the quiet, beautiful things.

  13. How thoughtful you were to get the Gnome and hang it up as a surprise. Those little things keep us happy. :)

  14. I am a huge fan of sift and toss, I also get tired of the same old same old. I called the neuro doc office and begged for Bob's appt to be sooner than Aug 20, its been 10 weeks since he woke up and could not walk and after test at hospital he needs the test for CIDP, she said she would put him on the cancellation list. OH Well... makes me crazy. that RV rental thing is absolutely amazing. and i do love pay it forward..

  15. Yes our children learn a lot just by watching us, I also like that gnome and yeah those produce bags are a good idea and better for the environment but not for storing produce in

  16. Love the poppies...so colorful and beautiful!! Wow! And I love seeing Laydee in the yard, which is beautiful, by the way! Such lovely green grass and a nice shady yard to lay in. Lucky Laydee! I'm not familiar with the "green" compostible bags. I guess we don't have them here yet, at least not where I shop. Oh, I am sorry you are still waiting for your dr. appointment. We are also waiting here now for a specialist to call my hubby to set up an appt. I've been told it might be a long wait. I'm glad it's not an emergency! I do pray your doctor will come through for you very soon. Gas prices that high? That's crazy, but I do know why in your state it is like that. What a shame!! There's really no excuse for it. But we won't go there. I am really trying to make myself start purging. It's not going to be an easy thing, but I need to do it. Probably not in the summertime, however. It's just too hot here now to even think about doing anything like that. That would be more of a fall/winter project if I can just remember to do it! I hope you are successful in your efforts! Oh, the RV rental for your son is so wonderful! I love to hear nice things like that still happening in our world! Yay!
Have a lovely weekend my friend.

    1. California banned plastic produce bags as of Jan. Of course the people were the last to know. No one likes them.

  17. Not too crazy about those produce bags myself. They do not hold up well when trying to put pokie things like corn on the cob in them.

  18. I still haven't heard from the nephrologist's office that was supposed to call me back in... late March?? or April?? I hate inefficiency, also. I'm not going to run them down, I have other things to do, mostly handling my hubby's affairs. I'll only stop in at their office if I know I'mm be in that vicinity. // I loooooove those bright California poppies! My mama always grew the orange type. I still have descendant seeds from those poppies! // Our gas is way below $3.00 and has been for several months. I paid $2.14 the other day to fill 'er up because I had loads of "fuel points" from the grocery store app. I can hardly believe that gas is so high where you are ... or maybe I can believe it. So sorry. // Hugs and blessings to you, Debby!
