My Neck of the Woods

This week’s Monday post will be brief, featuring a few photos from the past week or so…

Clear Creek Gorge

When we first moved up here from the Bay Area, we tried panning for gold and rockhounding down there, but it was HOT. I enjoy this place in the Autumn. The most comfortable time to search for rocks is when it's much cooler.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we had to drive up to Mt. Shasta City, and wow, the mountain was breathtaking like always.  During the storm, we received beautiful rain, and the snow capped everything above 5,000 feet.

Northern Lights Tuesday evening.
I slept through it once again. 💤💤💤

In just one day, we went from only a few leaves to an avalanche!

My husband ventured out to rake leaves and ended up tweaking his back. I encourage him to take a break and let his back rest, but it seems he gets a bit offended by my suggestion. He's stubborn about what he can and cannot do, and I do believe he is in denial. Granted, he can do a lot - but I knew the leaves would hurt him because once he starts, he doesn't want to quit and he goes at it like a madman!

Men!

It doesn't hurt my pride. I tackle my housework in bursts! I take 15-minute breaks. It’s been challenging for him since Friday, but he’ll be fine. His body is yelling at him, that’s all.

Doctors need to tell husbands to listen to their wives.

Just saying...

I spotted a beautiful dove outside my window. They always bring a lovely sense of peace and renewal to the moment.

Thank You, Lord.

See the two little cuties on the fence?

Liberty and Guardian have been busy rebuilding their nest. The night of the storm, they hunkered down in those 55 mph wind gusts.

Now she has a mess to clean up!

I feel for you, Girlfriend.

Rockslide - a common occurrence on this particular highway to/from the coast in the winter. I’ve never heard any news of any accidents resulting from these rockslides! While efforts to install netting will be attempted, nature can be unpredictable in these rugged areas.

I’m excited about the fantastic week ahead! The holiday buzz is in the air, but I’m choosing to enjoy my own pace, and it feels good to embrace this sense of freedom so I can savor every moment. I hope you are as well.

Here’s to a joyful week!

  1. I always take my time doing chores now. We still have leaves on our trees. I think the snow that came last week froze them and now they will be there all Winter. Who knows. Beautiful pics of your area. I once again missed seeing the Northern Lights by a half hour. I had to go to work the next day and missed them. UGH Some day I hope to see them. Janice

  4. Wow those Northern Lights are beautiful! They were supposedly visible in my neck of the woods a few days ago but it was cloudy so I didn't see anything! Hope hubbys back is better.

  5. Your husband sounds a lot like mine, Debby. When I think he's overdoing things, I'll be the first to say something. Sometimes he listens and sometimes he doesn't - LOL! Your photos are beautiful, too. Blessings!

His back is seeing some relief if he continues to take it easy.

  7. When I came home from the gym today the lawn service was blowing/bagging up the accumulated leaves. They'll do a second pass in a couple of weeks.

  8. Amen on the husbands not knowing when to quit. Dave's issues have forced him to slow down and that's just fine with me. He's much more important than the avalanche of leaves.
Gorgeous photos of your area. Everything is just gray and drippy here today.
Dave is feeling a skosh better. I think the meds are finally kicking in.

  9. I tried to draw a big red circle around "Men" and the doctors telling hubbies to listen to wives. mine is just like yours, he will not do a job in spurts. its getter done all the way full tilt until he collapses. even from his hospital bed in the living room he is threatening to do get the goop out of the pool that I can't do...

  10. Hi, I liked your last sentence, the holiday buzz is in the air, but I will go at my own pace. We got our advent reading in the mail, I am getting excited to start our reading with my husband. We started this tradition of reading the advent together 8 years ago, it means so much.
I enjoyed all the photos today.

    1. Carla, Advent is a tradition I never embraced but am seeing more and more people observing it. We experience it through our church in December But at home we do not. I’m not opposed to it - just all the churches I used to attend never observed it. I’ll have to look into it.

  11. First of all, I love the title of your post, and always appreciate seeing what's happening around your neck of the woods. I had the same thing happen with the leaves. Just had a landscaper here recently, then we had rain and wind, and my lawn is covered in leaves! You know, there is a girl in the neighborhood who does light landscaping like raking leaves, etc. Just wanted to mention that for your husband. There's always young kids who will do that, so your husband doesn't hurt his back.
aahh, you got some Doves in your yard too. Those northern lights are beautiful. I loved seeing that clock in downtown Mount Shasta. I've been wanting to have a little visit there. Such a charming town. Mount Shasta is so majestic every time I see it. Those rockslides do concern me. And your neighbor's tree has a lot of Autumn color still. Thank you for this lovely post this Monday afternoon, Debby.

    1. I’ve seen signs out offering that service. It is something to consider. Like I said, I have never since living here, heard of any rockslides involving vehicles or injuring people.
      Thanks for dropping by, Sheri.

  12. How wonderful to be surrounded by that scenery! Tom's days of physical labor are over and I'm merely content to let the leaves settle and eventually decay where they lay. Good idea to take physicality in short spurts, but I can certainly testify to the powers of Voltaren.

    1. My husband is following "my orders" to take it easy, doing his back strengthing exercises this week and he's improving. It's driving him crazy as he looks outside and sees all the work with the leaves has been for naught.

  18. I did enjoy seeing your photographs, the scenery is lovely.
As I've got older I tend to take my time doing chores and always reward myself with a nice cup of tea when they're done!
I hope your husbands back feels, and gets, better soon.

    All the best Jan

  19. Like you I work in 15 or so minute stretches and that seems to enable me to get things done and not hurt my back. So right doctors definitely should tell our husbands to listen to us.
Beautiful photos of the scenery around you.

    God bless.

  20. Sounds like your husband is a stubborn one! While I miss leaves, I do not miss the raking!

  21. I am always amazed at how much I can get done on my chores in short bursts. Sometimes I am more productive that way.
I love the photo of Mt. Shasta! Every time we would drive between SoCal and Portland, I would take so many photos of Shasta. I do miss the Cascades.
And the drives to the coast on those wild roads!
