Here we are—another Monday. It’s hard to believe that in my 71+ years, that adds up to roughly 3,700 Mondays I’ve experienced. I could calculate the exact number down to the very date, but then I'd have to contend with those pesky leap years, adding an extra layer of math. Perhaps I’ll save that little project for another time when I’m in the mood.
Last week, I made some changes around my space. I’m not ready to embrace fall decor just yet; after all, why subject myself to the anticipation of cooler days when the heat is still so relentless? Just yesterday, the temperature soared to 110 degrees.
What can I say? It was just plain hot.
My new wreath, I bought a couple of weeks ago -
The front door is in dire need of a fresh coat of paint, to match the garage door. We're patiently waiting for cooler weather, as it will allow us to remove the door to paint. Pop out that window embedded within it, making it easier to paint. Hopefully, in just a couple of years, I’ll get around to purchasing a new front door.
This will replace the side entry door to the garage.
This morning, the world was in a serene stillness.
Laydee went into the clinic for her monthly injection. This past weekend, I noticed her stumbling more often, her balance wavering, a gentle reminder that her next dose was due on Monday! So it’s clear that the treatment is working.
And, I still haven't gotten around to painting my fence. I had hoped to tackle it this week, but the heat has made it unbearable for me to work outside.
I snagged this gem at Hobby Lobby for just $5.00!
Our yards are alive with the vibrant presence of hummingbirds, flitting about from one feeder to another. After doing some research, I discovered that California is home to three species that linger all year long.
Here I thought they just loved us. 💖💖
Our hummingbirds are very territorial, fiercely guarding their feeder against the intrusion of others. This feeder, designed to accommodate multiple visitors, becomes a stage for their lively interactions. As morning breaks, two of our feathered friends flit over, greeting us with their mesmerizing aerial displays. If the food supply dwindles, they chirp insistently at one of us - a clear call for a refill, and then the show begins in earnest.
Every morning, I look for the two familiar hummingbirds that always greet us. In the distance, we hear the crowing of roosters from the ranch up the road, which fills the air. On those mornings when we rise before the sun and go out to the patio, fruit bats are making their way to their sleeping quarters. We must have many bats because we don't have many mosquitoes or flies, so they are doing their job!
Here is the elliptical machine that was Char's that she gave to her dad! It’s just sitting there waiting for action, but the heat has kept it on the sidelines. Soon, it'll be tucked away in the garage, waiting for cooler days. My husband has been busy getting his kayak repaired. He needs a new seat and some strapping. The man has so many "toys." He's hoping to go hiking tomorrow in the early morning. Like I said, he is constantly going.

Friday, we had an unusual occurrence...heard on the scanner:
Shots fired
The suspect who fired the shots was seen leaving in a black unknown model truck, a white male adult, unknown clothing beyond shirt and shorts.
A juvenile reports that his father has been fighting with his family all day.
The Bearcat has been deployed, and all units are switching to a Tactical Channel.
In such a scenario, the listening audience would be rendered unable to hear anything. Similarly, the suspect along or those individuals aiding the suspect would also be affected in their ability to hear.
This incident took place on a street adjacent to our subdivision, which resulted in increased police activity in the area. Although we did not hear any gunshots, we observed police and sheriff helicopters monitoring the vicinity. Residents were advised to avoid the area and remain indoors due to the presence of an armed and dangerous suspect.
My husband visited several neighbors whose garage doors were left open, and they were unaware of the situation happening nearby. Upon sharing the news with them, they were thankful for the information.
My son regularly leaves the garage door open until 10 or 11 PM, even when he is inside the house. I find it curious why he chooses to do this.
I recall a conversation with a police officer friend years ago, who once shared that the most dangerous calls they make are those involving domestic violence. The tension and emotional turmoil in those situations can escalate rapidly, turning familiar spaces into arenas of fear and conflict.
After around 45 minutes, the helicopters left - and since then, there have been no updates or details - nothing on the news. We were never scared; I made dinner as usual - we were simply aware.
This weekend, we watched a really good documentary on Theodore Roosevelt on Amazon Prime. I was always interested in him, especially after my son served 6 years on the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Persian Gulf.

I finally wrapped up reading the book, "Adam." It took me a while to get through it, mainly because of the genre. I hope to share my thoughts in a review tomorrow. Meanwhile, my husband just finished "The Art of War," a classic by the renowned Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu from the 5th century BC. Now he's reading, Adam.
🌽 It's time for me to start making dinner... I'm hoping you all have a nice evening. Debby
I love the exercise bike. Fall started here, leaves turning already and I love it.
ReplyDeleteWow, Fall is not here yet.
DeleteWe might start seeing leaves fall next month, but the trees don't start turning colors until October or November, and we even have some trees with leaves on in December.
Our eldest read The Art of War many years ago. I just don't think it would be a book I could get into at all. Scary about the shots fired. Here we are told to lock our doors, and not to let anyone in.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Apparently, there is a lot to glean from this book - business, politics, law, sports, and even life. It's a classic.
DeleteYeah, I locked the door, and the blinds were already closed. I wasn't too thrilled that my husband went outside to let 2 of our neighbors know, but if anything had happened, it would be hard to live with. So I understood.
Oh, that's scary about what happened in the neighborhood adjacent to yours. I hope all is well with that incident. That was so good of your husband to let the neighbors know. Keep us updated on that. That is the cutest hummingbird hanging you got from Hobby Lobby. And I like your door wreath. Now, it looks like you have a screen on your door. I do as well. How do you hang wreaths up on there? I've always wanted to get a seasonal one for my door. I really do enjoy your "this and that" posts, Debby. I like to see what's happening in your world. You remind me of my next door neighbor. She always knows what's happening out there before I do (about wildfires, power outages, when a pipe bursts that is LOUD). When I call her, she reassures me. ; )

