The last couple of days...

Can you see it? ☝☝☝

The air is beginning to take on that autumn vibe. Well,  kinda-sorta! The last few days have started to cool, and the leaves are hinting at their vibrant transformation that is to come.  I can feel the fall season creeping in, and soon, I'll be able to see it!

We experienced a few days of gentle rain, where every dribble and drop, every bit of drizzle and glistening dew, contributed to the rainfall amounts. Each tiny speck of moisture played its part!

Since Sunday, the husband has been battling a persistent and painful toothache, a discomfort that has now become unbearable. Frustrated, he reached out to his dentist for an emergency appointment, but the earliest available slot is not until the 22nd. He then decided to visit the VA urgent care clinic. There, the doctor examined him and suggested that the pain could be indicative of an underlying infection. He was prescribed a course of antibiotics and advised to keep his dental appointment the following week, hoping for a swift resolution to his dental woes.

Sunday afternoon was the day that Flight Nurse, Suzie came home. We walked to the overpass near us to watch as the procession to the funeral home went by.

An overwhelming presence of emergency vehicles flooded the area, a testament to the respect they all had for Suzie. They came from the UC Davis Medical Center, by the Reach Air Medical Helicopter; the company Suzie served with -  their journey to the Red Bluff Airport. From there, they made their way 29 miles, finally arriving at the solemn destination of the funeral home.

I never get a chance to stand at the overpass to look out. Pretty nice view...

The crowd came together, forming a long line as they waited the arrival of the procession. A profound silence enveloped the scene, and not a single eye remained dry- people filled their cars and lined the roadside, united in a moment of shared emotion.

The second vehicle carried Susie, closely followed by her husband, RJ, in the black vehicle, who waved to everyone on the overpass. As family and friends followed, a procession of emergency vehicles, including police, fire, ambulances, and sheriff's vehicles, accompanied by Cal Fire, passed by next.  I saw two medical helicopters soar overhead.

Every overpass for 29 miles was adorned with flags and filled with people expressing their love and gratitude for Suzie and her family.

As I mentioned earlier, the primary employer and leading industry in this area is the medical profession. This tragic event has connected us all, as everyone knows someone who was touched by her, even if we didn't know her personally.

It’s not often that someone leaves me in awe, but her unique qualities and experiences resonate with me. Her courage for Christ and her willingness to put others first are qualities we should all aspire to emulate.

In this world, increasingly consumed by the relentless mantra of "self" and "me me me",

We all lost a really good one.

  1. I'm sorry your husband's tooth has been hurting. I'm glad he was seen at the urgent care, and I don't think it's right that he has to wait til the 22nd if it may possibly be infected. The view is nice looking out from the overpass. I didn't realize that the leading industry in your area was the medical profession. Seems like there are a ton of good restaurants there as well. I'm glad it's starting to feel like Autumn.....kind of, sort of. ; ) We have had a little drizzle here and there too. And it's already cold, 35 when I got in my car this morning.

    1. Many dentists in the area are not seeing new patients. It’s really hard to find a good dentist. He’s good and gentle but just extremely busy.

  2. In Canada we have an area of the Trans Canada highway in Ontario that is called "The Highway of Hero's" and all of what you show in your pictures takes place each time one of our hero's return home from overseas to their final resting places.
    Susie was a hero.

    God bless.

Glad your husband got antibiotics. He will have to get the tooth under control before they can do much anyway.

  5. What a sad, sad day. The loss of someone whose life was dedicated to helping and saving others could not be saved herself. I would be so mad at the dentist's office! Our dentist...if I say I am in pain, he fits me in right away. Once, he even opened his office for me on a weekend. He couldn't find any of the right tools because he had no assistants there!

    1. Wow that sounds like my Doctor. Nope this dentist I really like but he’s very busy because some dentists are not accepting certain insurances and other insurances have left the state.

    1. It’s all about community - we always try to show up for these shows of support. Once we looked for a missing baby with the community- never found the baby. The father was an addict and took the 6 month old baby and then had a shoot out with the police in Dunsmuir. It didn’t end well for the father. Meanwhile it’s been 10 years and the mom still believes the baby is still living. It was a heartbreaking situation for our area.

I'm glad your hubby sought care sooner rather than wait. Good idea to begin the antibiotics, and I hope the tooth is much better this morning.

  16. I am so sorry to hear that your husband has been in such persistent and unbearable pain with that toothache. Waiting until the 22nd for a dentist appointment when the pain is that bad is truly rough.

It was very smart of him to go to the VA urgent care clinic. Getting on a course of antibiotics is definitely the right move if an infection is suspected. While the antibiotics won't fix the underlying problem, they can start to knock down the infection and hopefully bring some relief so he can make it comfortably to the dental appointment next week.

In the meantime, a simple saltwater rinse can often help soothe the area temporarily. I hope the medication starts working quickly so he can get some peace before the 22nd. Thinking of you both.
