New Years Eve

In the afternoon, we drove over to Whiskeytown Lake and settled in to soak up the peace and quiet of a year barely hanging on. There we sat, on a bench with Laydee by our side - just enjoying the quiet and looking west toward the dusting of snow on Shasta Bally.

Shasta Bally, the tallest peak in the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area at 6,174 feet, is just minutes from my home. It's especially stunning in winter with a dusting of snow. Our area's TV/Radio transmitters are located here, so during heavy storms or snow, signal outages occur, requiring technicians to hike to the top to fix the equipment since the gravel road ends at 4,000 feet.

Silence has always spoken to me. I know that's an oxymoron, but even in silence, there are lessons to learn, and it's where, I believe, God speaks to me through His creation.

As in the way the geese glide on the lake's surface, the haunting call of a loon in the distance. Then there is the turkey vulture, a fascinating bird that is the master of soaring, using warm-air thermals to glide long distances with hardly any effort. It's incredible to me how such a visually unattractive bird can glide just as elegantly as a bald eagle. I watched one for about 20 minutes there at the lake, swooshing down, eyeing his prey, then coming up again and gliding to another place. While watching, I thought what fun it must be to fly through the sky like a vulture??

Have you ever taken the time to watch a vulture soar?

Okay God, what are you saying...

Just as God designed the vulture for its role in nature, He has equipped each of us with our own role to fulfill. As we age, it can feel as if we have lost our importance, leading us to believe we have no more value. However, God knows our true worth. Like the vulture, our value isn’t based on our outward appearance - but on how God sees us through His eyes to be. We still matter. Until we go home to Him, each of us will still have a purpose.

I recently shared my thoughts on how pigeons are often misunderstood, and you know what? Vultures are, too! Before I moved here, I only saw these amazing birds in the wild. Now, I see them all the time. They're such a joy to watch, especially on those windy days when they seem to soar effortlessly.

After our last visit to the lake for 2025, we came back home, and I whipped up another pot of chili! The batch from last week was such a hit that we just couldn't get enough of it. A cozy evening, just the two of us plus Laydee and Susie. Earlier in the day, Laydee was given her trazodone for anxiety because of the inevitable sounds of celebration, which always include firecrackers.

And then it started - The bane of my existence - illegal fireworks.

What part of "illegal" don't people understand?

It started with occasional pops and cracks - and some loud BOOMS came thundering down around 7 and continued on and off till the final act- the grand finale at midnight, which lasted nearly 30 minutes. The worst we've had in 17 years! My poor dog was terrified, and my cat was all over the place, full of energy, jumping from window to window. I felt sad watching my dog struggle under the weight of the stress. The challenge is determining the origin of the firecrackers. A neighbor claimed they saw a truck throwing firecrackers out of the window as it passed by, so the police can't trace them.

I feel great compassion for animals - there are chickens, goats, and a horse hospital nearby. Many birds visit our yard, and I know dogs and cats that get lost. Plus, we must consider Veterans with PTSD.

But we survived it. Like we do every year and with our nation's 250th birthday celebration on July 4, I have a feeling it's going to be cRaZy.

Until next time,

Debby

And as if no one has said it to you yet,

HAPPY NEW YEAR

  1. Jim and I used to spend a weekend in the summer staying in Redding. Saturday we ventured out to differnet areas and the evenings we usually drove up to Shasta Dam after dinner to see the deer come down the hill to graze. Sunday was swimning at Whiskey Town lake for the day. and usually dinner at Peter Chu's before heading back home.

    1. Sounds like good times. We also like to go over to the Dam, to feed the deer carrots. It's so peaceful during the middle of the week. It's been awhile since we've gone to Peter Chu's. Maybe in February for Chinese new year.

  3. The fireworks here back when we had Wiggy, stressed her out so. I feel for the animals with all the booms. Lovely post. We are not useless no matter the age. And right now, talking of age, I'm watching this channel called Pasta Grannies. These women are amazing. And they are how my Mamam was (Hungarian gram). Just making dough, doing their thing, being amazing. Age and the wisdom is to me, a wonderful group of women (and men), to learn from.

I love the silence too. I make cavatelli quickly in my kitchen. A little meditation goes a long way.