I like to be in the know and what I don’t know, one of my sons, who also like to be in the know will tell me. Lol
DeleteYes it was very unusual 45 minutes. I remember years ago when I visited my son, who was living in Long Beach. Every night they had police helicopters looking for someone. Shining the spotlight down. They called them ghetto copters or ghetto birds. He lived near the campus but so much crime back then in the early 2000’s. I was a wreck and it dampened my short visit with him.
Your new wreath is so pretty! That incident sure sounds alarming; all the "what if's" come out to play. I'd heard the same thing about domestic violence calls; best to shelter in place. And pray.
ReplyDeleteHugs to Laydee!
Thanks I like it for all the colors too.
DeleteIt's been very hot here too - but I'm sure it's hotter for you! I'm not ready for Fall either - because after that comes Winter!
ReplyDeleteThat was a scary situation near you - glad everything seems ok now.
I'm thankful that the treatments are working for Laydee.
I’m ready for fall weather just not Fall decorating! It does feel like fall.
DeleteIt could have been scary. I was calm just wanted it to be over with. I felt safe.
Such a pretty colorful wreath.
ReplyDeleteScary about the shots being fired.
Domestic violence is getting out of hand.
DeleteI love the first photo with the aqua mail flower box. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI keep our garage door shut. That is scary it was so close to you.
Hope your hubs jumps on the bike soon.
Thanks I liked it too!
DeleteYour wreath is beautiful, and so cheerful! And I love the bird spinner, it is so pretty. Your place sounds like a Hummingbird paradise! It must be amazing to sit outside with all the beautiful nature. When it's not so hot!
ReplyDeleteThat's why we're out there at the crack of dawn!
DeleteWe get hummingbirds too and they are fun to watch. They can be loud too. I like to watch the doves come to the birdbath. I am going to put sunflowers on my seasonal tree because it is too hot to bring out fall. I usually wait until after Labor Day to decorate. Stay cool!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love the doves too. I usually start Fall decorating after Labor day to a point. I trickle it in...
DeleteAutumn is early here this year. Wishing you well and your family. Praying for you all.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Thanks, Victor. Enjoy your early Autumn.
DeleteIt is very worrying when violence comes so close to home. We hear gunfire occasionally, but it's from the military academy where officer cadets are in training and out on exercise.
ReplyDeleteOne can live in safe communities, but the one thing you can never figure on is domestic violence
DeleteI love your wreath so pretty. I am in my mid 70's now this too hot summer has kept me indoors too-so I watch the grass get taller-sigh-can't be out there and it is also very humid too. I would never want my garage door open for all to see what is inside-and tempting some. we live on lake in the ozarks in Missouri but in the more rural area-so pretty safe here-so far anyways.
ReplyDeletestay cool if you can we finally got a bit of rain last night
This is the first year I didn't get a tan. I like to sit in the sun and just decided it's too doggone HOT. The air is dry anyway, and a tan dries my skin even more. Considering this was a domestic situation, that can happen anywhere. Sad.
DeleteThings have changed, and not for the better. Back in the 1980's most people in our neighborhood left their garage door open. That's how you could tell they were home.
ReplyDeleteI've never done that, and even my folks never just left it open. Only if Dad was out there tinkering.
DeleteWe always leave our garage doors closed, Debby, as it is a matter of safety, for sure. Sorry that your neighborhood had that scare, but so glad you are both okay. Your wreath is so colorful and it makes me happy to think of those hummingbirds visiting you on a daily basis. What a treat that is! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteYes, it is a matter of safety, and it irritates me that my son won't listen to me about leaving it open.
Deletethis is the kind of excitement that one really does not expect...of course, these days, there are issues all around. Just yesterday in Austin, Tx and man shot 2 adults and 1 child and they died. They said he was mentally ill.... Your wreath is perfect for summer! l like the colors. We are having our house repainted outside beginning tomorrow..Oh my, it really needs it! Our hummers have left for the season..I guess it is too hot for the little things. Enjoy today!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I bet that will look so nice for you, to have your house painted.
DeleteThat is so sad about the shootings. Just awful
Well, that was certainly enough excitement for one day! We got up to 104F yesterday. That's hot enough for me...
ReplyDeleteI love to watch our resident hummers in our manzanita tree. They sure are territorial.
We keep our garage doors closed too. We really are in a safe neighborhood but I don't want to give anyone a chance to "help themselves"
Sue
I have a good friend who is now a retire police officer and domestic related calls were the worst he also said. I have a confession...I finally just took down my patriotic decor and am slowly adding in Autumn when I have the time. Glad the monthly injections are helping Laydee. I never understood why folks would leave their garage doors open. My neighbor did a few weeks ago and when he finally closed it a fox had been in there. Imagine going back out to your garage and finding a fox looking at you. He was scared. Janice
ReplyDeleteMy mom maintained about 3 hummingbird feeders outside her kitchen window in the back yard before her dementia got to where she no longer paid attention to them. She would most days fill them twice a day she had so many birds around. We would sit on the deck next to the feeders sometimes and they would come flying through so quickly that we would actually duck expecting them to run smack into our forheads! There were a few that would come to the window and flutter there for a bit as to say hello sometimes.
ReplyDeleteJust recently my brother put up one in front of one of the living room windows that we all maintain so she can enjoy them again.
