Swimming and Good News

Yesterday, I finally signed up for the YMCA in my town, primarily for swimming. I planned to start today, but I couldn't find my swimsuit—then I recalled that I had donated it because I never really liked it. So, I ordered a new swimsuit on sale from Amazon, and hopefully, it will arrive by Saturday. After that, I couldn't locate my swim shoes, so I quickly went to Walmart and found the last pair in size 6. They're ugly, but those shoes are a lifesaver for my delicate feet when navigating the rough surfaces of the pool bottoms.

I plan to gradually return to swimming, starting with water aerobics and then moving on to lap swimming once the soreness from the aerobics subsides. In my younger days, I enjoyed running. Unfortunately, my aging hips and knees can't withstand the impact, and I want to avoid any more joint replacement surgeries… Swimming suits me perfectly as it's low impact and an overall cardiac workout for my whole body. And I just love being in the water.

There are numerous other fitness classes and equipment available, but I prefer to stick with swimming. They have one indoor pool, a large outdoor pool, and a saltwater pool. The warm pools will be enjoyable during the rainy season for my bones and joints. Ahhhh, I can sense the comfort already.

I won’t be the only elderly woman present - I was given a tour and noticed many little old ladies just like me everywhere! How wonderful! It’s an incredibly hectic environment that makes me feel somewhat anxious, but I will persevere as all us introverts have to do. It feels like starting school mid-year and being the new girl.

So until I get my bathing suit, I will take a Zumba class tomorrow. I won't be going on the weekends.

DO you like to swim?

I was in Daiso and spotted this dainty little cup - It was so sweet. I wanted it, but passed because I don't NEED it. Plus, it doesn't match anything. So I saved 100%.

Navy and Sara are in San Diego for the week. We will go to their house to feed Ed and Harry until the 27th.

✅The husband has been fixing his kayak, which needed some TLC, replacing the ties, and cleaning out the compartments.

✅Today is his first day back at the college, where he sets up a table, sharing materials and books from Friends of Israel.

✅BSF has started adding new ladies for the year in my group.  I currently have 13 ladies, with three returning. I look forward to meeting and nurturing ten new ladies I haven't met before. I could have up to twenty, so we will see what happens.

✅My son, Foodie, has a new work schedule. He now has Thursdays and Fridays off because they need him to work on the weekends.

✅ Laydee is thriving! Who cares if she has a little wiggle in her walk? It just adds to her charm and personality!

✅ and Susie?  Just being Susie, waking me up in the middle of the night, to just look at me. I feel the stare, and there she is. Then she licks my nose.

No 3 am is too early to get up!

I just returned from the cardiologist, and as I expected, I'm all clear. There’s no cardiovascular disease, and all those tests they put me through came back normal. Crazy, my blood pressure is back to normal again - 110/80.

I will see them once every six months.

They want to understand the cause of my fainting spells (syncope) that I have experienced for many years. Therefore, I will be getting a handy dandy Loop Recorder Device installed. Unlike a pacemaker, this device is not meant for prevention; it is a small gadget that constantly monitors the heartbeat. It is placed under the skin of the chest and remains for three years. This procedure is not considered surgery; it is a straightforward process that takes about 10 minutes to implant, and with additional time needed for preparation and recovery, the total time is no more than an hour.

I'm not thrilled about it, but it's all part of this new journey of aging. I'm thankful for the advancements in technology that can improve my quality of life and address these fainting issues. This year, I haven’t had any spells; I usually have one or two each year, so I feel hopeful. So it's all good.

In my view, it revolves around me embracing my aging journey and acknowledging my deep gratitude for the many blessings in my life and how God continues to intervene, using technology as I age. I can see His Hand through it all.

Till Next time,

Debby

  1. Good for you joining the Y, Debby! I loved pools when I was younger, but now prefer the treadmill or stationary bike. I hear you about protecting you knees though. Great news about your cardio tests, too! My husband will have to have a second ablation soon (no date yet) to correct the one spot they couldn't get on his heart when they did the first one. That's why he was on the Amiodarone that practically killed him. The new technology is a God send. Blessings!

  3. My husband had a loop put in when he had his stroke. It was an outpatient procedure. However after 2 years, they wanted to start charging him $50 a month. Since they never found anything on it in those years, he had it removed. Good news on your test. Have fun swimming. Once I retire I think hubby and I will spend more time swimming in our river. 4. Hmm, that is really interesting information about the implant. I am so glad that you got a good report from the cardiologist.
I love swimming and perhaps that is something I should look into doing once again. Must check and see what our pool offers.

    God bless.

  5. I think swimming is a great way to get some exercise. Good for you! I'm glad to hear your cardiology results and it will be interesting to see what the loop shows.

  6. Good news on your test results. I started going to the pool (In-Shape) in the mornings to water walk after I retired. I don't lap swim anymore because of my knees. There is a big group of regulars there that I have made new friends with so it is as much social as exercise now. I have been missing it this summer since I had my shoulder surgery but have had a weekly lunch with some of them at our local senior center so I have kept in touch. One of the ladies that lives near me volunteered to pick me up on the way. Just a couple more weeks and I will be mobile again and can get back to it.

  7. Oh, how wonderful that you have a YMCA nearby and can do the swimming aerobics, etc. I would LOVE to do that, but we don't have any place nearby. I know swimming is so good for the heart and arthritis, and I could use help in both areas. Please enjoy going and take a few laps for me! LOL. I know you will be happy to get back to your BSF classes and ladies. What a wonderful blessing to be able to do that. Our ladies' Bible study at our church will start back up after Labor Day. I hope to be able to participate. I enjoyed your post and all the news about your family and things that are going on. It all sounds good. Fall is coming and we can get back into routines again. That is always good. Oh, that loop thing sounds interesting. Modern technology is certainly amazing!! Take care my friend.

  13. Great about the cardiologist news! That will be nice for you to go to the swimming pool and get some exercise. It can be relaxing as well. Yes, I can swim, although it's been years since I frolicked in the pool, but I received all my certificates growing up. I love that tea cup with the red flower. It looks like the perfect size and shape to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. How fun for Navy to be in San Diego. One of my favorite So Cal towns. "The aging journey".....I like that Debby. I'm right there with you. ; )

  14. I'm not a swimmer but I wish there was a "Y" close to us. It sounds like yours is huge with 3 pools. I know that is going to be great for you.
I don't think I even have a swimming suit any more...Its been too, too long.
So happy to read about your successful cardio report. Interesting on the implant suggested. I do hope that all works out for you.
A mostly New group for BSF. New challenges, new insight, new friends and new discoveries.
Enjoy your day. It's going to be 104F again today ... Sigh ...

    1. The building next to it went vacant, and it was donated to the Y. So they secured funding to add another pool, a teen center, and a dry sauna. It's all fairly new. They said they have so much room now, but have to wait for more private funding - it's quite a nice Y.

  17. Shortly after moving here I joined a senior aerobics water class at the "Y" ... but quit before the year was out. How I could identify with feeling like the "new girl" in middle school, but what broke the proverbial camel's back was the pig sty they called a locker room. Once our weather cools some, I'm going back to walking the park's trails.
I'm delighted to hear Laydee's thriving! That, and the A+ report from your cardiologist. Woo-hoo!