Happy 2026! I look forward to reading more of yours (and everyone's we follow), posts. Cheers, Ivy.

I remember my grandma working hard in her garden, cutting tree branches, hauling etc, well into her 80's and we also knew a retired physician who was in his,90's who once a year would go out snow skiing. He lived to be 100. My daughter-in-law's 95 yr old grandmother, did some zip lining when she turned 90. The thing is, she can barely walk. There's a lot of life out there - lets enjoy it and experience it. ❤

May you find success in your endeavours, both big and small.

May good fortune shine upon you, bringing prosperity and peace.

May the spirit of mateship strengthen your bonds and bring you closer to those around you.

May you always have time for a yarn with friends, a good cuppa, and the simple joys that make life so special

  5. Such beautiful places to enjoy "the sounds of silence" around you! I love doing that too, and haven't been able to do it often enough lately. I think I need to make that a "resolution" for 2026 to go into the woods and wilds more often and enjoy the silence!! It gets too noisy here in the "real world". Yes, the turkey buzzards/vultures are amazing creatures. They keep our roads clean from road kill and they have a an interesting hierarchy that is very efficient in performing their duties. Their beauty is in their commitment to their purpose in life! Oh, I am sorry about the noises hurting the animals. I noticed our Blackie was also having difficulty with the firecrackers going off in the evening. Thankfully they didn't have that many this time, which I was surprised, but yes, this year's 4th of July may be a whole different story. We may all have to head to the places of silence for a while!!
And yes, Happy New Year back to you!! It's going to be a wonderful year!!

    1. I rarely saw vultures when I lived in the concrete jungle of the bay area. They're all over, here, so I've learned to appreciate them and their efficiency. It would stink if we didn't have them around. God knew what He was doing.

  6. for the first time in years, since fireworks became legal under our idiot governor, we had silence. I was so thankful. they don't just do them all at once time, its a whole week of it. but this year it was illegal because we are under fire warning red alert and it was all over TV and FB and social media, NO fire, no fireworks, no anything that has sparks not even hand held sparklers. they even canceled the city firework I think because they did not go off at midnight and wake me up. so sorry for you sweet pets suffering.
I love outdoor silence, in the forest, at the beach, and the natural sounds in the back ground. Love the call of the loon, we don't have them here. but we have owls and doves.
I am a lover of Vultures, always have been. I call them God's Garbage Guys, and until the last 2 years they were a common sight ever day. we have a lot of roadkill because we are so crowded with traffic and as soon as a possum or coon were down they would come and circle and by the next day there was no sign of the road kill.
I have watched them in our tree and they are quiet amazing to watch.

    1. They're illegal here and have been for decades but I think it's really hard to enforce. Plus the native American, rancheros sells them and its legal there so people go in native land to purchase.

  9. The beauty of those buzzards soaring is something I never might have imagined. Wow. That said, I'm one of those people who see little beauty in fireworks -- only the resulting terror, both to animals and veterans of war. I don't suppose there's anything we can do about it, except to keep those affected as comfortable as possible.
    Happy New Year!

  10. The Sound of Silence ... that makes me thing of the Redwoods up the CA coast. I always felt like I was walking in a cathedral when going there. I must somehow return to the woods !!
Wishing you a blessed new year and thank you for your encouragement about being designed for a reason, no matter the age.
We have so many vultures always circling in our area. I love watching them and one time a vulture landed in our backyard and cleaned up a departed squirrel. It was fascinating to see. That was the first and only time since we moved to this house.
There definitely is God's perfect plan for all of us creatures.

    1. Oh yeah, we're not done till God says we are.
Oh the vultures - I remember after the 2028 Carr Fire and all the vultures after the fire was out. We went up to the Veterans cemetery and they were all over. Imagine how those who were up there to bury their Veteran to see vultures all over the place. Their hunting grounds were burned -

  11. Give me the peace and quiet any day, Debby. I so enjoyed the videos you shared, too. The cry of the loon is so haunting and mysterious, and the soaring of the turkey vulture is so graceful. Yes, I'm back to blogging now that our family has departed so I'll be posting on Tuesday, God willing. Happy New Year, my friend!
